I rarely write reviews, but the terrific experiences I had at the Best of British Pub over the Thanksgiving period demanded it.
The pub has an unassuming front in a small strip mall (although the community library in the English phone box, was a nice touch), but opening the door was like entering Santa's grotto for Ex-Pats, Anglophiles and Brit curious folk from all backgrounds.
The walls are covered in football (soccer) paraphernalia, the shelves drip with familiar goodies and treats from home, like Bisto, Cadbury's, Bird's custard, advent calendars, selection boxes, Christmas puddings etc. testing my restraint on the impulse to buy it all!
Then there is the warmest of welcomes from the staff who instantly take you back to your 'Local' from home.
While Father Christmas (Santa) is probably still the jolliest guy around, Marty, Ann and Jimmy are very close behind!! They are genuinely concerned and will do anything to ensure you have a great experience. Nothing was too much trouble! I had booked early for Thanksgiving lunch expecting an English roast dinner. When they made the decision to do a traditional American Thanksgiving dinner, Martin called to let me know, but insisted that since we had already booked for the English version, he would accommodate anyone who would prefer that. True to his word and to the extreme credit of his kitchen staff, seven of us had our own special lunch that day and it was wonderfully fresh and delicious! Then when the Pecan pies weren't quite ready when we were ready for desert - instantly we were offered sticky toffee pudding as an unpublished alternative - Seven wonderful puddings were scoffed down!
A special shout out to Jan our server, who had been roped in to help out on the day and was fantastic - you would never have known she wasn't a regular and I am sure she would still be entertaining my 88 year old Mother-In-Law with chatter from England today if my Mother-In-law had her way - She had the best time being lauded over and made to feel really special by Jan, Martin, Ann and Jimmy. She said it was the best Thanksgiving she could remember!
The local friends we dragged along for an 'English Thanksgiving Experience' also loved it - especially not having to cook and their first experience of a traditional British Roast Dinner. It will not be their last!
I don't need to say that the food was great - The turkey juicy the vegetables fresh and delicious and the Yorkshire puddings had me dreaming of home.
We also went back for the full English breakfast, and it didn't disappoint. The sausages were plump and wonderfully tasty, the bacon (which they cure themselves) fantastic the black pudding excellent etc. all washed down by a big pot of tea!!
It was by far the best 'Full English' I have had in the States, and I have more than 30 years in the US.
All I can say is a huge 'Thank You' to all at The 'Best of British' - I have a new favorite US based British pub and I would tell everyone to give it a try if you are in the Orlando area and don't think twice about driving an hour or so for one of their Sunday Lunches or that 'Belly...
Read moreI have given this pub a few tries since it moved into what was once an Irish pub. So disappointed. Last Saturday night (88.23) was the worst. I walked in around 6:30, sat down, no one came to take our order until 7(after checking at the bar a few times too) I get it busy Saturday. The problem was this several tables and one right next to us had 6 people were able to sit order, eat, and one table was able to leave before our one single order of fish and chips that we were going to split was delivered to us. I do not blame the waitress whatsoever at this. Finally after an hour, I asked someone who walking in and out of the kitchen where our order was, he came back out with it apologized, said it had been delivered to the wrong table and then put back in the wrong place in the kitchen. I'm not even sure you're supposed to serve food once it's gone to the wrong table. I was so tired, wasn't thinking and just let him leave it. No one came back after that to check on anything. Not even our original waitress. The food was rubbery and cold. I suspect that was due to sitting. We didn't even finish it. I didn't really want my son to eat as much as he did, remember single serving a fish and chips and we didn't even finish the whole piece of fish & didn't even take more than a few chips. The chips I suspect might've tasted good when fresh they were rubbery maybe had we had the food when it was first fresh all of it would've tasted good. Here's the part that really makes me mad. Nobody came back once that food was delivered. It almost feels if they know they made a big mistake. Then when the bill came, there was never an apology ,not even we won't charge you full price for this. I'm not someone who expects or asks for discounts, I always tip well in fact I'm pissed that I did leave a tip at all. I felt guilty for leaving only 18% but then the more I thought about it I was mad had to leave any tip considering what occurred. I feel I had to because they stand over you while you sign the handheld machine I really wanted to like this place but each time I've gone in there something happens only this time I felt compelled to write a review because I left having spent close $40 for the worst meal and service I have received...
Read moreWe have been customers at their former address for a few years. Its always been good english comfort food and friendly british hosts. Now that they are moved into their new premises the good food and friendly service have tripled! Last Sunday my brit husband and i stopped in for the Sunday roast. It was absolutely the best roast, bar my husbands roast dinners, that we have ever had anywhere including those in England. Absolutely enormous portions. Those brits know how to eat! I cant tackle a huge roast like that but they offer a sunday roast baguette so i ordered that and omg was that good. I had the chicken. The baguette was stuffed with chicken, buttered and warmed. It came with roast potatoes, a small sausage, stuffing balls, a piece of english bacon and a bowl of piping hot gravy. It was still too large to finish but i took it home and finished it for supper. My hubs roast dinner was as i described, enormous and done perfectly. Today we stopped in to try the fish n chips, something they couldnt offer at the previous place. I wasnt overly hungry so i got a toasty and chips and the hubby got the fish n chips. Haddock. They thoughtfully offer haddock or cod. When the meal came my toasty and huge pile of chips was so nice! The husbands fish was so so nice. Im happy to say he shared with me so i can tell you the batter on the fish was crisp and light. It was so flavorful! The food is great just as it was in the old place and they have a large store to purchase british grocery items. The thing that makes this the place to go is the people who own it and the people who work there. Everyone does their very best to make your time there as pleasant as possible and thats why we return over and over again. This new place also offers a quieter room to sit and eat in. It can get a bit noisy if there is a football( soccer) match on but that quiet room is perfect for families and people looking for a quieter place to dine. They have been in the new place for 4 weeks now and I think that, to customers, it is a smooth transition. I hope they are there for many many years. Would it look odd if we went tomorrow for the Sunday roast again? I think not! No picture cuz i never think about it until im nearly finished....
