Update December 2021 - ended up here for breakfast for the first time in a long time and the tacos were solid. We all enjoyed it, so I’m cautiously optimistic things are trending back to the old days and bumping it up another star. Fingers crossed!
2021 : Because I hate to give up on a place thats close to home, I’ve been by Rudy’s two times for breakfast tacos and once for sandwiches with the family for lunch since the new year started. It’s been pretty consistently good and although the sandwiches were a little dry, overall I wanted to bump the place back up a star to 3. With local competition like Hutchins and Tenders just to name a few, they should definitely be worried and obsessive about quality control. Just one guys opinion of course, but unless I’m in a gambling mood I usually pay more elsewhere these days. When it’s good, it’s really good, is the takeaway here.
2/24/20 : I used to brag to to everyone that this place had the best breakfast tacos. Ive made two trips to Dallas over the last couple months and both times the tacos were pretty lousy. As in this time the whole family was with me and we just looked at each other. I threw half of my tacos away. One off day i could see but both my last two visits were so disappointing i doubt I'll ever return for breakfast. It was my favorite go to place. Not sure what happened guys but... sad.
2018: Used to love it, especially for breakfast - now I just "like" it. I used to think they were the best BBQ in town until I found Hutchins BBQ in McKinney (they also have a Frisco location I haven't been to). Hutchins crushes this place in every way, except that Rudy's is on my way home in the mornings and the tacos here are really good (most of the time.)
Updated 7/2/2017 : Our last tacos here were so devoid of flavor I took two bites out of each and just threw them away. That's not typical - but it can be really hit and miss on the brisket quality here I've noticed in the last few months. Most of the time it's above average. Other times you'll wonder why...
Read moreAfter eating at Hutchin’s BBQ, I think it’s hard for any other barbecue restaurant to measure up. We actually came here today because Hutchins was so full.
Pros: the restaurant was very clean, the food was hot and the meat was very moist and flavorful. The staff was also nice.
Cons: the barbecue sauce was just not good. There are two options, the original sauce and the sissy sauce. I understand why there is a sissy sauce, because the original sauce is very spicy, and I couldn’t eat it. The sissy sauce didn’t have any depth of flavor at all, though. It was tangy...and nothing else. Typically I look for a barbecue sauce to be tangy, smoky and a little bit sweet, and there were none of those other two elements in the Rudy’s sauce. The sauce also wasn’t served heated, but in individual prepackaged containers, much like how one would find a ketchup packet. I ended up eating the meat without any sauce.
My husband got the new potatoes as a side, but he said they were hard, and they tasted so bad he ended up getting potato chips instead. He and I agreed the barbecue flavor from the chips was sadly better than the flavor from the sauce. The beans I had were okay, but once again, kind of spicy. I only ended up eating half of it.
It was over $30 for my husband and I to eat there, and considering we weren’t that crazy about any of it, we were pretty disappointed. I don’t know if most people would feel this way if this were their first Texas barbecue experience though, because as stated, the meat itself is very good. For that reason I give it 3 stars. If they improved their sauce or side items I think it would be a much...
