The Place — Restaurant in Glendale

I've gone by The Place many times over the years, but never actually ate there until recently. I just had an eye exam, my eyes were dilated so I stopped in to have a light breakfast to wait until my eyesight was more normal. I remember that The Place started out under a different name and motif. Either way it looks like the current operators hadn't changed a thing on the inside. Open,airy bright and comfortable. The former life of the building, built in a "log cabin lodge" style, surprised me by having an operating bar inside. I was seated quickly, and put in my standard order of a short stack of pancakes and a side of baconn with coffe. The coffee came quick , hot, freah and strong, but silky smooth. All it needed was one dollop of half and half and a bit if ice water to make it perfect. The place was just busy enough on this Friday morning that had to wait a little bit for my order but it was worth the wait. Most breakfast/ lunch establishments will cut corners where they can, but not The Place. The pancakes were double sized though maybe a bit thin, but the fantastic texture and creaminess and flavor so worth the wait. These were not out-of-the-box but Made From Scratch! They didn't come with a dallop of "yellow colored greasy stuff" but real butter and plenty of it. Real maple syrup not flavored corn syrup the was just wow! Besides the maple syrup there was a bottle of blueberry as well. Not my favorite but I tried a couple of spoonfuls, for science. Again real blueberry, not syrup, I would call more like a sauce. If it wasn't house made then it's the best you can buy delicious. I know that restaurants this size will run their bacon in batches in a convection oven, and that's alright, then put into a large serving pan and kept warm. The best ones will put a rack in the bottom to keep the bacon from getting to greasy. The Place is the best. Our waitress spent 5 to 10 minutes chatting at another table to a former employee. The waitress is very loud and could hear the whole conversation. Birthday this Monday! Delivered their food first (we had ordered prior along with the booth next to me who also received their orders after theirs). All tables table of two so no huge orders from any of the three tables. I didn't receive mine until 10 minutes after the "known" table. Only a part of our order came out, leaving my son without his meal and me to stare at mine until his came. The waitress of course returned to chit chat to the other table. 15 minutes later my sons meal finally came out (pancake, eggs, bacon). It wasn't until then that the waitress disclosed that his order was stolen by another waitress. She saw that i was upset and took my order off the bill and offered to remake it however my son already has his meal and we're there to eat together otherwise we'd be at different tables. I told her since she's already took my meal of the bill to take it. I don't do freebees. During the course of my sons meal she kept coming by the table and pressing the issue. These aren't conversations i want to have in front of my 7 year old son and clearly wasn't getting the hint. I would of talked to management while i was there but again had my son with me. Only a phone # on the website and open until 3pm.

The waitress offered to comp the whole meal but I insisted she not do that. I paid for my sons meal / drink. No tip of course. Very poor service. Infact the service wasn't even great and didn't pay much attention to the other tables (besides the known prior employee) until their was an issue with my order. If your staff is stealing plates from other tables then i would address that issue. It is possible that this waitress just forgot to put in part of the order and didn't acknowledge it till part of the order came out of the kitchen as well. Too much time talking...

This is The Place. There are many places like it but this one is mine...

Not as in I'm the owner but as in this is my new home spot when I feel like amazing food and want to be treated like a valued customer that is wanted and appreciated.

I'm going to start this one off with a shout out. Jimmy, your service was amazing. The food is great but YOU are the reason for the 5 stars and the repeat business and recommendations coming your way. You were kind, personable, fun, dedicated, outstanding and professional. All great traits but the last one is huge. The service industry has turned in to absolute garbage with these sad young people we have created in society. None of them seem to care let alone pay attention or actually do their job right. I wish you could train people for restraunts everywhere. You could change the world. Thank you for being you and showing that some people still care. When you add the quality and taste of the food to the experience I can see why The Place is such a legendary and famous Phoenix spot.

Come to think of it. Everyone that was working there Monday was amazing. From "welcome in" to "good morning", "have a good day" and "please and thank you", all of you made me feel like you were happy I was there. Thank you for that.

And last, you're the first spot that ever gave enough hollandaise sauce. Being a Benedict junkie you won my heart. Great job all...
