Tried Mission BBQ in Grand Rapids and the brisket alone is worth the trip 🤤🔥 #bbq #foodreview

Well there’s a lot to be desired with our service and food. We went here on Nov. 13 @ 530. I’ll start with the 2 people who were at the register. The one taking our order had changed some items “to a combo” which means smaller sides. We had order regular sides as there were 6 of us so when we received the single serving of green beans and Cole slaw we were obviously confused. We did end up getting a full side serving of green beans however it had too much sodium and we didn’t eat it. I had noticed the Thanksgiving special they were doing. I asked about it, he looked at the sign by the register and said “it’s a special we are doing in 8 days”. I had pointed out to him that it says 8 orders left and nothing to do with days. He seemed clueless so asked the other guy at the register who didn’t know what this thanksgiving day special was about. Moving onto the food, in general it was ok. We ordered 1lb of pulled pork, 1/2 lb of chicken, 1/2 brisket, and 3 ribs, green beans, coleslaw, and fries. The green beans and the Memphis belle sauce at the table had way too much sodium. So much sodium the green beans were inedible, I can’t repeat this enough, too much sodium. The meat didn’t really taste fantastic. You could get the same meat at any general bbq place. My husband asked if there was a military discount and the cashier said no but he would give us a cobbler. We didn’t get the cobbler because when we picked up the food we were told there’s no free cobbler for military discounts. We drove 20 minutes to eat at this restaurant because of the reviews and we are left wondering how people are giving 5 stars. Sharing the thanksgiving sign at the door as I didn’t get a pic of the one at the register.

This place is by far the best BBQ place ever! Military themed and extremely military supportive- this shows throughout restaurant. Extremely friendly employees- THEY GO THE EXTRA MILE! You get a very welcome hello when entering! Your order is then at the register, menu on back wall. Find a seat (always clean tables!) and wait for your name to be called. Doesn’t take long for this deliciousness to get prepared. While you wait, enjoy the neat stickers and memorabilia around the restaurant. Incredible menu selection! Brisket, chicken, sausage, pork, turkey, salmon, Romano of ribs, rotating meats like prime rib and sirlion- even a cheeseburger! Salads available. Kids menu is just the same amazing food but slightly smaller portions. Portions are generous. Always hot, fresh, and delicious! They have an assortment of beverages, both bottles and fountain. Fresh brewed sweet and unsweet tea as well as lemonade. Rotating desserts on menu as well. Many sides to choose from -Mac and cheese, baked beans with brisket, and fresh cut fries to name a few. Did I mention they have a 6 pack of their original sauces on each table (which are all unique and a must try!) They also have an amazing mustard that pairs nice with the jalapeño cheddar sausage. Cornbread included, it’s 10/10. Most days there is a really cool military vehicle parked out front. TRY THIS PLACE YOU WILL NOT REGRET!!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

I REALLY want to like this place!! Great cause, great opportunity. Brendan is awesome and so helpful. My first visit i had the chicken wings they were absolutely on point!! I came back the first chance I had which was probably 7 months later and they wouldn't sell me chicken wings because it wasn't the super bowl. I was dumbfounded. The girl working cash register wasn't any help and couldn't answer my question, why? All she said is they were only selling them on the Super Bowl, which happened to be the next day. I was out of town on the SB so I couldn't get them. I went back yesterday, hoping to get some chicken wings. NOPE, they dont sell them...only on the Super Bowl. Ok. I get it, as an owner you get to choose what you do...but why not sell chicken wings? Why not make it completely obvious to me when I am there that I can only get them on SB Sunday? So I ordered the black plate special which was a garlic steak. I am certain it was the $5 GFS special. Thin. Dry. Tough. Not impressed at all. I also had two of my children with me and they both ordered the kids Mac n cheese. Smallest portion of Mac n cheese I have ever seen, but the fry portion was adequate. So, im not impressed so far, thus the 3 star....but I also haven't had true BBQ yet...so I am going to try 1 more time and if the brisket/pork/sausage change my opinion, I'll adjust my rating. As for the staff...not impressed other...
