Kamakahonu National Historic Landmark, located in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii, offers a variety of water activities, with kayaking being a popular choice among visitors. The calm and sheltered waters of Kamakahonu Beach make it an ideal spot for both novice and experienced kayakers. Kayak rentals and guided tours allowing you to explore the bay at your own pace. Paddling in the vicinity of Kamakahonu provides a breathtaking view of the coastline and the opportunity to encounter marine life such as dolphins, sea turtles, and flying fish. The serene environment and historical significance of the area enhance the overall experience, making it a memorable activity for those visiting the landmark. If you're in search of natural beauty, historical context, and the chance to engage with Hawaii’s marine environment, I highly recommend kayaking at Kamakahonu National Historic Landmark.

If you want to see green turtles, you’ll see many of them here. Walk to your left of the park, go there a few hours before the sundown. Beautiful place to catch the sunset( we found the short cut by parking at the end corner of the harbor. Walk for about less than 10 minutes and the beach is in front of you). If you decide to go for a long walk on the trail by the visitor center, it will be couple miles long round trip. Make sure to have great hiking shoes on. It’s sands and lava rocks throughout the trail. Towards the end of the trail, it’s so breathtaking.

After Kamehameha's death, a hale poki (mortuary house) was built next to the heiau to hold his bones. While the original buildings are now gone, the site has several reconstructed structures and is important as not only the last residence of Kamehameha I, who united all of the Hawaiian Islands, but also as the capital of the Kingdom of Hawai'i and the site were the Hawaiian system of kapu was ended and the first Christian missionaries landed on the islands.

Nice spot to visit especially when there is an event The site itself is situated beautifully in the northern end of Kona. It’s hard to imagine this is where the first missionary reached Hawaii. You can still see the hut and the simple set up surrounding it, I am assuming these are all replica. This spot does get crowded when there is an event. Nonetheless there are a couple of small beaches to play in while watching all the hustles. Happy travels.
