My children were invited to their friends 12th birthday at Rancherita in Greenville. My children were guests of the host family’s 12yr old. We arrived late because host family needed to change venue-we arrived at original venue. I arrived last at Rancherita (Greenville) with my 2 children after 3pm. So being that my children were guests I by default accompanying being their parent and driver. The host family already set up, with other seated guests had the cake, favors and is greeting us and speaking to already present guests established their presence as host family. How can 0ne of my two children, learning how to order, learning social skills, be charged “Large Party (18%) $9” when we are neither the host family nor cohost. And my child was using recently accumulated birthday & Christmas gift monies to eat and further our server additionally kept my elder child’s large coin amount change. Seemingly server JH seemed he was gonna keep all the change if I didn’t stay aware teaching my children.
Children are customers too and have things they save up for essentially accounting everything with stewardship effort. “Pandemic” transactions are over—where the change of adult/aware customers was kept because of cash/change shortages.
I placed no order because I couldn’t having earlier the week help paid household bills also my younger child didn’t order because had changed their mind getting frustrated with a touch of stubborn learning how to order and speak up in loud sound. So other things happened that were important but my main grievances were server JH however long he has been a server hustled my child out of “ Large Party (18%) $9 “. I was teaching my children about gratitude and tips before the asked for the check. I also tried to connect with JH saying I know it is tough and how I used to be a server.
I had the expectation of the customer choosing a basic gratuity with choices in graduation up to exceptional service gratuity by customer choice. There are places that have set amount. It was a party of about 18 people on this event. 9 were children of them were 2 were toddlers. So if JH skimmed change from those of the 8 adults who had cash and did “Large party (18%) $9.00” additionally for each of 8 adults present that is a fleecing, theft, immoral, gross misunderstanding of ethics. With tax my 12 year old, a guest not host, tab with tax before gratuity should have been $53.49. My child tab with tax and non disclosed gratuity $62.48. ?!?!?!?! So 15% would be $7.89 but we saw no signage nothing printed on menu and were never given access to the JH transaction/order machine. We don’t eat out like that for budget reasons. But I want my children to have a life and enjoy and accept invitations and it was their money not mine. Yes. My elder child ordered and didn’t ask/verify prices which was a teaching moment I addressed children. It was our first time doing business at Rancherita too. I just want the server to not skim people change without consent no matter their age or perceptions and their be a sign on door, table, etc giving gratuity choices and gratuity policies/standards.
Economic challenges vary but be respectful. Maybe we looked rich idk smh. My child felt awkward after having received the meal in observation of the other children observing the order and did invite me and their sibling to eat some. I ate only 2 wings a small pinch of broken fries and few complimentary chips with salsa and my glass of water. Bottom line issue is Disclosure. Signage. JH Don’t skim customer change padding your gratuity from any customer. Ethics being taught to crew to deter Public embezzlement a form of Stealing. I talked to my child and it decided to not get the money back and we prayed for server and spoke abbreviated the issue and blessing to JH and I asked for General Manager or Asst. Manager. I wanted to make him aware of my concern of server ethics. Especially it not being my money but my child’s. Small things...
Read moreI recently had the unfortunate experience of dining at Mixcan Restaurant La Rancherita Grill, and I must say it was a complete disappointment. As someone who has spent time in both Mexico and Texas, I consider myself well-acquainted with authentic Mexican cuisine, and this restaurant fell far short of any reasonable expectations.
First and foremost, the prices at La Rancherita Grill are exorbitant for the subpar quality of food they serve. I moved to Greenville from Texas with a craving for some good Mexican food, and after reading supposedly positive reviews online, I decided to give this place a try. Little did I know, it would be a decision I would come to regret.
Upon arriving, I attempted to order fajitas, a staple in Mexican cuisine, only to be told that they don't serve fajitas. I was flabbergasted – how can a Mexican restaurant not offer fajitas? It set a bad tone for the meal right from the start. Frustrated, I settled for two beef tacos, which were a joke. These so-called "tacos" were no bigger than three inches, more like mini tacos, but not in the good way. The meat was riddled with fat and gristle, making them nearly inedible. To add insult to injury, they didn't come with the traditional sides you'd expect, like beans, rice, onion salad, cilantro, or hot salsa. This was nothing like the authentic Mexican tacos I was accustomed to.
My wife ordered chicken enchiladas, and what arrived at our table was a sad excuse for a Mexican enchilada plate. There were no garnishes like lettuce, cilantro, cheese, or even a hint of gravy. Instead, we got a meager portion of green sauce and three random pieces of plantain banana – something you might find in a Cuban dish, not a Mexican one. My wife attempted to eat it, but it was clear that the dish was subpar at best.
To make matters worse, the bill for one plate of enchiladas, two tiny tacos, and no drinks came to over $30. For such an astronomical price, I expected quality, but what we got was a grave disappointment.
Having lived in Guadalajara, Mexico, and Texas, where Mexican cuisine is revered and cherished, I have never encountered such an underwhelming dining experience with such a high price tag. This was my first and last visit to Mixcan Restaurant La Rancherita Grill. If you're in Greenville and looking for authentic Mexican food, do yourself a favor and look elsewhere – you won't...

I had high hopes for La Rancherita Grill & Tequila Bar. The photos looked amazing and the reviews were promising, so I decided to take my family there while we were traveling to Myrtle Beach. Unfortunately, while the food itself was fantastic, the service and billing experience left a bad taste that overshadowed everything else.
We ordered a variety of dishes—fried shrimp for the kids, ceviche and tacos for myself, and my wife originally wanted the fried fish. She also ordered a mojito that was on special, and I planned to enjoy an $18 beer bucket that was listed on the menu. Sounds like a good time, right? Well, not quite.
The waiter first said I couldn’t get the beer bucket because it was for sharing. I told him I was planning to share it with my wife. He agreed, but then came back again and said it had to be shared with three people—something that was nowhere on the menu. I said fine, just bring the beers one at a time. No big deal—just a weird misunderstanding, I thought.
Then, the waiter came back again to tell us they didn’t have the fried fish we ordered for my wife. Again, we rolled with it and changed the order—still trying to relax and enjoy ourselves. The food finally came out, and I’ll say it again: the food was genuinely excellent. The waiter was friendly too, which made the next part even more disappointing.
As we were finishing up, I overheard a couple behind us complaining about their bill and asking for a printed receipt. I didn’t think much of it until I asked for my own check. The waiter just came over and said the total was over $150—but didn’t show me the bill. That raised a red flag. I asked to see the actual itemized check, and sure enough, they had tried to charge us $29 for the fried fish we never got and charged full price for the mojito that was supposed to be discounted.
It felt like they were hoping we wouldn’t notice, or that we’d just pay blindly without checking. That’s not just careless—it’s shady.
Bottom line: the food is great, but the experience was soured by shady billing practices and poor communication. I really wanted to love this place, but I can’t recommend it until they clean up how they handle customer service and billing....
