Dee's One Smart Cookie Bakery — Restaurant in Glastonbury

Hands on staff with a heart of gold! I came here from Warwick, Rhode Island on a little getaway and this was the spot I knew I needed to visit! I’ve been gluten and dairy free since I was 12 due receiving chemotherapy and a total thyroidectomy from being born with Graves Disease. Down in Rhode Island we only have about three bakeries that have really good items with my sensitivities taking into account however I’m allergic to most nuts due to the cross contamination of peanuts and I find it that I can’t visit them because of this (on top of them not being the best option for a quick treat vs. my many personal attempts at doing anything fully gluten free from scratch). So when I was looking for a quick getaway before returning back to med school for the summer I spotted Dee’s and the reviews, LET ME TELL YOU THEY DONT EVEN TAKE INTO ACOUNT HOW AMAZING THIS PLACE IS!!!! When you enter you’re hit with warm smiles and a welcome from everyone working even if they weren’t up front when you came in they still say hello!! They make you feel at home while you browse, help carry items to the register for you without you asking, alert you to anything that’s in the items without you asking, and do it with a smile and a lovely attitude!! This place is awesome all its missing is a tiny little space for seating. I was and still am truly amazed! Their blueberry vegan donut is TO DIE FOR!!! It had fresh blueberries in the middle with the most decedent glaze that’s not too sweet and overpowering, soft with a bite and just enough to fill you up with one!!!! Their lemon bars are delicious and remind me of the bottom and middle layers of lemon cake my mom used to make from scratch for me as a kid!!! This brought back memories and soothed my inner child to the core LOL!! The pumpkin coffee cake it mouth watering and has such a crisp outside that’s not too crispy and a soft center with a nice bite to it!! I also bought the manicotti for my sister-in-law who has been wanting to try this aswell and since she’s only a month out from having her baby she couldn’t come so I surprised her and grabbed her some carrot cake muffins, lemon raspberry donuts, and the manicotti!! AMAZING. Simply INCREDIBLE. My Fiancee and I are planning our wedding and we need gluten-free desserts to serve to our guests. We set up a tasting at Dee's One Smart Cookie with Shawna & Dee and we were simply blown away! I could write an entire review just to celebrate the massive selection of allergen-free options they provide (my gluten-free fiancee was floored at the variety of great items she typically can never enjoy), but I'll just focus this review on the outstanding customer service we received.

We asked if we could come in early for item pickup and without hesitation, we were accommodated and our items were ready and waiting for us. The items we ordered were delicious and they even threw in a dessert-sampler of lemon bars, chocolate mousse bites, chocolate covered strawberries, and raspberry oat bars for free for us to try. Very generous and greatly appreciated!

Shawna was fantastic and we felt extremely cared for, and that our visit was very personalized :) She was friendly, attentive, knowledgeable, and generally concerned with our overall experience. 10 out of 10.

Unexpectedly, on the way out the door, Dee asked us if we liked beef stew. It caught us off guard seeing that we were in a bakery, but she sent us home with two portions of homemade beef stew, along with gluten-free bread. I mean....talk about going above and beyond. I cant say enough...

UPDATE: My wife and I got married this past September at the Branford House and the desserts were incredible. Our taste testing was very fun and we had amazing personal care thanks to Dee and her team. A large portion of our wedding group had gluten intolerances and we were able to find amazingly delicious gluten-free options and to keep everyone happy. Bought a 6 in carrot cake for a b day and was told to leave the cake out at room temp for 2-3 hours before cutting. Did exactly that and the cake was very crumbly and the filling was hard. It was very hard to get cut a decent slice to serve without it falling apart. After serving out half the cake I laid the cake down in the box that in came in because the cake was too tall to close. They gave the cake to me in a box with the lid half open and a sheet of saran wrap taped to it to cover the open half. Before storing I saran wrapped the entire box. Next day I cut a piece through the middle and it was still crumbly with hard filling. I sent an email to the owner and she voicemailed me assuming I dropped the cake. I called back to try to explain exactly how I handled the cake and she interrupted me half way and didn’t let me fully explain. She issued me a refund but later sent me an email assuming I made a “comedy”(as she stated) of storing and cutting errors. She was very rude and had zero accountability for the matter. She made a plethora of assumptions about what happened without caring to hear me out.
