I just finished my meal and I’m still at the restaurant. I could not wait to RAVE about the food here. I had to restrain myself from standing up in our booth and giving the kitchen a standing ovation.
I love diners, even though the food is usually pretty mid. As such, I went into this place for the first time with no expectations. We went at breakfast time on a random Thursday. We ordered steak & eggs, bacon omelette, pancakes, sausage, hash browns, and cheese grits. Our sweet server returned with our food in a very speedy 10 mins. (!)
I am VERY picky about Southern food. All my Maw-Maws, rest their souls, were native Southerners and legendary cooks. As such, I usually regard Southern food at restaurants with an air of skepticism. I have very high expectations. Everything has to be correct. I am delighted to report that absolutely everything we ate was PROPER. The cooking techniques were indicative of a master(s) at the grill. Sausage patties were slightly crispy on the outside, not too much, just right. The bacon omelette was fluffy, and filled with perfectly crispy and very nicely-flavored bacon. The steak was seasoned well but not too much, and cooked to perfect medium rare. The eggs over medium, which are difficult to master and require perfect timing, had perfectly runny yolks and firm whites. The pancakes were fluffy and had chewy outsides, but not too chewy. The cheese grits, ahhhh the cheese grits. They were perfectly seasoned, perfectly cheesy, not runny or soupy, not too dry, not mushy, and not undercooked. Like everything else, they were just right.
I saved the best for last: The star of the meal was the “hash browns,” which were basically Southern fried potatoes. At first bite, I made an embarrassing groan, and nearly wept. They were perfectly done inside, perfectly crispy outside, seasoned well, fried in good oil, but not too oily. My mom, who learned to cook from my Maw-Maws, used to make them like that. They are very difficult to get right, and restaurants never ever get them right, if they are even offered at all. But the wizard(s) at the West Street Diner nailed em!
I was dazzled. I was impressed. Much respect. This diner can COOK, y’all. If you miss Old South cooking like I do, go here and...
Read moreI went here because they had a cold turkey sandwich on the menu. The meat on the sandwich I got didn't resemble turkey in any way. It didn't smell, look or taste like turkey. The fries I got with it weren't cooked all the way. I might have asked why if anyone had cared to ask if my food was ok. I left three quarters of the sandwich and most of the fries on my plate and when the waitress took the plate, she didn't bother to ask why. Then the cashier, who in most places asks, how was the meal, didn't ask. Both knew the food they serve is terrible. They didn't need to ask. If you want a decent meal with edible food, I would go somewhere else. Update: After someone responded to my original review: My wife and I are at the end of a road trip of over 3 months from SC to Alaska and back. I have eaten cold plain turkey sandwiches across this country. Smoked, fried, baked and you name it. I happen to love cold turkey sandwiches. I haven't complained about one except the slop I was served here. The French fries were not even cooked correctly. The waitress never asked how the food was or I would have given it back, whether I had to pay or not. I ended up paying for a meal I never ate anyway. If anyone in the whole place had asked how it was, I would have been very happy to tell them. Of course she will say she did. She was very busy and never asked. She also never asked about getting almost the whole meal back when she cleared the table. She didn't care, just as the person who took my money didn't care. As far as my reviews I have written over 100. Many bad and many more very good. I don't write the bad ones very easily but this one was very easy. I will never be back in Germantown and never was there before. I have no axe to grind with this restaurant. I just...
Read moreI have never left a restaurant so frustrated and angry. We were there late morning before the lunch rush. I only give this diner a one star because most of my veggies were actually good. The 4th, turnip greens were too salty to eat. When I asked the waitress to please remove that charge from my ticket, she scratched it off and walked off with NOTHING! No apology, no substitution, NO RESPONSE. WE were never asked for a refill or checked on after the food arrived. WE felt rushed to order and like we were holding up the waitress. When we paid the bill, I asked the older lady to please remove the 4th veggie charge. She said "YOU DIDN'T LIKE THE TURNIP GREENS??" I explained that they were just too salty for my taste. I paid the bill, left a tip ( however they deserved nothing, just like the customer service I received) I then told the older lady cashier " THANK YOU". She never looked up, responded, said they were sorry, no "thank you".......nothing! I am very disappointed in the customer service we received, after I have heard only good things about this establishment. Needless to say, we will not be coming back!! Customer service...
