Review of Salsas Restaurant – Galveston, Texas
Dining out is more than just eating food—it’s about the overall experience a restaurant provides. From ambiance and cleanliness to service and the quality of the dishes, each component plays a role in making a visit memorable. Unfortunately, my experience at Salsas in Galveston was disappointing in nearly every aspect.
Ambiance & Cleanliness The first impression of a restaurant is the atmosphere, and here Salsas falls short. The space feels dark and uninviting, the floors were noticeably dirty, and three of the tables we attempted to sit at were sticky to the touch. We were eventually accommodated at a table that the staff cleaned in front of us, but the lack of attention to basic cleanliness immediately set a poor tone for the visit.
Service A positive dining experience often relies on attentive and well-trained staff. Our server was cordial and clean in appearance, but beyond taking our order, offered little engagement—no suggestions, no attempt to enrich the visit. From observing other staff, it was also clear that training is not a strong point at this establishment. While I recognize the staffing challenges in Galveston, proper training remains fundamental in hospitality.
Food The greatest disappointment came with the food itself. We ordered Chicken Enchiladas and a Chile Relleno with ground beef. Presentation was fair at best—perhaps a 6 out of 10—but the taste was far worse. The enchiladas bore little resemblance to what the dish should be; the flavor and preparation were simply unacceptable. The chile relleno consisted of a poblano pepper stuffed with greasy, flavorless beef and topped with a poor-quality melted cheese. In both cases, the rice and beans were left untouched. Neither dish was finished; we could not even eat half of what was served.
Value Given the low quality of both food and service, the pricing feels unreasonably high. A restaurant’s cost should reflect quality, and here that balance is missing.
Conclusion If you are looking for a place in Galveston to enjoy a warm atmosphere, quality food, and good service with your family, Salsas is not the destination. My perspective is shaped by years working with Disney in Anaheim and my family’s history managing five-star restaurants in Los Angeles—experiences that taught me the importance of clean, comfortable, and welcoming spaces paired with food prepared with care. Salsas, unfortunately, falls far from...
Read moreAfter a day out in Galveston, I thought I would give this place a try. Mid afternoon, not too busy. I get seated and it takes 10 minutes before a young man shows up and asks what I would like to drink. About 10 minutes after that, a man comes by to apologize for the delay and offers to get me a drink. Another 10 minutes and I have the drink and the 2nd man takes my order. He had recommended the shredded chicken tacos and told me they were amazing.
The plate looked appealing, but I have to say that it lacked greatly in flavor. The rice was very bland, except for a light bitterness that caught me off guard. The beans were OK, but suffered from a lack of basic seasoning. Maybe I am just spoiled from eating beans at Nana's in the valley, but these beans should have been better than they were.
The tacos were also very bland. The chicken looked seasoned, but with the addition of both salsas, onions, cheese, tomatoes & lettuce - just blah. I was disappointed and only ate 1 of the tacos - just not worth eating more.
The biggest disappointments were the 2 salsas. One red and the other looked like an avocado crema salsa verde. Both had subtle heat, the red more than the green. However both suffered from a blatant lack of flavor. I was super excited about the red salsa - it looked like it had all kinds of great ingredients. Low key flavor, as in barely there.
The drink I ordered was the Dead Gold Margarita. $13 or so. Flavor ok, but reality was that there was little of the drink in the glass. So much ice.
Would I come here again - no. At that time of day, service should have been stellar. The food just wasn't worthy at all and it's a shame because it looked good. The salsas really looked great...
Read moreWe went here on Independence Day so the entire town was packed with a population influx of tens of thousands. It was a sweltering day and we stopped here strictly because we couldn't go on walking in the extreme heat and everyone was getting hungry. We were desperate to get out of the heat and had a few hours to kill before the parade.
Enter Salsas! It was a pleasant surprise. The immediate fear upon entering was that it would be a very long wait but it was surprisingly short even though the place was packed out. There was also loads of seating and loads of waiting room space.
We were seated quickly and once ordered, our food came quickly considering the busyness of the day.
We all enjoyed our food and had been wanting to eat at a true Mexican-style restaurant. I'm not sure if this leans more Mexican or more Tex Mex, but it was good. My enchiladas were gorgeous. They were more Tex Mex as they used cheddar and flour tortillas, but oh so good. We ordered three regular meals and 3 from the kids menu. All were enjoyed. We had loads of leftovers because the portions were huge. Also the prices were very fair.
I would definitely recommend this place. It had a fun Mexican vibe and friendly staff.
The bathrooms were crazy - - only the ladies of course! But again, it was the 4th of July so I wouldn't judge them harshly. You had to stand in line about 10 minutes to use the ladies but I'm sure it isn't like that on the daily. Perhaps there was people coming in off the street to use them too 🤷🏻♀️
Thank you for a yummy experience and a little peace in the...
