Mama Kim — Restaurant in Greenwood Village

We were excited to try this restaurant during its soft opening, especially since we hadn’t had Malaysian food in years, but the experience fell short. The upscale décor was nice, even featuring touches like a bidet in the restroom, yet the food and service definitely did not match the fancy atmosphere. To make matters worse, the music in the evening was so loud it made conversation difficult. Strangely, when we arrived shortly after 5 p.m., right when dinner service started, we were told salmon was already sold out for the day, which didn’t make much sense. The food overall was underwhelming; having lived in Singapore and tried authentic Malaysian cuisine, what we had here was subpar, overpriced, and leaned more toward Taiwanese fusion than traditional flavors. For instance, two tiny skewers for $20 felt ridiculous. When we chatted with the owner about the surprisingly high prices, his response was that it seemed fair for the location - suggesting that perhaps people in Greenwood Village would be willing to pay, regardless of whether the food lived up to the cost. The Sauna Mee was also disappointing. The hotpot itself was already tiny for $20, and if you wanted any add-on proteins, you had to pay extra, which made it feel even more overpriced. To make matters worse, ours came with rice in addition to noodles inside the pot, which the staff later admitted was a kitchen mix-up. The rice itself was horrendous - not sure if it was too old or simply undercooked, but it was hard and dry. Even more frustrating, the “duo element” Sauna Mee turned out quite spicy despite us specifically asking if it was, and the menu made no mention of it. Service was lackluster: our forks were taken away after appetizers and never replaced when entrees arrived. Overall, for an average spend of $50+ per person, the experience was below average and not worth the price, unless you’ve never tried Malaysian food before and are simply curious. Finally got a chance to dine at the newly opened Mama Kim in DTC. Did not know they were closed between 2pm and 4pm and wasted a trip last time. The restaurant was spacious with both indoor and terrace seating. The decoration was modern and simple, resembling the feel of a hotel restaurant. The restaurant was not as busy early Sunday afternoon right before their mid-shift closure with just a few tables occupied. The server was busy shuffling between tables, taking orders, serving, bringing the receipts and cleaning the tables at the same time before the arrival of the next shift. Despite multitasking, the server was professional, courteous and the service was prompt. Ordered the Hainan Chicken Rice, Dancing Lion Panna Cotta and the iced Thai coffee. The Malaysian style Hainan Chicken Rice was quite authentic. The chicken was tender, juicy and smooth dipped in dark soy sauce. The chicken broth cooked rice was savory and aromatic with garlic sauce on the side. The upper part of the dancing lion panna cotta was made with red bean and the lower part was made with matcha, sitting atop Oreo crumbles, was very cute and eye catching. The panna cotta was smooth, creamy and lightly sweet, so even with the the Oreo crumbles, it was not overly sweet and easy for the taste. The iced Thai coffee mixing espresso with orange juice, Chinese five spice syrup and soda had a more adventurous and cocktail liked taste. Certainly one of the kind and unique. Was so excited to try the food because it smelled so amazing when we went to the spa next door. They spilled an 8 oz glass of wine (overpoured) in my lap leaving me drenched. It was no big deal at first, everyone has an off day at work I felt bad for the server. But it got worse when the manager came over to help. The glass had shattered on the table flinging glass on the table and beside me. He gave an apology and offered a dessert. Which was dissapointing. He then brought me dirty back of the house rags that smelled. My friend who felt bad for me asked for some napkins instead. They forgot them so we had to ask twice. In fear that I may consume broken glass we had to request a new drink for me as well. They didn't offer his...again we had to ask. After being at the table in wet clothes for a while we decided I should go home to change because I smelled so strongly of alcohol and again was uncomfortably wet. We checked out and left. A few hours later we realized they never brought our credit card back. When we called to follow up they said they didnt have it. Which was a concerning lie so we had to cancel the card.
