Disappointing & wildly expensive
The good I love local businesses and was very excited to hear about and dine at Homage. The service was attentive. Unfortunately, that's all I have good to say.
The bad I was expecting wonderful food and had very high hopes, especially given the idea is to "pay homage" to the cuisine of Charleston. As I'm sure many people in town have been to Charleston, they will be very disappointed to pay Charleston prices for food that should never be compared with Charleston food. The portions were very small and uninspiring. Two dishes in particular stand out. First, the crabcake. I'm not sure how you can butcher a staple like that, but I had a wildly superior crabcake from a food truck in Charleston. It was dry with strange flavors, and the crab didn't seem fresh. Second was (I believe) an attempt at an old Dap House recipe, the Korean Bulgogi Fries. Quite literally the dish was McDonald's quality fries topped with cheap queso, some almost flavorless beef, and a mild pico de gallo for $16. I wish I was making this up, but it was one of the most disappointing dishes I've ever eaten. My wife and I spent over $100 and didn't even get drinks. Unfortunately, we will not be returning.
The ugly Some small but novel points. Homage took over Dap House's google profile, so the reviews and rating are misleading. I think that's amateurish at best and misleading at worst. It's a bad look to ride on the coattails of a very good restaurant we all miss. Also, the menu has "Israeli couscous". Couscous is a north African dish.
A hopeful note I didn't write this to just gripe and complain. I genuinely want our local businesses to succeed and offer good experiences for locals and visitors alike. I hope Homage improves the quality of their offerings at a much more Greenville price....
Read moreMy friend and I tried Homage for the first time this weekend. We were very excited as we loved DAP house and heard great things from the soft opening.
The good: the drinks were good and came in a timely manner. The spirit list was extensive and the owner ensured us that more speciality/house cocktails were otw soon. The deviled eggs were great! No notes. The owner greeted us warmly and was so sweet!
The bad: as soon as we walked in, we noticed a smell of stagnant water/sewage. The smell lingered through the meal and got worse as you noticed it. The fig appetizer was lackluster and had little to no flavor. The puff pastry was doughy and hard to chew. The oysters were very underwhelming for the price ($24 for a half dozen). They were shucked poorly and 4/6 had broken shells in the bite. Although visually appealing, seating was awkward and uncomfortable. The table was much too small and was set right behind the host stand.
After giving the appetizers a shot, we decided against ordering entrees. Menu items weren’t exciting and we didn’t want to settle, especially with a $40+ price point.
When checking reviews to see if others had similar experiences, it seems that homage has “taken over” reviews from DAP house, despite opening last week.
In summary, we left early to go to eat at Ford and Shep. The possibility of returning is up to rotating menus that spark more interest and the hope of working through the atmospheric issues...
Read moreSuper disappointed. When we arrive for our reservation, was told the table we were to be seated at still had guests. We’d have to wait for them to leave, they’d already paid but we’re still sitting and visiting. The dining room had several empty tables, especially for a Friday night. When I inquired about the others, was told they were for other guests who also had reservations. I looked around, no one else was at the door or even on the street. When I suggested we be seated at one of those and then when the next guests came in, they be seated at our original table it seemed to blow her mind. She walked away, I assume to check with someone or look at the space, but came back and then seated us. We sat between two other small tables where servers weaved in and out helping other guests. We sat there for 15 minutes never acknowledged by the manager who we saw multiple times, the hostess as she seated other guests or any of the many servers. Never offered water, or a “I’ll be right with you”. We left our table and as we were leaving one sever said cheerfully, “have a good tonight” while the manager and hostess still didn’t acknowledge us. It was hardly busy for a Friday night! The unwelcome vibe began...
