Renowned American Chinese Chef Launches Small-Bowl Dishes, Instantly Becomes a Hit

I can’t believe I’ve never been to a Peter Chang restaurant before! I went for the first time today with a friend for a Sunday brunch. I’m SO happy this place is close to where I live and plan to visit many more times in the future! From the moment we pulled into the parking lot, the building was fun and brightly painted with clean curb and parking spaces. When we entered there was a beautiful little seating area for customers waiting for a table but, there was no line when we arrived at 11:45/12:00 and already customers enjoying their meals. The atmosphere was friendly and really inviting. We were immediately welcomed and shown to our table. The interior was really nicely decorated like a modern garden but not too over done. The Sunday brunch menu included dim sum and small plates for a reasonable price and nice portion sizes as well as hand crafted summer cocktails. Everything was delicious! We ordered our own small plates and dim sum: shrimp spring rolls, beef pancakes, pork soup dumplings, braised pork boa burger, chili oil pork wontons. We also order the Gin Plum and lemon Martin that was a beautiful and fun purple color with a sun dried lemon garnish (see photo). The bartender personally brought our drinks to us, introducing herself and appreciating our compliments. The service was top notch! Very professional and I can tell they are seasoned workers in the food and hospitality industry. Our waiters stopped to talk to us for a bit about the restaurant moving from Rockville and how there are 16 others in the DC, MD, VA area. She mentioned the flagship restaurant in Bethesda and a new restaurant opening in Herndon. My friend and I really appreciated the time she took to care for our meal and our overall experience. I see the middie reviews and I have to say, I completely disagree! With the amount of restaurants in Montgomery village/Gaithersburg, I think there are some quick to find other places to choose and therefore don’t retain a sedentary of loyalty to restaurants that are true gems to this area. I for one will be a repeat customer and I hope to share my experience with as many people as I can so they too can enjoy this amazing restaurant with their families and friends.

Peter Chang Restaurant, under the ownership of the acclaimed chef, Mr. Peter Chang, first opened its doors approximately a decade ago. Since then, it has flourished into a chain of 13 restaurants spanning across Maryland, Virginia, and Connecticut. The latest addition to this chain is the Peter Chang Gaithersburg, which recently debuted near the bustling Costco Wholesale Store. Unlike other Peter Chang’s restaurants, this new branch introduces a fresh concept by offering smaller, Chinese-style tapas dishes. Eager to explore this novel dining experience, 13 members of our dinner club decided to give this new venue a try. With a seating capacity for about 40 guests and an additional private room accommodating up to 20, the venue boasts a modern ambiance infused with elements of traditional Chinese décor. When we were there, the restaurant was abuzz with customers eagerly waiting in lines. In addition to indulging in two larger dishes—Peking Duck (北京烤鸭) and Crispy Seabass (香酥鲈鱼)—each of us selected a tapas-sized dish. Overall, every dish proved satisfying, boasting vibrant colors and robust flavors. I conducted a post-dinner survey asking which dishes are the top of the list, and their overall satisfaction of the restaurant, environment, service and food. The top dishes included the Peking Duck (北京烤鸭), Lion’s Head (狮子头), Black Pepper Beef Fillet (黑椒牛柳粒), Shadow Beef Cubes (灯影牛肉粒), Oil-Splashed Noodles (油泼面), and Salted Crispy Chicken (盐酥鸡). The average satisfaction score, with a standard deviation, ranged from 4.2±0.7 to 4.5±0.9, reflecting unanimous approval from our group. Oh yes, we are a group of people with analytic minds. We had to do it in a scientific way, LOL. Thus, we all endorse this new establishment, recommending it to those seeking a unique twist on Chinese cuisine. As an added bonus, the venue offers karaoke entertainment for enthusiasts in the private room; however, we suggest investing in an improved sound system for a more enjoyable experience. While the absence of alcoholic beverages was a regret, we were assured that this offering is forthcoming, adding another layer of appeal to this already attracting dining destination.

Im reposting, as there is no way to reply to the comment provided by the owners. I followed up with the management via email and submitted my receipt for the refund, as promised in the reply of this review, this was over a week ago, no one has gotten back to me on this. If youre going to give responses and offer a refund, please follow through on it.

