TLDR: Attentive staff, something for everyone on the menu (traditional diner or fusion “brunch”), comfortable diner atmosphere.
Today was my first time eating at 43rd St Deli since they moved to the new building. I only wish I hadn’t waited so long to visit. I’ve felt a void in the brunch scene without Ivey’s, Civilization, Leonardo’s 706, and Daybreak Pleasant St., (etc…) and I honestly did not expect 43rd St Deli to scratch that itch, but they very much did today.
The staff was very helpful, prompt, and attentive from the moment we walked in. We got there around 10 am and did not have to wait to be seated. I also observed the staff promptly bussing and turning tables over throughout our meal.
The menu does an excellent job balancing classic diner fare with modern, fusion menu items that the brunch crowd (a la avocado toast trope) would like to see. For example, the menu features Opus coffee and cold brew along with a house blend. For my husband and I, having craft/artisan coffee, especially a cold brew or iced coffee, on the menu is a huge draw, but I am sure there are traditionalists who are happy (and insistent) to have the house blend available. This shows a really thoughtful understanding of their customer base that may not be as apparent to people who are not long-time Gainesville residents, and I can imagine this is a real challenge to a lot of restaurants and businesses in the area. I know they say “you can’t please everyone” but 43rd St Deli is getting pretty close!
I ordered the hoecakes breakfast (topped with a blueberry lavender compote and corn flakes) with eggs and bacon and my husband had the breakfast wrap with home fries. The food came out quickly, was hot, and everything was delicious. They also offer a sizable rotating specials menu, which keeps things interesting for adventurous regulars.
I look forward to bringing friends and family who visit here in the future knowing there will be something everyone can enjoy and we will have a comfortable,...
Read moreWe've visited multiple times, and only wish we had tried it sooner. The NW location is in the thick of a hopping Saturday morning area, but tucked away across the street from the busiest of it. We started coming here because one of our group likes to have more breakfast choices that aren't so egg-forward.(They have plenty of egg options, but also options where egg is an ingredient instead of the main event and even some amazing features without eggs at all.)
We've never had anything we didn't like. Ever. Service is friendly and flexible. (Recently I was distracted by friends and forgot to customize my order as I normally would. When I remembered it, I checked to see if it was too late to adjust. They were super kind about it, and the kitchen crew was very easy going about it as well. Everything turned out perfect as always.)
Our policy is to try any special that sounds good because we can have regular menu items on some other visit. Specials are so good that two of us still have regular menu items we haven't gotten around to yet.
The dining area has booths and tables, so if there are mobility/accessibility issues in your group, they are better able to help than most breakfast spots. And walkway space between tables is comfortable for guests with wheelchairs or walkers.
There is a lot of parking, but sometimes there are a lot of cars. We have always been able to get a spot, but sometimes we are taking the only open one there is.
The dining crowd here skews local, but a very eclectic kind of local. You will see young families, tables of older couples, the requisite "older guys with coffee" table, and so on. We have enjoyed visits with very traditional eaters and others who will always try something new, all at the same table, and all...
Read moreNow first and foremost I would like to start that my waiter and the service he provided was above average. An that my companys sandwich was made quite well but, for when I walked in to a dirty restaurant with plates and cups all over the tables to dirty booths that we sat at. This just did not become a promising brunch for a restaurant I have heard so much rave about. The worst part that made me utterly cringe was the food, now coming from the restaurant business my self as a breakfast cook I was pleasantly surprised by the quality on the plate. Until I began to cut my plate of over medium eggs, homefries , and chesse grits. The eggs where over easy, the homefries where soaked in oil and only half way cooked it seemed like, and the grits where filled with lumps and what seemed like a whole block of Swiss chesse in a tiny bowl. The only part that was eatable was the poppy seed bagel I don't know maybe there was a new cook or the " real " breakfast cook went home early but my food was not at all what I thought...
