Sofia's Mediterranean Grill — Restaurant in Hasbrouck Heights

Sofia's - Our Go To Place for Greek Food I had eaten at Sofia's a few years ago with my retirement group and was impressed. Even though it is 40 minutes from our house, I decided to take my wife there to experience their outstanding Taramosalata which is a special appetizer and while not on the menu, is usually available. It was so good that now, if we plan to go there, we phone them in the afternoon to make sure that they will be serving it the night we come. We find ourselves eating there every two or three weeks. The Taramosalata is a dip made with caviar and other spices - it is served with fried pita (yum) and regular pita. I have tried it elsewhere and it pales in comparison to Sofia's. Someone at Sofia's must have the "secret" recipe. Other dishes at Sofia's are superfresh and well presented. Their Spanaki salad is a meal in itself - I top it off with grilled shrimp. My wife orders the chicken platter - the chicken is always juicy - never dry and there is so much that she always take some home. The magic espresso machine makes me a wonderful decaf espresso which is consistently good. Service is impeccable and there is always a smile and a warm greeting when we come. I came here twice this week for a meeting and I have to say I am extremely disappointed in this place. Let’s start with the fact that during a pandemic the servers are wearing their mask barely covering their mouths. They are extremely pushy over ordering right away. We haven’t even sit on our chairs when the server started asking for orders. Additionally, the second time we got here, when we ordered coffees (the four of us) there was this lame excuse “let me check if the espresso machine is working “ hah! We had dessert, coffees and bottles of waters. Somehow that wasn’t enough and we were told to leave(while still in a meeting)after countless of times the servers asking us if we need anything else and we were told that they are allowed so serve apparently certain amount of time. The table sitting next us was already there before we even came and was told absolutely no such thing i was a customer for more than a year, constantly ordering for a pick up or delivery and I am extremely disappointed that I had to write...

Every single time. Sofia's delivers. I have gone each and every time, getting some sort of different variety every time and each time I love the meal. The platters are fantastic to start, that was my go to the first two times around, the sheer amount of food is staggering but regardless of that, the quality is fantastic as well. The Gyro is tasty but unlike most gyro meat, its palatable, I can eat the entire plate and not feel awful or like I never want to see gyro meat again.

The chicken is cooked to perfection, nice bit of char, good seasoning and still juicy. Not an easy feat when it comes to cooking chicken!

The greek fries are to die for and definitely try the hummus and the Saganaki, it is broiled cheese and it is heavenly. It comes out bubbling, oozing and delicious, combined with some pita, its a hard appetizer to beat.
