Here’s a story. Last week we went to eat at Oishi sushi 2 blocks away from this Maki sushi restaurant. The food there was so bad, the katsu was cold and soggy. After that we were walking just to check some other places. We found Maki, and we were like let’s try it next week because they have 4.8 stars in google. I guess you can’t rely on google reviews too. So here we are, I ordered the same one pork katsu. My gosh…these people don’t know how to make katsu. It was hard and dry like a cardboard. I ate a little bit, the waiter said we will give you a free roll. I said no, I am here for katsu. If I was the owner or manager whatever. I will give you at least 20% off from your check just to say sorry for what you badly served. But no, they didn’t, no customer service at all. Not that I want them to give me a discount. You should just used common sense. When you served bad food, customer should not pay the full price or not pay at all. The same thing as Oishi sushi, even they give me free food never again. I’m not being prejudice of other Asians who likes to make Japanese food. If you imitate Japan at least study, or learn how to make it. And by the way when we came in I can smell a burning old oil. I’m just wondering do they change oil in their deep fryer? I felt like stinging in my eyes and start tearing. I told the waiter and he...

We have tried every single sushi spot around the area. Rutherford, East Rutherford, Wood Ridge, etc.

This spot is truly the best sushi in the area. Every single thing we got was incredible. You can really taste the freshness in each bite.

I always judge a place by their yellowtail and spicy tuna, both blew me away.

I tried the torched beef wagyu and was immediately blown away I ordered another and tried the torched salmon and torched tuna.

My wife who’s vegetarian doesn’t usually like going to sushi spots because there’s not much for her but she had the veggie roll and the sweet potato roll.

I tried her sweet potato roll and that was incredible.

Place is a BYOB spot so next time we’re bringing wine or sake.

The owner Pete is the one making the rolls behind the counter so you just know it’s going to be good.

We’re making this our Thursday night spot.

Highly recommend coming and trying out the food.

Got home and couldn’t stop thinking about the beef wagyu.

Will be making our way...

I am always in search of quality sushi. This little unassuming ( albeit 4.8 google rating) sushi joint as I like call them, in Habrouck Heights exceeded expectations. In an area that has a lot, I mean a lot of sushi joints that usually disappoint...Maki Sushi was a win for the good guys. Started off with the big three..nigiri. the tuna was deep red..and tender...we up graded to salmon belly..which was silky and fatty at the same time. The yellowtail had that unmistakable YT richness that only about 1/3 of sushi joints invest in.

Nit much of a roll person but the rolls were great...tuna/avocado with tuna and tobiko on top. Big tuna inside, big avocado too. We also had a Crunchy Tuna roll..spiced tuna with spicy Kani on top. Very nice. I also noted the rolls are riced with precision, not too much, letting the ingredients shine.

Let my research of joints payoff for...

Let me start by saying I eat a lot of sushi and have been to almost all the sushi places in the area. Maki sushi is by far one of if not the best sushi restaurants in the area hands down. The sushi and sashimi is very fresh colorful and tasty. They have a nice variety of rolls and other dishes. There is a dish for everyone. The owners and staff make you feel welcomed and treat you like family. I eat here at least once a week. I don’t know what these other people’s reviews are talking about when they give this place a negative review. I guess opinions vary. Also it might be the competition trying to give them a bad review. All I’m saying is give them a try and you won’t be Disappointed. 👍🏼

Very much enjoyed, Maki! Quiet Friday night, we weren't too hungry. Pictured are fried beef gyoza and the avocado fries. Both were delicious. Nice a crispy, crunchy were the gyoza, and the avocado fries were a new experience for my partner and I. Shaved parmesian cheese with some nice dipping sauce. Couldn't wrap my head around it at first. Ended up cleaning the plate, very good. We finished with a 20pc sashimi platter we split. A little pricey, however, the quality of fish was excellent, and the portion of each piece was nice! As you know, I don't write a review without letting you know this place is BYOB. It's definitely perfect for a date night! 4.6/5

Finally decided to try this place after seeing it's good reviews. I really did enjoy it but I do have to go back to get more of a feel to it. I have to go back and order some sushi. This trip I did not try it. I had shrimp teriyaki which was great. Good service overall I would say. Was greeted upon arrival and sat down right away. Given time to settle down, he took our drink order and came back for our entrees. It's a cute little place with some nice decor. It's not too big inside but they do well with the space. Will update review once I try sushi but I will definitely be back.