My review from last week:

This is the third time I came to this location. Some of the food on the menu is actually very tasty whereas others not so much . The small sized option concept is a good concept. In comparison to other Chinese restaurants this place is not very generous with their serving amounts yet charges much higher rates. There is an option for small portion sized food but even the sections of regular portion food, the amount served is small and not exactly shareable . If the goal here is to turn this into ‘fine dining’ where you pay high price and receive small amount then first the location for it is not proper and second you have to train your staff to offer fine dining experience and the food would really have to be top notch . With the price offered, free rice should be included but they charge you a $1 per bowl. The server we had did not speak or understand us very well nor did she understand the group that was sitting behind us in a booth. You could hear the frustration in the man’s voice as the was trying to place his order with his group. This really falls on the management and how they divide up staff . Chinese only speaking servers should be assigned to Chinese customers. Everyone else who is not Chinese nor has the ability to communicate in the language, should have a server who is bilingual or English speaker. So even if they are under staffed, the Manager of the location should step in and act as the server to support the others. Managers role is not to sit back and tell ppl what to do but to be there on the ground with the waiters and fill in the gaps where needed. So if you know your server is struggling with the English language , you as the English speaker go up to the tables and make sure everything is ok and see if there are any questions.

We were excited about Peter Chang opening in our area as we enjoyed the food when they were in Rockville but likely we won’t be coming back . It’s over priced , amount served is minimal and overall staff service not that good. When you order here, it’s not shareable like...

Disappointed. I have been waiting to eat out at this newly opened Peter Chang restaurant for months. Sunday late afternoon arrival around 4pm, only my husband and I and two other tables seated. I ordered the house tea, he ordered a coke (which came in a can - so no free refills). As the dishes are more of a tapas style we ordered somethings to share. We ordered the Crystal Shrimp Dumplings (3 large), the Lions Head Meatballs (1 large), Spicy Crispy Eggplant, and Combination (chicken, shrimp, beef) Lo Mein. The waitress asked if we wanted rice and I said yes (mostly for the meatball) due to the sauce. The menu does not mention white rice with orders, so being asked was nice. First out of the kitchen was the Lo Mein and the meatball. While chopsticks were available (I still haven't mastered the art), no forks were on the table. While waiting for the other items to arrive, my husband started with the Lo Mein, which was cold. As the dish came out to the table rather quickly we questioned if it was made to order. When our server arrived with the dumplings and eggplant dishes, my husband told her the Lo Mein was cold, and I requested forks. She took the Lo Mein back to the kitchen and it was returned to the table hot. Oh, there is no soy sauce available on the table, so we requested some. The dumplings were hot and very good, but not served with any dipping sauce (?). The crispy eggplant was also missing a dipping sauce. We never received the rice. We then ordered two sharable portions of Mapo Tufo and Lemoncello Shrimp. Another server brought the dishes to the table and I again requested two orders of rice and told the server we never received them earlier. Unfortunately the shrimp dish was cold, the Mapo Tofu was great, but still no rice. Our server walked by a couple of times, but without stopping to ask how everything was or if we needed anything? Still no rice. The other server we made our 2nd rice request from, walked past 3 times, but did not drop off the rice. I finally had to signal our server for the check. I gave a glowing review for the Peter Chang restaurant in Rockville a few years ago. I looked forward to them opening in Gaithersburg which is closer to home. But, I have to say I won't be returning anytime soon. Could be new restaurant kinks being worked out, but I don't no. What I do know is our dining experience this evening was a big...

THIS IS IN RESPONSE TO THE OWNERS REPLY: We are so sorry for the incident they occurred and we understand the inconvenience of the situation. One of our managers Jean was working to negotiate a cleaning fee and we settled on a number . After being told we would need to wait to get a check from our head office you refused the deal. We are sorry we could not meet your needs.

THIS IS FALSE, these shoes are composed of Napa Leather and can NOT just be easily cleaned. I had to have them SPECIALLY TREATED and the stains are PERMANENT. Your manager "Jean" would not even SPEAK to me nor would any of your other Staff. I was told to bring the receipt for the shoes, after providing one, that was not good enough, so I had to supply not only my receipt, my order, and the payment of method. I was told this was going to be submitted to your insurance. When I returned, I was given a VERY ridiculous low ball offer of $300 which does not even cover the cleaning kit. I ACCEPTED the offer and was told to come back 6 hours later for a CASH SETTLEMENT. When I returned, I was told there was NO cash and I had to WAIT for a CHECK to be cut sometime in the future. At this point, I wanted to proceeded with a CIVIL LAWSUIT and was TOLD by your staff to call the police to get a report filed, so I did. As I was waiting in my car, your VERY aggressive employee, the only one who could actually communicate with me as he was the only one there who spoke English, he called the police and had me BANNED FROM YOUR ESTABLISHMENT. Now if you would like to revisit this issue before I move forward with my attorney, please contact me. You have all my information.

Worst experience in my life. Was there with a large party and it took over an hour and a half just for us to get our food which came very cold. A waitress ended up knocking over a bowl of sauce on my shoes valued at $2000 and tried to claim that I assaulted her. The owner, Jane tried to settle with me for a ridiculously small amount of money and refuses to provide me with any type of insurance information for the business and contact information. I will be pursuing a civil lawsuit against this company. There is also one waiter there the only one who speaks English, and he became very intimidating and was displaying acts of...
