Another reminder of why we stopped going here years ago....the pictures are of a sandwich we were given to replace the first one. The first one was on different bread and about a quarter of the size as the one pictured. When the first sandwich was delivered, the person who ordered it asked if that was for a child, that's how small it was, comical in comparison to the large empty plate it was served on (was as big as the little round dish the coleslaw served in). The waiter then notified us that they ran out of the bread it's supposed to come on. Asked us if we want another half to the sandwich, which the three halves still equated to less than a half of normal size. The person said no, and almost changed their entire order (mind you everyone else at the table had already been served), when the server finally asked if we wanted the sandwich on sourdough - we were skeptical but he promised it'd be normal sized. Hesitantly, we agreed. The nerve the chef had to bring out the sandwich in the picture - not only was the cheese unmelted, there was tuna only in a small circle in the middle of the bread. You can clearly see how much bread in proportion to tuna, I took a bite and only tasted bread. After the waiter ignored us for the next 20 minutes (never coming around once to even refill our coffee), we finally were able to get his attention and asked for more tuna. He tried arguing that the amount of tuna present was the exact same amount that was in the first (very small, incorrectly made, and improperly offered substitutions in a timely manner). I argued with the waiter, that if he could please just bring us enough tuna to cover the bread, we'd be somewhat happy. On top of that, the country fried steak and country potatoes were also ruined by the chef, who chose to mix raw red onion and raw bell pepper in with the over cooked, soggy potatoes. If I wasn't in a rush, I would've demanded a manager, but even if our meal had been offered to be comped, I honestly will never go back to this black bear diner location in Hayward, Ca across from Chabot College. This experience has reoccurred each time we've tried to give them a chance for redemption. If they still can't get it right after all these years, I'll save my frustrations and money to go somewhere where the chefs actually take pride in their work, and floor staff care about the patrons. Maybe they need higher wages? Who knows. I give up on them! Even their eggs are overcooked. Best thing here is the free coffee refills

YASMINE IS THE WORST!!! For someone who works "everyday" she is absolutely terrible! Black bear diner is normally a great establishment, but bye all means make the drive to go to any other one then this location. I always order the same thing weather I'm there in person or ordering they door dash. I like my food made custom to my liking and they've ALWAYS worked with me in the past, but about a month ago when I called to confirm all the adjustments YASMINE answered and asked me to repeat myself, no lie, about 6x-7x. I was ordering it to be delivered to my work, and I didnt want to be late but I needed the order to be correct since that's what I was paying for. I asked her to put the manager on the phone and I stayed on hold for over 15mins. I detoured and went there. Some kitchen manager took my order when I got there, made it fast since I mentioned I was now late for work, and the store manager gave me a little discount. YASMINE needs to learn more from them. Fast forward to today... I placed the order like always thru doordash, called to confirm everything, YASMINE answered, I'm pretty sure she remembered who I was, she was very short with me, cut me off while I was speaking, told me they cant adjust ge he order and that they e never done it for me in the past, that she would know cause she works there "everyday." She said at most she can fulfill my request of changing my pancakes to french toast, but that's it... of course when it arrived, it was pancakes. YASMINE, YOU ARE THE WORST!!! I WILL NEVER RECOMMEND ANYONE TO GO THERE UNTILL YOUR FIRED OR LEARN PROPER CUSTOMER SERVICE. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW YOU CAN WORK THERE "EVERYDAY" AND STILL BE THIS TERRIBLE! POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE REFLECTS LEADERSHIP. TOUR NOW MAKING YOUR SUPERIORS LOOK BAD!!!

Busy. At least 20 waiting to be seated. No Matter! 15 minutes and that's all it took. Isabel was nice enough to find me a table near an outlet (needed it for my laptop). Vatsana! was my waitress. Enjoyed having her. Wonderful girl with a very nice spirit about her. She, like many others, was bouncing from table to table like a pinball. I especially appreciated that she kept the emptied dishes cleared from my table, because the one I was seated at was a two person, smaller table. Also, everything came out hot and as ordered/presentation nice. I want to mention a man named A.J. When I saw him, his job seemed to focus on getting the just-prepared food into the waitresses hands, and making sure the order was accurate. He was like Quarterback behind the counter. Very good, and very efficient at that. My food: I ordered the classic bowl. A LOT of food. Got a pancake as an option for the toast If I had to mention anything negative about this stop I would say the pancake was dry, and the butter was cold, which isn't a good mix. But if that is all I can find as a negative, this Black Bear Diner is doing a lot Right! The place was filled, yet was an impressive organized machine at what it does! Isabel, VATSANA, A.J., and crew, Thanks for a nice visit to a Clean Restaurant! Bob

We came here for breakfast today and the service was terrible. Our hash brown and bacon was burnt and my waffle was also burnt and had it remade and it was undercooked. The icing on the cake is when we found hair on my sister’s French toast plate. What’s worst is, we tried to tell our waiter and he tried to play it off like it was from the eggs and my sister had to take the butter knife from the waiter and pull out the hair so he can see it. We immediately stopped eating and requested to speak to the manager. The waiter went to the back and came back and said the manager can’t come right now because he is busy but said we can get 50% off our meal. We proceeded to tell the waiter we are not paying for the food because there was hair on it and the waiter proceeded to say, it’s ok you guys don’t have to pay so you guys can leave. We ended up leaving but we really wanted to talk to the manager but was refused. Don’t recommend going here. Also the waiter was not very attentive to come by and check if we needed refills, we had to wave him down.

The clerks were kind and respectful, and they answered my inquiries in fine detail regarding their menu items. This place may compete with Denny’s and IHOP, but Black Bear Diner is in the same boat as Emil Villa’s California BBQ: better than Denny’s and IHOP. And the place is so off the books, there isn't a large crowd of people (though I did come on a weekday); thus, one didn't have to wait too long to be serviced. I would come here regularly, but I must catch a bus. Regardless, I recommend this place to anyone with a big appetite and get their money’s worth from the provided portions. I asked if they could combine two menu items, a chili cheddar burger, and a pot roast melt, and they got it done in 10 minutes and without excessively charging me extra. If you ask me, Black Bear Diner is criminally underrated and should have more locations. My only minor complaint is that their advertised specials, such as steak and eggs breakfast for $9.99, are served from 6 am to 10 am. Those specials should be served all day.
