Tony's converted me from thinking that the best donuts in St. Louis were made by Old Town in Florissant, which I would have bet a beer on never happening. While I give Old Town the edge for having more variety with their daily flavor, Tony's donuts are consistently better (and I hate to say it because Tony's location looks like a generic corporate coffee place in the vein of Starbucks whereas Old Town epitomizes small town business and operates out of a storefront in a small shopping plaza).
A few things combine to cost Tony's donuts two stars, though I admit to its product having great flavor. Its hours are limited while its direct competition stays open on the same perpetual basis as Waffle House, so if I get a donut craving, and am going to succumb to that urge, if Tony's Donuts is going to be my hookup, it better be during limited hours. Especially as the donuts run out (and briskly) over the course of the day; again, their competitor is always making fresh batches so I will be able to pick from essentially the same wide range of options at 2am as at 10am... in my experience with Tony's, you want to get there around 8am if you want a full-case of baked goods from which to select your assortment.
Another problem Tony's faces for me is that while I am sure it is convenient to many commuters as it is essentially just off the interstate, the actual lot it is in is shared with a gas station, and to get back out and turned toward home I have to wait on a light. It's minor, sure, but compared to if they had built on of the several other vacant food lots nearby with an easier turn-in/turn-out? It just adds up, or more precisely, subtracts.
Overall: good donuts when they have them fresh, and if it is convenient for you to get there. I have not tried their other food, admittedly, as my visits have been to buy donuts to share among groups, not me gorging on a dozen sour-cream cake glazed and a breakfast sandwich while hunched over my passenger seat like a shameful gluten-ghoul. That would be crazy. But again, I cannot comment on their other food, just the donuts. The coffee is nothing special in my opinion, but I tend not to have strong opinions about coffee whether from McDonald's, Kaldi, or the unknown hot brown liquid provided during a colloquium at a university; in my opinion coffee is just a vehicle for sugar and milk, so maybe I am shorting Tony's a star by not appreciating their brew as well. This is my disclaimer that if they also have the best coffee in St. Louis, I didn't know, and you can assume I would have reconsidered how that affected the reasons for the other stars they lost.
Edit disclosure: it was brought to my attention that there was a typo, which I have rectified. No changes to meaning, tone, rating,...
Read moreI had an experience of a life time here. The lady I expect her to be the owner of the owner wife of some one close or dear to the estate there cause I and her had a one on one talk about the said children I had with me whom like to act out in public and I had just told to go sit down due to being in the establishment playing and being smart mouth.
Which is how I and the young lady end up in a conversation talking. My apologizing to her and leaving. Which wasn’t that long ago because here it is now I am doing the review in the persons home as my bags & I are being packed to move because of the exact same things happening in Tony’s Donuts & cafe happening every day inside the home and outside the home even with the mother of the children whom I have in my 3 years tried to help but because they all have been ENABLED TO DO WHA THEY WANT ANYTIME ANY WHERE NEVER HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR ACTING APPROPRIATELY OUT IN PUBLIC JUST RUNNING CRAZY ITS HAS CAUSED A GREAT DEAL OF STRESS AND I JUST WANTED TO LET EVERYONE KNOW AT TONYS DONUTS & CAFE who thought and said I was wrong for bringing awareness to the said children in that time are now torn asking me why I am leaving because I have been there for them and help direct them not enabling them in all that loud running & talking in public. Letting them know in a place of business as yours as that day you have people looking and listening as you all had been and seen and one day you all will see What I ADJUA FREDERICK MEAN AND MEANT BY YOU CAN NOT GO OUT IN PUBLIC AND MAKE A SCENE AND QUESTION ADULT AUTHORITY BECAUSE YOU THOUGHT IT WAS OKAY. It’s a time & place for all those things. And that was what i was letting the children know that day when I was told I was being rude and talking to the children disrespectful in Tony’s.
Ps by the way the donuts were so sweet I couldn’t even finish mines and my smoothie was something to die for! I give it a 10 out 10 I did let the young lady know I didn’t take offense to her nature as I am a mother as well. I have a son and daughter myself the children I was with and had are and were not mine. That my son was 25 and my daughter was 9 and she said to get respect you have to give it which say a lot about my role in each of the 4 lives I am currently existing due to...
Read moreTo start, Tony’s donuts aren’t the best (a little dry unless you get them fresh) but they’ll do if you need a pick me up for your sweet tooth. I was told their breakfast bagels were delicious and decided to try something new. I was told in the drive thru by a pleasant young lady that one of the sandwiches ordered would take 15 minutes so I offered to come in and wait as to not hold up their busy drive thru. I myself work in hospitality for a corporation that is busier than this small one, so I am mindful when it comes to things that can slow places down. I come inside with my mother and was greeted by the donut counter attendant (dark haired woman older than the rest possibly the owner who knows). She was hurried in her approach; okay cool you’re busy but slow down so you can properly hear the order. She was so hurried she overlooked the full basket of everything bagels and said they were out when I placed one order for a sandwich later correcting herself. As I continue my order she cuts me off and asks me to move down to the register to continue the order; great makes sense I started to go that way to begin with before she rushed me into telling her my order. Demeanor was poor, I tried to let her know it’s okay just breath I work in this industry too for “corporation name” and she said this isn’t them. Well I know it isn’t Susan, I’m saying I get you’re busy but also people spend money here so treat them with decency when they have extended the same (though you were rude from the start) you might want to extend grace to someone who has not had a sandwich off your menu and is attempting to complete their order while you rush them. And if you can’t take the heat then find another kitchen to tend to. Maybe one from home where you can talk to your family that way. Try night shift, if pressure is hard for you to handle day shift may not be for you. I’m sure my review will make you chuckle so enjoy but your attitude was poor Susan. You’ll come across the right person one day who’ll set you...
