As a board certified Foodie, I am often reading restaurant reviews, scanning newspaper articles, visiting websites and blogs, and exchanging e-mails and messages with other foodies - looking for the new places, the new dishes, the emerging cuisines, and the leading food trends. The downside of spending so much time and effort finding the new is that you often neglect the absolute gems that started you down the path to appreciating great food, whatever the style, no matter how humble.
This cafe is one of those gems - one that has been around for quite a while, had some ups & downs & some changes, but currently serves up country cooking favorites that are as good as any you'll find in Greensboro. And that food is served up by some of the friendliest, most engaging restaurant folk you'll encounter. This place is not much to look at, but if you come here to look, you're already off task.
They offer 4 Daily Special choices (generally priced at $8.29 including beverage) and they cover all the country cooking favorites: Chicken or Turkey Pot Pie, Chopped Sirloin, Fried Chicken, Pork Chops, CS Steak, Spaghetti, Fried Fish, Meat Loaf, Salmon Cakes, Roast Turkey, and even Chicken Fried Steak with authentic White Gravy, and More. Remember Friday is Fish Day!
The sides also cover the country cooking spectrum, though in my opinion the sides don't rise to the same level as the entrees in most cases, and this seem to me to be due to seasoning, rather than a quality problem - a few healthy grinds of salt and pepper makes a huge difference. And the Fried Corn Bread is a must.
We had the Chicken Fried Steak with White Gravy, Mashed Potatoes (they're real), and Collards & the Roast Turkey with Dressing, Whole Berry Cranberry Sauce, Fried Okra, & Field Peas. The Chicken Fried Steak is awesome - nice quality meat, well battered, well seasoned, nicely cooked, and then SMOTHERED in some of the very best White Gravy you'll find outside of Tejas!
The Roast Turkey is cooked in house using top quality, whole turkey breast - no pressed meat here! The gravy is very nice (& not that strange YELLOW colored stuff you often run into), and the dressing is also prepared in house - you can taste the fresh celery & onion - excellent! Other than the real mashed potatoes, the sides were simply average, though the corn bread rocks! And the Whole Berry Cranberry Sauce (they used the canned Ocean Spray) is great.
They serve breakfast, offer the usual variety of diner sandwiches (burger is good, pass on the hot dog, try the Fried Bologna), a couple of soup choices (Bean & Bacon is excellent), and a few menu entree regulars (Chicken Tenders, etc). But this place is about traditional country cooking favorites - and they color outside the lines when it comes to diet and health concerns - and if you chose to come here, you should too. And bring cash, no credit...

🍳🥞The Colluseum Cafe is probably my favorite place in Greensboro to eat. If we can get there before 11Am, they serve the most delicious breakfast! Eggs, bacon (or sausage or pork chops or steak or bologna), home fries and toast- yummy!! And SO AFFORDABLE! Honestly, the breakfast here is cheaper than McDonalds or most other fast food places .
🍱🥤After 11? The lunch menu is different every day. Although they do have a daily same food items listed on the back of the menu- I Love that they serve different items all the time. The food is wonderful and cooked when you order. I can go in and get a very nice sized main entree, 2 sides, a bread and even a DRINK for less than $10!!! Now tell me, where else can I do this at?? And- Home cooked?!?
⭐Sometimes they're short staffed, but the 2 main waitress(es) are awesome!! Love y'all!!
💜Thanks for giving me and my aunt a nice place to eat, with great food and a friendly atmosphere!!

Read moreWent to try this place yesterday. The staff was rude and didn't acknowledge my friend and I when we got there. We sat at a table and the staff ignored us for several minutes. Finally one waitress came and threw silverware on the table. No menu was given I had to get one off another table. Finally the lady took our order. We got the fried chicken and meatloaf. Meatloaf looked like it was scooped onto plate by hand. Mashed potatoes had no flavor. As I went to try meatloaf a roach ran across the counter. Gross. We got up to show staff the roach they didn't care and went back to cooking. Didn't address bug issue. Needless to say we didn't stay. Waitress said since you didn't eat much don't have to pay. Ya think! We wanted to try this place because we heard it was great. I don't know what others see in this place or how it's in business. But I Will never go again. If I could give a negative star...
