Chose to try Barons and made a reservation for 815 pm. They called at 8:10 pm to let us know they were out of steaks, and most everything. They said they could only do burgers and pasta or salad. Pretty disappointing phone call to get as we were arriving. Since we had just arrived in the parking lot when they called and we'd just driven 5 hours from Wichita plus being a Saturday night we knew getting into another steakhouse would be difficult so we decided to go in and just see what they did have.
Turns out there's a fine dining side and a sports bar side. After the host apologized he compared this to Popeyes running out of chicken lol. A steakhouse running out of steak on a Saturday night at 8 pm seems crazy. We found out they did have some steak just none of the big steaks like porterhouse, filets, etc.
We settled on Salmon & Chicken fried steak plus the candy bacon appetizer.. They would not allow any substitutions on your side's and force you to buy an additional side if you want something different. My salmon meal was already pricey at $35 so I chose to forgo the baked potato I wanted sadly. It came with rice pilaf and asparagus. I wasn't thrilled with being forced into rice as I didn't want it but the meal was good. I was pleasantly surprised the asparagus was cooked really well. It's sad though that it was the highlight of our meal. The chicken fried steak came with asparagus and mashed potatoes. We also shared a house salad.
While the food was cooked perfectly it certainly was bland. I'd really suggest they look into using some salt, pepper, and garlic at a minimum in the future...maybe some accent for flavor? The candied bacon was an impressive show and delivery, tasted really good, but was like eating beef jerky. It was probably the 2nd highlight of the meal of the night but you had to saw through it with a knife and a fork couldn't pierce it lol.
Service was decent, servers were nice and attentive. They were quite embarrassed about running out of a lot of food and I felt bad for them. For a Saturday the restaurant was pretty empty (they said they just ran out before we got there). Not sure who they have as a food manager but clearly they need to work on that lol.
In the end, our bill was just over $106 with a $20 tip added on top. Was it worth it for the money? For me, no definitely not worth it. I've ate at many fine dining steakhouses and had much better food at this price point. I'd of expected this meal to run about $50-70 quite honestly. It feels like you ordered fine dining from temu.
Be prepared to spend a lot of money for pretty mediocre food with pretty small portions and smothered in whatever sauce they add. My salmon was swimming again in lime cream sauce lol. Be proactive and bring some Mrs Dash or your favorite seasoning blend...might suggest some accent...that would lol.
My final thoughts are I will probably not come back in the future when I travel to Garden City and I wouldn't really recommend them based on my experience. I hope they'll consider making some changes in the future to improve. I think Gordon Ramsey could come in and fix this place up...should give him a call. If they made some changes I...
Read moreI'm working a couple of months in Garden City, Kansas and I was told this was the fanciest restaurant with the best steaks by locals. The outside of the restaurant is very nice appealing inviting clean. Once I stepped in the door, the hostess was there to greet me. He asked if I wanted to sit in the sporty side or if I wanted to sit in the upscale luxury side. I opted to sit in the upscale dining area as the sporty area was really busy. Both areas looked very clean. Everything looks neat and in place.
My server was Daisy. She was really nice. She was kind attentive and did ask if I had any questions and made recommendations. The food was the worst part. Everyone gets complementary bread and butter. The bread on the outside looks like it might've been a little undercooked. It was a very light in color when I cut it open in the middle. It was pure dough. A gentleman had come to my table, and I informed him that the bread was doughy in the middle and requested another loaf of bread. The gentleman came back with bread that was also still very doughy in the middle. He told me he would bake another one, but at this point, I figured it's fine. I don't need the bread. The potato skins were really good. The ranch however, tasted like something sweet was dropped in it like a vinegar et there was something with the ranch. I don't know what was in it, but it tasted it had like a tangy sweet taste. I was not a fan of the ranch dressing. At this point, it made me very nervous to order anything else so I just opted to do dessert as most places can't mess up a dessert. I got the Molten lava cake with vanilla ice cream. That as I suspected was very good.
Unfortunately, I won't be revisiting this restaurant. They have potential to be a great place, but the food definitely lacks a...
Read moreI'm a doc in the hospital who travels here to work. As such, I eat all my dinners at local restaurants. I've eaten here at least a half dozen times. Last night, my filet was not cooked properly...again. I asked the bartender to look, what was supposed to be medium rare plus was less than rare. She sent it back. I had told her I don't eat pork so please remove the "bacon wrapped" part and my baked potato loaded, hold the bacon. The filet comes back properly cooked, but the potato I now noticed had bacon bits. I reminded her I asked for no pork. Not her fault she said, the manager prepared it. He's standing right here. When she left I explained I had been there a year ago with my wife on our anniversary and the waitress just dropped my filet along with my wife's meal and disappeared for 10 minutes. When I cut into it the filet was well done. When she finally came back I pointed this out and it was taken back. The return was rare. I told her, "just put it on the grill for 30 seconds and bring it back." It was medium well and I just ate. it I asked the manager, are you having trouble keeping people? You get them trained and then they leave and you have to start all over? He didn't answer. That was not a rhetorical question I added. Still no answer. I finally asked are you going to answer? I was waiting for you to be done he said. OK He said I want you out of here, I'm not going to let you berate my staff. "I never berated anyone, I merely pointed out I said no pork and there's bacon on my potato." I'll pay for your steak and glass of wine, but if you're not gone in 2 minutes I'm calling the police.
Save your money, eat someplace else. Of the at least 6 times I've eaten here, my steak was never cooked...
