Babe's Tea Room — Restaurant in Golden

Always good to see something new coming into Golden. Babe’s is no exception.

Walking in you are greeted by a welcoming atmosphere as well as very pleasant and enthusiastic employees. There is plenty of seating inside as well as outside. My choice will always be outside. There is a wonderful view of the river and playground as well as the sidewalk right in front of you. High tops are awesome for 2 and the tables are great for groups of 4. And no matter where you sit outside there is plenty of shade for even the sunniest days, whether that be from umbrellas or trees. I would also like to mention the fun little tea timers and wonky ( at least for me ) honey dispensers. Very cool, definitely a +1 for me. Overall a wonderful space and a perfect location

As I mentioned before, the service is wonderful. I was there on what I believe to be opening day so I hope this continues to be true. I had never been to a ‘tea house’ and really didn’t know the ins and outs of how the whole thing worked. My server Darby was there to answer all my questions and made sure that I was taken care of. Along with that the speed of service was amazing. Going in knowing it was the first-ish day I was expecting hiccups. No expectation of perfection, but that’s what I received. Water always filled, orders came out fast, absolutely amazing.

Now the most important part, the food and tea. Considering there is 75+ different teas by my count, there will be something for everyone. It will take me a lifetime to try all of them. I had the sweet watermelon oolong. Very good. Maybe a little sweet for me but it’s in the name so 🤷‍♂️. Along with that I had the peach scones. Also very good. I had 3 mini scones and that was more than enough for me. Definitely enough to share. Same with the pot of tea. I got about 3 cups of tea out of the pot. So again definitely enough to share. So the food and tea was good but what about the value for money? I was surprised when my bill came and it was only about $12. In today’s world I was expecting more to be honest. Value for one person definitely ok, but if you were there with 2 or 3 people I’d say you could get a pretty decent value for your money. I didn’t order any of the sandwiches or other larger meals/non-snack items so I can’t comment on those yet but over all good value and good food with an amazing variety of tea.

As I get more chances to try more things and come back more I’ll make sure to update this review. For now tho on opening day, easy to recommend Babe’s tea room. Just passing through and need a nice relaxing bite, definitely recommend. Live in the area and want a new place to gather with some friends, also recommend for you too.

Though the food and tea were amazing, the way the restaurant is set up is not. I had a party of 5, and 3 of us were gluten free. This is something they accommodate, and when we made the reservation, we selected ahead of time 3 gluten free teas and 2 regular. Because there was a section to specify, I didn't think I'd have to call.

But when we get there (for our reservation at 2:45) they ask if there are any dietary needs. We say we have our 3 gluten free needs, and that's that. We order some delicious tea and catch up, but when 3:30 comes by (45 minutes after our reservation time) and there isn't food, we're a bit concerned. Our waitress assures us that the gluten free scones are in the oven and should be out soon. At this point I was slightly peeved because we did tell them ahead of time of our needs, and usually you want your food WITH your tea for afternoon tea, but it's ok, it happens.

But then 3:45 hits and we still haven't received our food (mind you, this is an hour after our reservation time and the reservation is only supposed to be for 90 minutes). Our waitress lets us know that the kitchen team actually missed our ticket, but it's in now. It might be a bit, but she will give us a discount for the wait. We do finally get our food at 4:08 pm (I know because I have a timestamped photo). However, one of our friends had to take hers to go because she head to head out at 4:20 (something we thought would be fine because that's when our 90 minute reservation was supposed to end!). It is lovely, the food was great, and we did have a nice time.

Luckily most of our party didn't have a time constraint. But when the bill came out, they gave us 10% off. And yes, this is better than nothing, I do appreciate the acknowledgment of the mistake, but when each meal is $57 and we're here for a birthday celebration, I want to have service fitting the occasion and the price tag. We love Babes downtown Denver location but they have a huge learning curve in Golden. We went on the first day open and didn’t have a great experience. I figured that since they had another location they would be ready to go. It took 30 mins to just get a tea menu. When we ordered tea they came back saying that kind wasn’t available. We decided on another type and it took another 15-20 mins for the tea to arrive and it was barely hot. They said that the hot water machine was being repaired and they didn’t realize it still wasn’t working. I decided I would just go the Chai Latte route instead and it tasted very unfamiliar and I’m not sure was even chai. That also took a very long time and arrived after our food. At this point we had been sitting at our table for over an hour with no tea. I ordered the salmon BLT and it was very difficult to eat and the bread was very wet on the bottom. I couldn’t finish it and had to pick at what I could with a fork. My friend ordered the scone sandwich which crumbled apart and was also challenging to eat. They did comp our tea which I appreciated but they really didn’t check on us and make sure the food was good. We were there from 10:45 to almost 1:00 because everything took so long. I want to be hopeful but this is Golden they are going to have to step it up and handle the mass of people that will line up to get in.
