It's hard not to like a 28" pizza!
Luckily Benny Sorrentino's' doesn't do anything to change first impressions.
Like most Valley pizza the crust tends to be underdone. Being a former "Heathen Yankee" I grew up on real New York pizza, so it's a bit unfair for me to ding them for putting out a product that appeals to the taste demographic. But for my taste, the oven temperatures need to be higher to make the crust crispier. (They will cook the crust crisper upon request)
The sauce is good and not overly sweet; the cheese is a tasty mozzarella, liberally applied.
They source quality ingredients, from the flour to the meats and cheeses, the flavor comes through in their products.
Pricing readable considering the portions.
Staff is friendly, competent, and a genuine pleasure to deal with. Owners take note, you need to give props to your people.
The restaurant itself has limited indoor seating; outdoor seating is available on beautiful days.
Being in downtown, it's less than a two-minute walk to Massanutten Regional Library; I typically grab a slice to go and walk over to sit in front of the library.
Benny's is a great place to have, whether grabbing a slice to sit outside and people watch, or...
Read moreStopped here after attending a JMU tour, in which it was said that Benny's is a bucket list experience and that the slices were as big as your head (according to JMU students). Not one to shy away from a challenge, I went to Benny's with the express intent of measuring my head against one of their pizza slices. I would say my head was still bigger, but the pizza slices lived up to the hype. These are massive slices (now image how big my head must be). At first, I thought we could order a whole pie. But with prices exceeding $40.00, we thought better and ordered the slices. I got one pepperoni and a siracha sausage slice (which was much better than the pepperoni. The slices were solid and I can understand why the students flock here. The thing I really liked is that you can hold the slice up to your head and you don't have to worry about the toppings sliding off or getting a grease bath on your pants below. I think Dave Portnoy ranked the pizza around 6.5 mark, but I would give it a 7, which I think is a respectable number. Seating is limited, but we came during off hours so it wasn't a problem. Also no fountain sodas, so everything's in a...
Read moreBenny's is the single best place to get a cheap meal in Harrisonburg at any time of the day. Each slice is bigger than your face! Their prices are $4 for cheese, $5 for pepperoni, and there are always a selection of fun recipes that switch on a regular basis, always keeping things fresh.
Aside from the pizza, of course, there's not much left wanting. The staff Benny's hires are down to earth and friendly. Great management means whether you're getting pizza at noon or midnight, you'll have friendly people helping you out.
The smaller details also help to set Benny's apart. The atmosphere is urban, with a bit of a pop punk aesthetic. It's not the Four Seasons, and it's better because of how it embraces it's fun look. Benny's also sells craft beers, and rounds all taxes so that you can pay in dollar bills, without needing to worry about change. Do yourself a favor, and...
