I feel bad writing this review because I really wanted to love this place. I was looking for nice spots for brunch around Hilton Head and this spot immediately caught my attention. I was super excited about the array of crepe options they had, and the environment of the place looked super pretty!
The atmosphere is one thing I had right! There are different floral patterned table clothes on each table that all look so pretty. Both indoor and outdoor seating. The place was busy on a Saturday morning as expected, but our party of 5 only had to wait around ten minutes for a table which was super nice.
The drinks were also SO GOOD too! I got the chai latte; loved it so much. There are tons of specials they seem to have for coffees and lattes too, such as a lavender matcha. Didn't get to try but always exciting to see so many unique specials, while still offering the expected standards.
That's the last good thing I have to say about this place! The food and service were just disappointing. One of the first things I noticed when our waters were brought out were the tiny particles floating around the water. Seemed to be dust, small hairs, etc; the water just looked kind of dirty. I would've asked my server for new water, but they just never seemed to come around. It took quite a while to place our orders for food and even longer to get the check after.
My crepes looked super pretty! But just tasted so bland. I ordered the Washington Crepe, which was just crepe, cherries, and a sweet cream cheese. What I was disappointed to discover was that the sweet cream cheese amounted to just the tiniest drizzle, and I was just eating crepes and cherries. Which would be fine! If the cherries didn't taste so bland! It all just tasted like nothing. I suppose I shouldn't have expected anything crazy when the ingredient list was so simple. But maybe it's not too much to ask for my food to taste good.
My sister found a long nasty hair in her crepes. Which grossed out the entire party. I went to go wash out that disgusting feeling in my mouth with water, and then remembered there were hairs in the water too! Would've been nice to ask for fresh water, if only our server was around!
Hopefully The French Bakery is able to fix the problem with whatever is shedding in their kitchen. It's truly a really pretty spot, I'm just not the biggest fan of hair in my...
Read moreI wish there was a negative star rating. There were so many issues that I had to write to the health inspector because I don't understand why this place is in business.
First we were disappointed by the dirt and dust everywhere. It's not that hard to clean a restaurant especially when Lots of the staff don't seem to be doing much. When the staff in front of house and back of house are all wearing soiled dirty clothes, there is a big problem.
We decided to order food anyways hoping this was a bad day but that was a mistake. Firstly I was given spoiled creamer for my coffee. I didn't realize it until I took a sip... Putrid. When I sniffed the creamer it had an aroma of aged feta or really didn't feet! The waitress didn't come back for 30 minutes so I was left with no beverage that whole time. She was around but wouldn't look our way and multiple attempts to get her attention failed.
The food arrived in a rather stale state. My omelette had what looked like white fur like hairs on it which was very confusing. I have a cat so I thought, oh wow, my cats fur is here now but after some reflection, I don't think it was from mev especially after reading other reviews.
My omelette was accompanied by "fresh" fruit, which is laughable as you can see by the photos with the moldy fruit that was served. How many people saw this and still sent it out to be served?!
I ordered an omelette with bacon and ham, but received an omelette filled with what tasted like hot dogs... Really like cheap hot dogs. I assume it was their sausage? I have no idea but it was gross.
The other man was served with rotten blackened lettuce. Basically everything was spoiled and trash.
The server took about another 30 minutes to get the check after our very disgusting meals were taken. She didn't ask how anything was. I had to ask her for the receipt because I was shocked that the bill was $90 for 2 simple breakfasts. We didn't realize a glass of orange juice was $9 and they charge for all the sides separately. I didn't want or order the moldy fruit or stale bread so I don't know why I'm charged for them. The waitress didn't stick around, she bolted as soon as she dropped the receipt off.
-100... There are so many great places to eat, skip this one especially if you care about...
Read moreDropped in twice here during our week on the island. First time, got a croissant and a mixed berry scone (there are no signs on the display telling you what anything is - ask about the blueberry scones and you'll quickly be told that its mixed berry... oops, excuse me for not knowing).
Second time, went by at 2:15pm since the timing on their webpage and on the door indicates a 3pm close. Doors were open and diners were eating at tables inside the restaurant. Stood at the display counter where there were a lot of desserts laid out - scones, Napoleon's, things with whipped cream on them. Yum.
After a couple of minutes of being ignored, a lady came in and asked about the scone (it's mixed berry !) and muffins. The woman near the counter answered and then stated that if we were looking for take out that they were closed already.
I answered that the door was open and it said 3pm. Her response was that the door said CLOSED. Apparently the flip sign OPEN / CLOSED had in fact been flipped to closed at 2pm rather than 3pm.
There we were. Two customers in the store. Money in hand. Unsold product on the shelf - desserts that won't keep all that well overnight. And they won't take our money.
So I left with money still in my pocket.
Really ? This is how an establishment goes under. Maybe you wanted to close at 2pm. Ok, that happens.
Did the unsold product go back in the fridge to be sold tomorrow? If so, then beware if you drop in at 7am the next morning. You may get left overs.
If not, did they give it to the workers? Nice perk.
If they didn't do either, then did they really throw it out rather than sell to the two of us in the restaurant wanting their product?
I don't know.
What I do know is there are alternative establishments that treat their customers...
