Y'all know my blood type is Duke's Mayonnaise, so when they announced #hottomatosummer would be featured exclusively in Richmond and #GVL, I had to find out where to try their hot tomato pie recipe. The Bohemian Cafe was that place (thanks to The Pickens Foodie). I also wanted to try more of their flair for brunch.
The deluxe mimosa comes with champagne and orange juice; the "deluxe" part is the added pineapple and pomegranate juice. A rim of cane sugar, or mixed in it, would've helped the bitter edge in the pomegranate and Florida orange juice. However, I prefer a sweeter palate in a mixed drink, so it's suited for more "experienced casual drinkers" than me. 😅 It might be perfect to you!
The sweet potato fries were a bit overdone and over sea salted, yet my pimento cheese BLT was incredible. The Duke's really played up the savory of the tomato and bacon, which leads us to the star of the show... That ✨hot 🍅 tomato 🥧 pie ✨ action! 💣
It has such a full bodied suckerpunch of savory, I had our server Faith ask the kitchen to make sure there wasn't any pork or beef in it. The rosemary was heavy to my husband, but for me it was Goldilocks. 🤌 It gave it that garden-y richness, that slight waft of scent from the tomato stem still left on your hands after plucking the tomato straight from the garden, still warm from the summer sun and ready to slice onto some mayo'd-up 🍞 bread.
He had the Taos Breakfast Burrito, filled with homemade chorizo (oh MAN it was stellar!), cheese, chilies, onions, and home fries with "provocative cheese sauce". Y'all: 🚨 it was queso! 🚨 You could get grits as a side, but hashbrowns were offered, and if you know my husband, his blood type is ketchup for all the potato he consumes. 🥔💚 He says it took him back to childhood. His Nan would slightly overcook home fries, creating something between hashbrowns and mashed potatoes. It gave him a warm, nostalgic experience; just like the tomato pie gave me.
Due to injury, he can't "eat like he used to", and sometimes I can't either, so we had a very hefty to-go box to bring home... And another slice of hot tomato pie destined for an air fryer reheating later. 🤩🌠🍅
Also, this post got kinda long, but shout-out to our hostess for getting us some cushions from the outside seating to accommodate the very hard chair for Brady. It really means a lot, especially on a first visit at an establishment, to eagerly assist any comfort needs a customer may require without feeling any compulsion to have to explain why. I still said he's recovering from an injury, but she didn't pry, or offer any fake concern, but thanked US for asking for help and empathized that they can be uncomfortable chairs pretty fast.
The lunch was really special for me, paid for in part by one of our friends, and its somewhere Brady had wanted to visit since 10th grade.
I hope all of y'all are having a wonderful and blessed #hottomatosummer 😘 don't...
Read moreBloody Mary Bar at brunch is great, but bring and ice filled glass with a small amount of vodka. Looks like more with ice, which has begun to melt by time you get glass they are so busy. The selections at the bar are AMAZING! Really top notch and varied. But... Set up in way to small of an area, people were literally knocking things over it was so crammed and it is located at a tight turn spot of restaurant so there is not really any where to stand in line while you wait your turn. Only one person can pass through at a time. So people waiting essentially play dodge the patrons and servers. I spent years in food & beverage in Charleston. The Bohemian needs to take a cue from the South's brunch capital. Bring glass with vodka only, have bar set up at a table, on both sides, people can come through either direction and have a container of ice with scoop so drink is not watered down before you start. A lot of people prefer "lite ice" when I tended bar for that very reason. It's a small restaurant with good food, but staff is not trained to handle a full capacity seating precisely at 11 as a line forms early. Managers and servers alike were running like crazy, all tables around us, and ours were getting food mixed up and bills mixed up. Decide what you want to be, the eclectic, little eatery with great food and good concept of bloody bar or figure out how the big boys pull it off smoothly in even smaller sites and do it really well. Suggestion, make the change to the bloody bar, centralize it, require reservations at opening and stagger seating at no mote than 4-6 tables every 15 minutes until capacity is reached. That way staff front and back of house can accommodate flow of guests effectively and efficiently. The place will be packed in under an hour and each table will be able to get you at your best than every seat filled in 10 minutes and every employee is flailing about. You'll make more money (no less than 5 items were comped due to mix ups and delays at our and table surrounding) and people will leave full and happy instead...
Read moreWent to brunch here for the first time the other day. I was REALLY impressed with their prices and even more impressed with the taste of my food. I had the pimento cheese burger... When I tell you it is delicious that's a complete understatement lol. Also, their fries are out-of-this-world-good. We also had a piece of the triple chocolate cake. This stuff should be illegal it's so good. The ganache was perfection. Where my problem lies is with the service. If the woman had not been so damn nice I would've left 1 star. There was no guac on my friend's burger, which she specifically asked for again when it came out without it, and she never received that ..My daughter asked for a refill on Sprite, twice, and it never happened. Since the burger we were sharing has a kick,I had to go up to the bar and just bring the glass and ask for a refill. I asked for ice for my tea, twice, before I was able to get that when I went up to get the sprite. It wasn't just how many times we would ask, it was the fact that we just say rarely saw her to even be able to grab her attention. It was honestly kind of frustrating. I travel for work and I eat at some great restaurants. And by that I mean the whole experience, not price. This restaurant has all the makings of a 5 star experience.... But the customer-service is really lacking. I'm not sure if they are understaffed, or just not properly motivated/trained. I adore a great personality, but it also has to be mixed in with me getting the stuff I'm paying for. I'll still come back, for sure! Maybe it was a one-off experience. The food is too good not to come back,...
