Remember your early life adventures, experiences, etc? Seriously, though, do you? While we may remember a lot, what we are doing now probably isn't anything close to what we thought we would be doing when we were younger. Aaron is no exception. He found his way to Holbrook, Arizona from Chicago area by way of many endeavors. Military? Yes. Elbow grease and busted knuckles? Yes. Sweat & Tears? Of course. Aaron, however, found a passion during this time. Having worked in and around food establishments he learned a great deal. Techniques. Flavor profiles. Most immortality though a dream. Colonel Mustard Hot Dogs is that dream. Is it exactly as he had imagined? Doesn't matter. What matters is that when you order a dog here you'll quickly learn why Aaron didn't give up on his dream. He wanted to share with us and that he has! The meat that he so passionately prepares for his sandwiches speaks for itself. Whether it is the Cubano, Gyro, Italian beef, or other. Traveling through we made a stop to stretch our legs and fuel our bodies. While we were there we learned about this once Vintage Service Station, now hot dog eatery and how it came to be. Now a white building with yellow and red (mustard & ketchup) serving up fuel of a different kind. We watched folks come and go (with food in belly or hand), many of which were repeat patrons. Once closed for the days business, others continued to arrive hoping for a bite. Some that are regulars looking to get their favorite Ruben Sandwich and having to leave disappointed knowing they missed out today only to have to return another day. While the atmosphere is unique and you find yourself sitting at yellow tables on an open patio next to a vintage fuel pump (non-operational), you can't dismiss the overall cleanliness and service. The staff is very kind. They will answer your questions, complete your order, and make sure you are taken care of. I'm a sucker and rarely pass an opportunity for a Chicago dog, especially with an actual Vienna beef dog. Yes, bright green relish and sport peppers!! Light crispy fries, check! The Cubano meat is spot on and lays not forget the crisp pickle!
This is what makes stopping at Colonel Mustards Hot Dog all with it. Driving a $200k or $2k vehicle, neck tie or sweat band, doesn't matter. It's about good people with good food in a good little southwestern town serving up good memories.
Thank you for taking the time for the read. Yes, I do recommend this place whether you are just passing through or live a...
Read moreI come to Holbrook a couple times a year for work, and I'm always dreading it - There has always been pretty slim pickings when it comes to a quick and tasty and quality lunch.
I was recommended by some locals to check out Colonel Mustard's, and let me tell you, I'm not disappointed.
I grabbed lunch for me and the boys today - A chilidog meal, a reuben, and a Guido Italian Hero. With fries and Onion rings. I was assured that the Onion Rings were worth it, and I was not disappointed. Kind of a battered/breaded hybrid but super tasty and crispy. The fries are a bit unique in that the have a very thin layer of batter on them - They're delicious, but you need to eat them while they're piping hot to enjoy them fully.
I had the Reuben, and most places definitely under-portion the meat. Not here! It was a great and filling lunch. A great ratio of meat to sauerkraut and good cheese pull when I pulled it the halves apart. It took about 15 minutes from the time I got the food to the time we could eat so the bread was a bit soggy. Not a huge complaint though - Everything stayed together and was delicious.
My coworker described the chili on his chilidog as amazing. The chili had a lot of meat to it, with some seasoning that gave it a little kick.
The biggest things for me are the people running the place. I was only there for a few minutes to make my order, but I can tell right away that these people love their community and take a lot of pride in their work. Using an old Route 66-style gas station for their restaurant opens them up to a lot of possibilities where I see them becoming a local hang out. The young woman who took my order was very pleasant and enthusiastic - You can tell she enjoys working here, and that makes all the difference.
So, if you're a local or just passing through town, check this place out for a quick...
Read moreThis was our second time eating here but it won't be the last. We travel the Route 66 from Oklahoma to California and are always looking for places to eat. Found a real gem in this place. I had the Italian beef sandwich and the wife had Guido's Italian sub. Both were fantastic!!! I can't wait to stop in again.
Third visit. Once again, outstanding service. Can't say enough about the awesome service every time we stop. Today we ordered 2 of the Guido sandwich. JoJo had half of hers for lunch then saved the other half for that night at the hotel in tucumcari ( more on that in a minute) I ordered the Chicago Dog and it did not disappoint. Some years ago, I was in Chicago for a managers meeting and our DC took us out golfing on this really nice course. We were paired with Bobby Rahal's dad, the owner of Rahal Racing. When the cart girl came around, we ordered Chicago Dogs. Mr. Rahal said "Don't waste your time with those" He then told us about a place to get the authentic Chicago Dog. ( Along with kicking our butts fir 18 holes) We went to the spot he recommended and had, arguably the best dog I've ever had. TODAY I had the same darn hotdog!!! So good. That green relish, the sport peppers, the celery season, the snap of the dog. Incredible! Tonight, when we got to the hotel, I dug into the Guido and ate the whole darn thing. JoJo finished hers off from lunch. Thing is, they actually were better than when fresh??? Please stop here when you can. It will...
