I have always loved this shop. We've had all our cakes and cupcakes made here since we first moved to Michigan years ago. Back then I was looking for a high quality gluten free cakes and was so impressed that I never went anywhere else.
One of the things that I particularly loved was being able to call them up with cake specs and a general theme (in the past examples of themes have been gaming, puppies, etc for my kids' cakes) and they would make something great. Just one masterpiece after another.
I did the same thing recently. I called them up a few days before the event and asked if they could make a cake. They couldn't in that amount of time. Fair enough, so I moved the event to a week later when they said they could have the cake done.
I asked for a "bakery" theme and honestly I didn't care what it looked like. They could have done an outline of a mixing spoon with "Happy birthday" on it and I would have been over the moon. I verbalized this on the phone to the person taking the order. I said "I don't care what it looks like; you guys always do a good job; literally anything is fine." The employee asked that I email a photo for inspiration. I said I would try to do that asap, but that honestly anything is fine.
I went through the entire ordering process. They had all my contact information. No one ever said anything about prepaying.
After I got off the phone I proceeded to have one of the worst weeks of my life. The bakery is obviously not at fault for this, but what it meant was that I completely forgot to send the email.
When I went to the bakery to pick it up and they simply hadn't made it at all!
They said that it was my fault for not prepaying and not sending the email. Sending the email is completely on me, but not prepaying is completely on them. I had said many times over "literally anything is fine." The worker offered to "whip something up real quick" for me and I just thought to myself "why couldn't you have done that a week ago when I originally wanted the cake? That's what I literally asked you to do in so many words."
No call, no follow up, no cake....

Context for this statement:
I have gotten a cake for my wife's birthday here for the last three years. The first year, I was not prepared at all to provide an adequate dessert for my betrothed, and I called them up and asked for help to get me out of a situation created only by my procrastination. As the night continued to unfold, work pulled me away, and I missed my wife's birthday dinner. The cake they had made for me was the redeeming highlight of that night.
Since then, each cake I have asked them to execute a seemingly more abstract and confusing vision to which they have upped the bar each time. These cakes are not inexpensive, and that is because of the level of artistry and skill that goes into making them. It is not uncommon to have a great tasting cake or a great looking cake, but the team there has performed at a level making them no less than masters at their trades.
These people know what they are doing, and you should ask them for their expertise, and let them do what they do best. It is clear that being a great bakery is what their goal is, and they have achieved that goal very well.
If you want help representing yourself, a love one, or an important date through a bespoke, high quality, and impressive dessert, this is absolutely the best place I have found to achieve that goal.
To that end, our latest creation represents a dead president walking a dog, and we cannot be happier with the result. As strange as that may sound, the fact that this team can pull off making an entire room of people laugh and smile with that is nothing less than incredible.
Thank you for the fond memories, and I am excited to see what we can come up...
Read moreI had went in October 2020 for cake tasting in the Grand Rapids area - for my April 9th 2021 wedding in Shelbyville, as home for us is Macomb County, MI! I visited 3 local bakeries and Sara’s Sweets BLEW the other two outof the water! Not only on packaging and presentation, but on taste and options/flavors as well! It was super easy to stop in and grab our to go sampling’s and we took them all back to our hotel room at our venue (Bay Pointe Inn/Woods) to try them all! My mom and I couldn’t stop eating the peanut butter filling and frosting! I reached out in November and booked with Tracey for a 3 tier wedding cake yellow cake with buttercream frosting - with two layers frosted the same and one messy! Also, I ordered 5 dozen cupcakes! 2 dozen Reese’s, 1 Chocolate cake w/ chocolate whip filling, 1 Strawberry cake with cream cheese, & 1 gluten free mixed dozen! Due to another vendor (not bakery) giving me the run around, around March I checked back in to verify we were still all set! The process and communication was flawless! Sara’s Sweets delivered to our venue the day of, charging not much of a delivery fee! Saved so much time and stress knowing they were dropping off the day of! I’m here to say the only bad part was - ORDER MORE CUPCAKES! Holy moly were they a hit - I still can’t believe how fast they were! If the lovely staff didn’t save me one in the cabin - I wouldn’t have even had one haha! The cake went over very well as well! We were able to save our top but will most likely order a fresh one on our one year - due to already wanting to go back! So many great reviews and friends and family raving on the cake and cupcakes! I couldn’t be happier with the turn out! I highly recommend Sara’s Sweets and am very happy they are we chose for our...
