I have went to Di Matteo's several times over the past year since I have been in the area for work. I haven't had the opportunity to dine in yet, so I can only comment on the take out. Overall, I really like Di Matteo's! The staff has been friendly and helpful and every time I have ordered take out so far it has been very fast. I do wish they offered delivery service but that isn't a huge deal as I don't live that far away. As for the pizza, it is very good. It won't blow your mind away, but I would say that after trying most of the pizza places in the area, this is one of the best I have had. It always tastes fresh and is hot. It's also apparent they use high quality ingredients, as the sauce and dough has always tasted very good. My one complaint with the restaurant (as far as take out) is the price. I usually get a large pizza and fries or a salad. Each time it runs me around or over $20 which I think is expensive, especially compared to the area. In my opinion, you should be able to get a large cheese pizza and a side salad or fries for around $16-18, but I think over $20 is expensive. Besides that, I really like Di Matteo's and would recommend the take out, and I hope I get the opportunity to dine in at some point soon. I will definitely continue to...
Read moreThe five stars aren't for the food, the service or the bathrooms- it's a cumulative rating. Since the late 70's it's been the best slice in new haven county. They haven't changed their neighborhood feel, they haven't gone fancy in their menu, and they've stayed in the plaza even after that crazy fire years back They've stayed the same and they've stuck with Hamden even after the rest of dixwell has become out own slice of Beirut. Their prices have changed only because , well, they need to pay their people. Bit the increase has not been punitive nor extreme. They still make parmesan dishes, lasagnas, pizzas and even beer and wine and fixing park without the stunning increases of what used to be a belt of great Italian spaghetti and pizza neighborhood joints. The pies are not intended to be Wooster st or modern, yet are spot on for out town. The dishes are generous filling and I'll pit them against any NYC Italian joint all day. Of course they feature foxin oark- necessary to Garner even one star, and provide affordable beer and wine. I appreciate their loyalty to Hamden, and in return, I offer mine. 45 plus years. I appreciate them, and like their food. I just wish I could drive...
