This building is full of history. Used to be a meat processing plant built in 1912. In 1979 it opened as the restaurant. It was one of the first building reuse projects in the country as that was not a thing back then. It was in all the major newspapers and even wall street journal. Still has the ammonia cooling system on the ceiling and the racks for hanging the sides of beef. Still has original cooler doors. Really a neat place. The food was ok. I had NY strip with mushrooms and gravey and mashed potatoes and salad bar. Salad bar was really nice. My steak was cooked great but it was blackened so had a little burnt taste and it did not say blackened on menu. Mashed potatoes were grainy more like smashed. Wife had teriyaki salmon and baked potatoes. The salmon was very good. Baked potatoes was good. Son had bourbon burger and onion rings. The burger was good but a little dry. The onion rigs were string onion rings instead of traditional. He did not like onion rings. It was expensive. For our meal it was around 83 before tip.

We have come to The Packing House about five times now. Whenever we travel from Cincinnati to Omaha we make a stop in Galesburg and make a point to stop at The Packing House. We love the complimentary cinnamon rolls and the cinnamon butter dip. We have never had a bad eating experience here in the past five times we've been here. The salad bar has always been fresh. We mostly come at dinner time but we did come one other time in the afternoon. The first time we came here we were all very impressed that the chef was making his homemade desserts for the night. It's a very comfortable casual place, but the food is delicious like a semi fine dining establishment. I had the Portobello mushroom sandwich. It was delicious. Salad bar was delicious. Their tea looked a little cloudy but it tasted fresh and was good. I'm a tea fanatic. We've had their desserts before. Very good. We love it and we make a point to come here every time. This time our server was Kollisa. She was friendly and did a wonderful job. I highly recommend making a stop here.

Update: Tried the Sunday brunch and it was "ok". I had higher expectations coming out of our last visit. Several of the items (like eggs) were getting older (around 1230/1245 when ended at 2). The cinnamon roll things seem different in the past. They were flat, dense and a bit cold/dry. The price point was still amazing and for the price and salad bar and hot food pretty good deal (even if we weren't blown away). ‐--------- This was by far the best meal we ate in Galesburg! I'd normally give it a 4, but we were disappointed in the majority of other places in Galesburg, so feel they deserve a 5 instead. We had the baked potato/salad bar and BLT Salmon Sandwich. Adding salad bar to sandwhich was inexpensive & eorth it. Reasonably priced and the food was fresh and tasty. Service was good too! Did notice a musty/dirty type smell in certain areas, but blocked it and enjoyed the food! Will definitely be back! Would like to try their Sunday brunch.

I had dinner at the Packing House with a small group of friends. I am a very big person(obese), dining out isn't always the most enjoyable experience. I have never enjoyed sitting on smaller (probably what most people would consider normal-sized) chairs for any length of time. Many restaurants are not very accommodating to this, not to mention asking for assistance is embarrassing and makes me feel like the center of attention, which I generally would prefer to avoid. When we were being seated, I noticed the chairs surrounding the table were too narrow for me to comfortably sit in, and mentioned it to the hostess, who then retrieved an armless chair. This wasn't going to work, but then our server, Seslie offered to move the back booth, increasing the distance from the seat to the table making it possible for me to sit in it comfortably. The server pulled up another table to the booth to accommodate the rest of our party, and with some minimal rearrangements (nothing more than I think you would normally have, if you showed up unannounced to a restaurant with a group of people) we were all able to be seated comfortably together. I was later told that they hadn't suggested it at first because they are conscientious of not embarrassing their larger patrons that need such accommodations. I am writing this review to make people aware that the Packing House is not only accommodating, but considerate about being accommodating, and that is not often my experience with other restaurants. If you are a larger person, ask to be seated at the booth toward the back of the restaurant. we were able to enjoy a wonderful dining experience and this was the most comfortable I have been dining out in a long time. If you stop in on a Friday or Saturday, I highly recommend the prime rib, it really was terrific, and once again thank you Seslie, the service you provided...

My date and I (our first) went there for the first time on New Years Eve about 2:00. I had reserved a booth the night before just in case it was going to be really busy/crowded because of the holiday weekend. It turned out they weren't very busy at that time of day, at least on that particular day. I had chosen the place because of online reviews and the interesting atmosphere but thought, because of the holiday, we would have to settle for lower level cooks/kitchen staff and probably lesser service etc. I was wrong !! Our hostess and waitress were very attentive, professional, and quite obviously knew what they were doing. I ordered a 7&7 which came promptly although a bit stronger than I expected or desired at that time of day. Lol. Not a big deal as that's what I would have loved at maybe a 7:00pm dinner. My fault for expecting a watered down or weak drink. The Shrimp Cocktail ordered prior to dinner was awesome. The Shrimp we're very large and the cocktail sauce wasn't "overly" spicy like some places tend to overdo. I was going to order a steak but, pricing was around 30 dollars (give or take a little) and I still had the mindset that the kitchen staff may be their holiday crew or fill in low level personnel so I and my date ordered mid level dishes. The food was awesome and looking back, I should have went ahead and went all out. It would have been worth it. This place is fantastic and I'm definitely going to return often. Reservations for evening meals would likely be a good idea, especially if you have more than 2 attending. I'm sure there could be a short wait for a table during busier dinner hours. Attire is casual which is regretful for so many finer establishments these days but dressing for dinner seems to be a thing of the past now. I absolutely...

I appreciate the fact that they recently opened under new management. However, our experience was not worth going back. Knowing that we had a reservation you would of thought that the table would of been set up with silverware, water glasses, and salad plates, etc. Instead, a girl brings out the dishwasher container and starts handing us silverware out of it and hands us a pile of napkins. We waited to get salad plates. When our order came out two potatoes that were to be “loaded potatoes” had no toppings, one plate was missing the vegetables, steaks had to be sent back as not cooked as ordered. Should I mention that our waitress could not even tell us what the vegetable of the night was nor did she offer to go find out. After saying twice that we did not get the vegetable we ordered - we never got it. Potatoes came out with no butter or sour cream as ordered. Asked three different times for butter and sour cream we were told, “they are working on it.” Finally, when it did arrive the potatoes were now cold. Big disappointment no more cinnamon rolls or bread on the salad bar. Out of many things on the salad bar. My daughter had brought in a birthday cake that she gave the hostess that the waitress couldn’t seem to locate for quite awhile. Lastly, a couple in our party paid with a debit card the waitress took their card first and we waited and waited and asked several times, “why they hadn’t been back with their card?” The reply, “we took it to a different register.” It was great it was a busy night for them but maybe need to be better prepared especially if you knew you had a reservation. We like to try to support new local businesses and it our hopes that others will have a better experience...
