An excellent regional history museum. It is clean and well organized. Well presented exhibits and acknowledgement of the native people to the area and the complicated relationship with the European settlers. Frank look at the African American experience and slavery.

The Piedmont Blues area of the permanent exhibit is a hidden gem of information. It is such a well done highlight of the area’s music history and local greats. It’d be nice to see some of the albums of those artists for sale in the gift shop, like Mac Arnold. Highly recommend all his albums. I’m presently savoring each track of Backbone and Gristle. A track on which Arnold explains his gas can guitar history and plays the song on one. Amazing.

A temporary exhibit on climate change was eye opening. There were hands on aspects to it and ways to see how we impact the environment. Another element of the exhibit was an informative student documentary about the native peoples of Alaska, and the climate impact on their communities.

One other exhibit highlighted Alice in Wonderland. There were set design models, wardrobe pieces, and a look at some original illustrations from the original work by Carroll. One could compare these to those of the recently passed artist Daniel Santore, who’s work I personally love. There are some other artists’ interpretations of the fable. Well curated.

An item of note, the cobblestones that make up the walk outside were the historic ones moved form...

The museum is mainly re-created posters/pictures and printed information for you to read. There aren't many primary source artifacts. One whole room/exhibit was closed, but no accommodations in price for that. We were told when we came in the door that they closed at 5:00, which was not a problem because we knew that before we went in and made sure to watch our time. The museum is small, and doable in that amount of time. However, my son had spotted a souvenir in the gift shop when we entered the museum and we went back at 4:53 to buy the souvenir on our way out (so that we would not have had to carry it through the museum if we bought it when we first got there), and we were told by the front desk "greeter" lady that she had already "closed out her drawer" so we couldn't make a gift shop purchase. This is one of my main reasons (along with the fact that the museum is just "eeh' when compared to other museums we have been to) for my 3 star rating (which really teeters on a 2...

Not worth the money for what little exhibits they have. We only went for the Star Wars exhibit and it was small. I thought it would be a little bit bigger. Once upon entering, the lady at the front didn't greet us and immediately fussed at my husband for his cup that he was trying to find a trash can to throw it away. And he try to explain that and still she was like you can't have it in the museum... well if she would listen to what he was trying to say, he was trying to find a trash can to throw it away. But just instead wanted to be kinda rude about it and not listen. Then beware if you have like a kavu bag you better not have it on your back it has to be in the front of your body. Overall just don't waste your money there. We have been to better and cheaper museum in NC than this one, with much...

This was my first time visiting the Upcountry History Museum. It's easy to find and has a nice open free parking lot adjacent to the building. The museum interior has two levels with a staircase in the center and an elevator if you wish. The exhibits at the time of our visit included "A Very Grinchy Christmas," which was a display of 150 original animation cells from the 1966 made for television special, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." Also, "The Military Photographs of Stacy Pearsall & The Veteran's Portrait Project." Other exhibits show history of the area with lots of interesting interactive elements, video and audio elements, mannequins, and recreations of buildings, equipment, and more. There is of course a gift shop as well.
