I've been a longtime patron of this store and feel it's important to provide honest feedback, both for the business and for those considering visiting. This review is detailed because I believe context matters. I'm posting under a pseudonym because one of the store’s owners has previously used private customer information, such as sales history, to try to discredit negative reviews. I’ve seen them respond to critical feedback by referencing what a person did or didn’t buy, or attempting to downplay concerns by pulling up internal data to undermine the reviewer’s credibility. That behavior makes regulars second-guess whether it’s worth saying anything at all. Since I still shop here and attend events, I would rather avoid that kind of attention or retaliation.
To cover the basics: the store is clean, visually appealing, and well maintained. The owners have clearly put effort into creating a modern, welcoming space that avoids the stereotypical “basement game store” atmosphere. The play space is spacious, the bathrooms are consistently clean, and the VIP rooms, which can be booked online, are a great feature.
The staff are generally friendly and attentive, especially with regular customers. However, based on what I’ve seen, some store practices come across as selective. I’ve noticed signs of favoritism, with popular products sometimes held back for preferred customers or friends. This can be especially frustrating when those items are no longer available to others who show up hoping to purchase them.
The event calendar is full, with recurring offerings across various trading card games, board games, and open D&D sessions. That said, the cost to participate is noticeably higher than at other local stores, and the value does not always reflect the premium price. I’ve been to events that felt disorganized, including “learn to play” nights where no one was clearly prepared to teach. I’ve also seen tournament organizers respond rudely or dismissively to players asking fair questions. These issues make it harder to justify the higher entry fees.
A more serious concern involves store management. The general manager, who is usually present during off-peak hours, has made negative remarks about customers within earshot of others, assuming no one is listening. I have personally overheard these comments, which included insensitive remarks about customers’ appearance, interests, and behavior. While everyone vents now and then, this went beyond that and came across as cruel. For a space that welcomes many queer and neurodivergent individuals, this kind of conduct creates an environment that feels unsafe and unwelcoming.
I also have concerns about the store’s pricing strategies. Many products are priced at or even above online secondary market rates, significantly over MSRP. While I understand that some high-demand items are more expensive to restock, the markups on many products feel excessive, especially when these items are obtained at wholesale prices. What makes this worse is how feedback is handled. In their Discord community, questions about pricing are quickly shut down, and members have been muted for simply asking about it. When concerns are raised, the response is often something like, “You’re welcome to buy it elsewhere if you can find it.” That kind of reply feels dismissive and unprofessional, especially from a business that promotes itself as a community space.
At the end of the day, this store succeeds despite itself. It stays afloat thanks to a steady stream of new customers who have not yet had these experiences, and longtime patrons who quietly tolerate the dysfunction or eventually leave. And that’s a shame. With more humility, openness, and basic respect for the people who support them, this could be a truly great local game store. But as it stands, it often feels like a place that merely tolerates its community rather than one that...
Read moreTABLES ARE FREE, HIGH QUALITY WORKMANSHIP/MATERIALS, AND CLEAN!! They also have more private rooms and tables to rent for an incredibly fair price if desired! PunkOuter is easily the best LGS store I have ever been in, even when considering every single factor. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. I have never had a less than superb experience with a staff member, even when I didn't buy anything and was just browsing, or while just being greeted in passing. The staff has harbored a safe environment for all ages, so anyone can go in.
The prices are amazing. A large amount of their sales are online, which shows that their products are very competitively priced! I coincidentally come across their online listings all the time just because they happen to have some of the best prices, even vs other online sellers! And I'm blessed to live within 3 miles of the physical store.
Tables, floors, counters, etc are all clean and tidy. They host various weekly tournaments for most card games, even smaller and more niche ones like Wixoss. I've loved every second I've spent in this store! They have a great selection of well priced snacks and drinks, although I do wish there were more vegan snack options.
I don't go anywhere else to shop in physical stores anymore other than here. Even their online presence and wide game variety coverage is excellent in their Discord and social medias. I think a decent % of the discord members don't even live in Gainesville, and maybe not even Florida or the US at all, but still hang out there because the community PunkOuter has created is amazing.
Naturally, I believe they will soon move to a subscription based table reserving system, as well as renting out individual tables to people as needed if the tables are all full, so I highly suggest becoming a part of the community and utilizing their free tables before they inevitably grow to the point that rentals are required on busier days. Even if that happens, I'm sure the prices will be incredibly fair!
TLDR:
Staff: 1,000,000/10 Prices: 10/10 Cleanliness: 10/10 Variety: 10/10, and they are always open to requests!! Tables:10/10 Displays: 10/10 Overall: 11/10

Read moreThis used to be my favorite shop in town, and I’ve spent hundreds—if not thousands—of dollars here over the years. I’ve been collecting cards for decades, and I really wanted to keep supporting PunkOuter. Unfortunately, the changes they’ve made have alienated customers in several major ways.
New location - While the move sounded like a good idea at first, the space is actually smaller and overcrowded. It’s hard to walk between tables, and the lack of space makes it nearly impossible for anyone with a wheelchair, service animal, or mobility aid to move around comfortably. As someone who uses a medical device, I feel completely unwelcome in a space that I can’t even navigate safely. On top of that, the complaints about cannabis smells (which are from a legal medicine in Florida) ring hollow when the same regulars show up reeking of body odor and sour milk. In a cramped space, unpleasant smells are only amplified.
Pricing practices - This isn’t a retail store—it’s a “market value” store. Instead of selling at retail, they regularly price products at whatever the secondary market dictates. That might be defensible if the product wasn’t available elsewhere, but when you can buy the same sealed product at retail in other local shops, it feels exploitative. If I wanted to pay inflated market prices, I wouldn’t bother shopping here.
Staff changes - What really sealed my decision to stop shopping here is the treatment of staff. The employees who made the store a friendly, welcoming environment—the very people who built community and made customers want to come back—were let go. Without them, the shop feels transactional and cold.
Overall, PunkOuter went from being a place I loved to a place I no longer feel comfortable supporting. Between accessibility issues, questionable pricing, and losing the people who gave the shop its heart, this is no longer the welcoming community space it once was.
