I don't review many places because i don't like letting what i personally feel that's negative be something some else takes too literal. But here we are with Koi Ramen.
Food: I rarely take my daughter to places for an initial review, but i wanted to try it and spend time with her. She's a picky eater and she loved her Kid's Chicken Katsu. Just like the other place, Koi Poke and Ramen, the ramen here that i had is just as delicious. The addition of being able to order sake with a meal is a HUGE plus for me especially with a very decent selection. I ordered the Sakuza Junmai Ginjo with my meal and, as a sake fan, it definitely hit the spot for me. It wasn't until i turned over the adult drink menu that i realized there was even more choices, some of which i plan to return to try. My daughter being 5 ordered the blueberry lemonade and she loved it.
Service: I absolutely loved it. Now, I'm one of those people who hates it when a server is up my rear. Given i went when there was only us, and 2 couples/coworkers, not having them overly pester me was awesome. Unlike Koi Poke and Ramen, it is actual service with servers at this location.
Atmosphere: Now this one is a hard one to actually score high for me. I am a veteran with PTSD so for me to be in an atmosphere that is calming and not gonna have me constantly checking over my shoulder even when my back is to the majority of the place, is something exceptionally rare. It gave off a calm and traditional japanese restaurant vibe that soothed every part of me.
I definitely plan to return and try more of the menu, but today's visit i craved ramen. This will most likely become a regular...
Read moreI've been waiting for the Mason Street Koi to open for quite a while, and my first visit when they did open was everything I was hoping for!
I was with my partner who has a severe shrimp allergy - our server was knowledgeable about the menu and ingredients and easily directed us to which dishes would be safe to order for them. The restaurant is clean and well kept so we had little fear of cross contamination.
The ramen itself - magnificent! The noodles have a lovely chew, the marinated eggs are flavorful, soft-yolked and have a lovely aftertaste of the star anise used. I added the agedashi that was silky and creamy. I had the tonkatsu spicy, and my partner had the shoyu - both were as described and full of delicious toppings.
We also ordered the yakitori for my partner and the golden spider (fried softshell crab) for myself - both were prepared fresh and were delicious. The softshell was some of ht best I have had since I moved to Wisconsin!
The interior is youthful and bright with anime and chibi references in the decor without being cluttered and overdone. And their selection of sake is fun and I am looking forward to trying a new selection each time I go!
For those folks who don't understand why someone would go out and buy ramen when you can get a packet for 50 cents - it's the same thing as going to a nice steak house for a steak instead of the frozen, saline injected steak you might get at the dollar store. If you want your ramen to be cheap dry and contain a flavor packet, you're...
Read moreMy friend and I decided to pick a new restaurant, to us. We went to Koi Ramen on West Mason. We got there at 11 am. on the nose! We were ready to see what delicious food we were going to enjoy today. There are so many different menus, so many choices. I wanted to try one in each category! We started with the Gyoza appetizer. They were tender dumplings with a bit of crunchy and really delicious. Next up was our entrees.. Pork Chashu Bowl -- Chopped up well marinated pork on top of rice with seaweed and a bowl of miso. Miso Ramen -- Miso broth, pork belly, bean sprouts, bok choy, scallions, and marinated egg. The food was served in a beautiful large bowl. Definitely got generous servings of food. Dessert -- Sesame balls with red bean paste. I'm pretty sure they were made to order because they were super crunchy, chewy, and heck of a hot! The absolute best way to enjoy these. I also couldn't leave without one of the Boba drinks. It's one of my weaknesses other than Sesame balls. I chose the Milk Green Tea. It was the perfect way to end this yummy meal. It wasn't overly sweet. Bob was our server today. He was absolutely fantastic! He took the time to explain the foods we had questions about, helped us make delicious decisions, and he made sure we had everything we needed. Nice place for good food in a comfortable setting to enjoy spending time with friends or family. I'm definitely coming back because there are so many other dishes I want to try. They have take...
