Bec Bagels — Restaurant in Hackensack

I’ve been to this place three times. First time I went, it was great - I received exactly what I ordered and it was delicious. Second time, I ordered a sesame bagel with olive cream cheese, chocolate croissant and couple more items. When I got home, the croissant wasn’t in the bag and the bagel was cinnamon raisin? I don’t even know if I was charged for the chocolate croissant, honestly I didn’t bother taking the receipt. So, it was so so disappointing because I was really looking forward to that bagel, and it just tasted weird and ruined the whole thing. Now, third time I went was today. I ordered a sesame bagel with olive cream cheese and a muffin. That’s it. When the screen for a tip popped up I took my time deciding what to do - I really didn’t want to leave any tip because, come on, at a place like that there just should be a tip jar at most, and not be putting people on the spot to tip for literally doing what you’re paid by your employer to do and nothing more. (I was a waitress for more time and I would’ve liked, so trust me, I know what I’m talking about). So anyway, I was taking my time fighting with myself about the tip thing, my finger was nowhere near the touch screen and all of a sudden the lady that took my order just selected 15% tip WITHOUT ASKING ME AT ALL. She literally took money from me right in front of my eyes without my permission. I think that’s the definition of stealing? She said nothing. Just selected it for me since I was taking a while. I didn’t even get to sign, the whole screen disappeared after that. ???? And to top it all off, when I got home, my bagel was with plain cream cheese instead of olive like I ordered. Are you kidding me? If you’re gonna steal a “tip” from me, at least make sure my order is right. I really love that they have different kinds of cream cheese, and different kinds of bagels, but that tip screen REALLY puts me off and, of course, I wish I’d get what I order? Get rid of that tip screen because, apparently, even if I tip it’s for nothing. Ridiculous. Btw, the star that I left is only for the bagels and cc… I don’t even know if I’ll go back but if I do I hope the service would be better. Found in the heart of Downtown Hackensack, BEC Bagels is a true gem of a bagelry. I found my bagels to be crisp outside, soft inside, and quite substantive. The bagels maintain their quality even when ordered in late afternoon (2:30pm), which for many bagelries is unusual. My one sandwich, a Taylor Ham, Egg and Cheese, was very substantial; the egg fluffy and large, three slices of Taylor, and the cheese complimentary. My coffee was quite good as well. The best part of my couple visits there turned out to be the young man behind the counter, who proved to be most pleasant, accommodating, and topmost, informative. I’ve given this place two chances for my Sunday bagel breakfast, and both times were consistently disappointing. The bagels themselves were just mediocre, but the real letdown was the sandwich. A simple combination of two eggs, Taylor ham, and cheese should be a savory, melt-in-your-mouth experience.
