Overall: Sushi was good. Seafood was underwhelming and not cleaned properly (dirty and full of bones). Food was served late and missing items. Service was friendly but incompetent. This was our first visit, there will not be a second. More in depth review of experience below.
Food: Sushi was pretty good. Far from the best, but not bad for what it was. Fried seafood was terrible. The shrimp wasn't bad, but that's about it. The catfish was breaded like red lobster breading or something, not the good Louisiana/ New Orleans style light flaky breading true locals would be used to, this was more for tourists who don't know any better. Also, out of the 4 catfish filets, I ate 3 and pulled out an unheard of amount of ribcage bones because they weren't fileted properly. The first one got stuck in the back of my throat for a second, so after that I proceeded with caution and continued to pull out bones with almost every bite with the next 2 filets. I did not even attempt to eat the 4th. It was a combo platter of catfish and shrimp. I got 6 shrimp (medium size, pretty good), no hushpuppies (menu says platters get 2 hushpuppies), 4 catfish filets (filets were very large, but full of bones and not traditional breading). I also added a soft shell crab for $10, and was served the smallest baby Crab I've ever seen on a plate, that barely qualified as a soft shell crab anymore because the shell was fairly hard (probably not stored correctly which is upside down to prevent shell from hardening). I also don't think it was cleaned properly (lifting the apron and scrubbing with fresh water before cooking) because it was one of the dirtiest tasting softshells I've ever had.
Experience and service: The 2 stars is strictly for the sushi because it was pretty good, not incredible, but good. That is to say once it actually arrived to the table after half the party had already been served and had time to eat more than half their entrees (the sushi was brought out about 20+ mins after everything else, which is funny because everything else was actually cooked and the sushi wasn't lol so how does that happen??). Waitress was friendly enough, but not attentive whatsoever and we constantly had politely ask other staff members to refill drinks, bring condiments, and even hunt down our waitress just so we could pay to finally leave. Also it should be noted, during the course of our meal, we were brought other people's food on 2 occasions, and the table next to us was also brought the wrong food at one point. Not necessarily an inconvenience, but definitely speaks to the lack or organization going on. Amidst the confusion of right and wrong orders showing up to our table, when the sushi was eventually brought out of the 5 sushi rolls we ordered, 4 were correct and one was wrong. Eventually the missing order was brought out and we were toldwe could keep the wrong one free of charge (thanks for not charging us for your mistake lol). This was our first time trying them, maybe it was an off day, who knows, but we'll never find out because we won't be back. For the prices they charge, it was extremely unsatisfactory and I'll be telling everybody I can about the experience....
Read moreWe Love ,Love Cates food it once again was delicious ! We live over an hour away but Cates is our favorite place and it is wonderful- We came to celebrate my birthday dinner 7/2023 with friends and family! We had apps & a cocktail- our food came out ,a long wait for chop sticks but that’s ok -first time eating sushi with a fork ! While our sweet 11 years on the job seasoned waitress was pleasant & a great server! We enjoyed ourselves then it was time to pay .We ask our server to split the table into 4 sets of 2 couples before hand. This was a disappointment-no tickets she verbally called out each of our orders and verbally called out our totals from a hand held device so we never saw our tickets - we ask but she avoids us -only given a verbal total to pay - Going in blind -Not realizing our bill included the tip ! I even asked her , i need help idk what to tip on $126 - she never said gratuity was included or you can tip more - not one word to the 8 of us -I paid cash , i tipped $23 on my $126 bill unknowingly giving a $41 tip - my sis ask can i get a copy she said i can go to the back to get one .After I already paid i see this happen I ask her the same -3 times everyone is getting up i’m still waiting on her to return- I went find her in the back -I’d like my bill copy also as she made it seem as though it wasn’t possible in the beginning for a bill copy - So after the fact we all paid my Sis looking over her bill said guys we were automatically charged gratuity- the whole realized at this point all of the table double tipped - at that point i ask for my copy 3 times finding i too was already charged for tip which was fine but not being to see a visual was not fine - i was charged twice for an $11 roll and i tipped an extra $23 - i was not happy paying $34 more than i should have -‼️Our entire table tipping double unaware we were doing so ! Shame Shame- why is this allowed to happen? makes us all question -was this a part of an extra money making scheme on behalf of our server ? Happy Birthday to me , or it was until all this -I got my $34 returned ,that’s a lot of money for a senior on a fixed income and I felt bad for her but she got to keep the rest of the tables double tips ! Moral of the story request to check your tickets before hand ask for a copy before you pay and...
Read moreMy family and I stopped by on our way back to Texas from Alabama. My dad found this spot after a quick google search. It’s not too far from the highway. We came in around 2:30pm and were sat immediately! Our server Lauren was very sweet! She didn’t seem to know any of the beers on the menu, but she used her resources to help my dad find “the right beer”. They found it on the second try. It would have been the first had he used better descriptive words haha. Lauren was not afraid to find the answers she didn’t know and kept a smile in her voice(couldn’t see her mouth because of her mask) throughout the whole experience . As for the food, the menu is pretty big. We didn’t try any appetizers. I got the shrimp po’boy. There was not much Mayo, but the bread was delicious. The shrimp was perfectly battered and fried. I enjoyed the side of fried okra. My partner got the soft shell po’boy which also lacked Mayo. Soft shell crab was decent. Overall pretty good. Side of gravy and rice was good! My nephew got the blackened chicken with okra and a side salad. He seemed to like it all pretty well. My dad got the fried catfish and vegetables. He cleared the whole plate and had nothing but high praises. However, my mom had the grilled shrimp with a side of okra. The shrimp was too salty for her taste. Not all of the fried okra pieces were cooked all the way. Just had to be that batch, my okra was fried correctly. None of the extra sauces we asked for when we ordered the food came out when the food did. Lauren had to go back and get them. I don’t know if that was a foul on her part or the expo. Not a big deal, she brought the sauces out for us. The sushi bar was neat and did not smell. I was surprised they had sushi, but it seemed they had it going on! There weren’t too many people in at the time (kind of an odd time to go in) but the atmosphere was cool, besides the bus boy. His eye contact was unsettling.
