I've been eating here since 1999. If I did this review in the early years, it would have been at least 4 stars and maybe 5. Over the years they have slowly been going down while their prices go slightly up. Anyhow, a number of years ago China Wok switched to a cheaper grain of rice. I doubt many people noticed, but I did. Its still good, but not as good as it used to be. The prices have increased a couple times, but they priced very competitively. Price or not, the quality of the food has to be right. I've had a few dishes I never ordered a second time. I have a few favorite dishes, including one with mixed vegetables. They used to put a lot of snow peas in some of those dishes, but now I get about two snow peas (unless I pay extra for a few more). So the food quality and ingredients are not what it used to be. But at least things were always cooked fresh and very hot. But I have noticed that in the last year that a number of my dishes, which used to be piping hot when I got home, have not been quite as warm as I'd prefer. In fact, a month or two ago they under-cooked my General Tso's chicken and I reluctantly ate it. I did not get sick, so that was good. You can't always get a winner, and there's an obvious downward trend that showed up tonight. I ordered General Tso's tonight and got their largest portion ($11.97 with tax) for my son and I. I was poor growing up and then joined the Marines, so I can eat most anything. Tonight was the worst tasting dish I've ever had there. It was highly overcooked or dried out on a warmer all day, or something. It was drenched in sauce, which they usually use about half that amount or less on any other occasion. Two times ago the sauce was runny like water and not much of it. Where is the consistency? So I called them because I tossed some of mine and my son did not eat hardly any of his, and it's his favorite dish there. t is occasionally difficult to order food because of their poor English skills and don't bother trying to call to complain about their food. The first one clearly did not understand and was trying to place a new order. She gave the phone to another person who said I had to bring the food back to them and then they would cook another batch. That was not what I wanted to hear. First, the taste of this was disgusting and the last thing I want to put in my mouth. Then, I don't want to drive back, discuss their mistake, place another order, wait 10-15 minutes while the guy who always stares at me every time I go in there spits in my food because I am complaining about his lousy cooking. Why do you always stare at me dude? Anyone else notice him do that too? Anyhow, I told the lady that this was not acceptable to me. I said that I can bring the food back, but I don't want another order tonight, but instead wanted a credit for a future order. She told me no, and I can do it this way or there is nothing she will do for me. I explained I was not interested in going through this and her policy was a bad one. She said "ok." There was nothing else worth trying to say to any of these people. So I lost that battle. The Chinese seem to be very greedy and don't understand good business practices. Their ridiculous policy of having to run back with your bad dish (regardless of others who might be eating theirs at home without you) to get another disgusting specimen of the same thing is unbelievable. I guess they know most people won't want to bother. I may likely return some day and order anything other than their General Tso's Chicken. They will surly lose my repeat business for at least a few months. And if the Fortune House is as good as I hear, China Wok may have lost at 16-year customer over a 12-dollar dish. If someone with language skills can explain this to them, they might learn that they can't skimp on their cooking and that they have to stand behind their product when a mistake occurs. Instead of "China Wok," I may start referring to them as "China Wong," as in the wong place to go for good...
Read moreWe just moved to Hendersonville in June and have been trying to find great Chinese food and it's been really tough. Most places have good meat but it has been a pain to find a good take out place with good egg rolls, rice and crispy noodles under the same roof. Every place we have been to has the nasty weird tasting skinny egg rolls you find in your grocers freezer or at the food court in your local mall. After almost giving up on finding a good place in the area, we stopped into China Wok after being disappointed with our lunch at another restaurant we literally just ate at. The plan was to just get a lunch plate, egg roll and crispy noodles to see what it was like. Turns out it was a great decision, we ended up eating the whole meal. They have everything we were looking for. The meat was good and flavorful, the egg rolls were the bigger egg rolls that normal Chinese food places have, the rice was good and they had the good crispy noodles that are made from the wonton wrapper instead of the hard stale cracker like ones. After going there several times they haven't disappointed. The General Tso's and Orange chicken are really good. The Sweet and Sour Chicken is always fresh and crispy although I'd prefer the sauce to be a little sweeter but that's my preference. The Crab Rangoon, house fried rice and spring rolls are also good here. If I had any complaints about any of the meals it would be about the Bourbon Chicken and Mongolian Beef. While they were tasty, the time I got the Bourbon Chicken it was a little dry and the sauce wasn't thick enough for my liking and the Mongolian Beef was kind of the same. Very minor complaint though and not enough for me to knock off a star. On top of all that, the portion size is VERY generous. I rate this place a 5 star because it's the best Chinese restaurant in the city and deserves the recognition. This is the only place we eat Chinese takeout from in the area and it's...
Read moreThis is where we go for Chinese Takeout now. Started here when we moved, then switched to Fortune House which went downhill around covid so then it was Peking House, had issues so switched again to Ming. They started having issues so back to China Wok for now. The best Chinese takeout in town is China Cottage but takes too long to get home. China Wok is the next best and should probably have been four stars but I added one star for all the one star reviews coming from people that don't realize all the battered fried chicken at takeout places with the exception of sweet and sour and lemon chicken come from the same food service supplier. All of it. It's the same for every takeout place in town except Panda which has their own supply chain. Yes, it's mostly batter and the crab rangoon doesn't contain real crab which was a real shock. /s China Wok is generous with portions including the meat and is a good value in my opinion. Don't take my word for it, just look at the char siu pork and vegetable photo. This is a usual portion. If you get soup and a couple apps you can easily split an entree. The soups and appetizers are usually pretty good if they don't burn the crap out of the boneless spare ribs. Fried wings in particular are great, I eat them with a Thai sauce I have. Shrimp can be a little gummy sometimes but still better than Peking House where all the proteins are always gummy. (Edit) Went there last night, Singapore noodles are good if you like curry flavor. If you ask for extra hot sometimes they are too salty so I added a little tabasco scorpion and it was perfect. The lo mein was a little dry so a shot of soy sauce and some sesame oil...
