If you’re looking for a classic American diner, this is it. I gave the food a three but I still very much enjoyed my meal and I’d absolutely come back. You get a lot of food for the price and I was full when I left.
The interior is exactly what you expect, harkening back to the classic image of what a diner like this is supposed to feel like. The staff was friendly and attentive, my coffee was never empty nor was my water. The food was filling and I think it tasted good, I don’t hold personal taste preferences (like more pepper or spice) against a place unless the food is genuinely just bad.
I think people forget that this is diner food, it’s going to be more bland and toned down. That said, it didn’t do more than live up to my expectations, and while that still meant the food was good and I’d come back, a few minor things could be tweaked to add some spice to things.
I got the New York Benedict, and it was fantastic, personal taste would be to add more pepper to the salmon but the eggs and sauce were beautifully cooked.
I got the potatoes with onions and that boosted the flavor, but I’d suggest a little more crispiness to the potato and to add pepper there too just to add some brightness, or a potato spice mixture of some kind. Not spicy, just more flavor.
I’d also suggest to the feta cheese portion smaller and reduce the price. I got it as a side to add to my potatoes, and while I did eat all of it and it was delicious, I’m also a big lover of feta.
I’d imagine most people aren’t expecting that large of a portion of feta nor eating all of it. You’d save money by giving out smaller feta portions and reducing the price, if people need more they’ll ask.
I mean it when I say I’d come back, and I will. The staff was wonderful the environment is classic and nostalgic, and the food was good despite my notes. It’s all you’d want from a small town diner, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a...
Read moreWe had just finished a great hour of fun at Escape This and took our party of 6 out for a meal. It was my daughter's birthday and this place had decent reviews and a large selection of food. We aren't from Frederick and we were looking for some place to try that wasn't a chain place.
We arrived at roughly 3:50ish (for you natives we left Escape This around 330ish give or take a few minutes).
We were seated and had our drinks fairly quickly. We ordered our food by 4:10ish. And we waited.
And waited.
And waited.
About 30 minutes after we ordered the staff informs me that I'll need to wait another 40 minutes for their fried chicken (which is interesting as their website says to expect 25 minutes and this was WELL after we had ordered so why is it taking almost double the expected time?). I'd seen plenty of this chicken go to tables around me but fine. I accepted their offer to take the half of a roasted chicken.
And back to waiting.
We finally got an appetizer.
And then we waited.
Catching my drift yet?
Tables that came in after us were getting their food. I sat with an empty glass for a good 20 minutes at one point.
Finally they bring our food out. At this point it had been over 90 minutes since we had ordered. I'd also like to state this was more than 40 minutes after I was asked to change my chicken order so I didn't wait 40 minutes! So not only did I wait even longer than they said, I didn't even get what I wanted and instead had my substituted chicken.
My daughter's order was wrong.
Her friends order was cold.
So the birthday girl got to watch everyone else eat while she waited another 15 minutes for her food.
We spent 130 dollars and it was a horrible experience. I would not return when I'm in Frederick and I suggest others seek...
Read moreI wanted to love this experience based on the "good feels" from attempting to support a local, non-chain business.
Based on a solid 4.0 trip advisor score (as of 8/2024), and a decent area restaurant ranking for breakfast, I was confident this would be a successful experience.
I regretted that attempt, and based on the below experience and observations, I conclude there is just no pride of ownership here - and from that piece of information, the rest of the experience all makes sense.
We were seated at a dirty table with a pond of spilled drinks still underneath the table. No interest in properly cleaning tables from a prior guest.
The family ordered waffles, pancakes, eggs, bacon, and sausage in a variety of dishes. The waffle was ok. The pancakes were not - none of the kids liked these, and my wife remarked that the grocery store pancake mix would have been an improvement.
The scrambled eggs were ok--very flat but barely completely cooked - slightly runny. The sausage was very gristly and did not have good flavor.
What was the most stunning was all of the food put in front of me came out on very badly chipped plates.
I remarked on some disappointment in the experience to both the server and front end manager, neither were interested in taking action - even a small gesture to comp a kid's chocolate milk after having to wear some of the prior guest's drinks pooled in the corner and side of our table.
As the experience left he family with a fairly grumpy start to the day, my wife joked we'd have been better off just getting a dozen donuts for about $15 than spending $65 on a family breakfast.
Very disappointing experience, we'll cross this one off the list of...
