I have to say that this is the best Vietnamese place that I have ever eaten at. The food, price, and service are all great. Everything was tasty, affordably priced, and had quick as well as very friendly service.
The menu is extensive with the usual classic Vietnamese dishes, but they also have a lot of special and unique dishes that are not the norm for a Vietnamese Pho shop. The two that stood out which I ordered was the Lotus Root Salad and Crabmeat curry. Both were outstanding and highly recommend to try.
The Lotus Root Salad is the pretty much the same as the classic Green Papaya Salad, but with grated lotus root verses green papaya. The lotus root makes for a healthy option as I am sure it is a good source of fiber and probably almost zero calories to it. It was very nice that the brought the sauce on the side so you can added it as you wished.
There Crabmeat curry was amazing. Lots of crab throughout the curry along with vegetables as well a the perfect amount of spice and heat. You can get it with French bread or rice, but I think the bread is best with this dish as you eat it more like a stew and have the bread on the side to dip and eat as you go long.
I did notice other tables around me ordering Pho. They look very large and filled with lots of goodies. By the size of them, if you are not that hungry, I would say start with a smaller size and especially if you are ordering appetizers.
One thing to note, although it is on the street and easy to spot on the road, the parking might be a challenge. I got lucky with street parking right in front, but that was because I went just after 11am. There is parking in the back, but limited. It also gets busy from people working in the near by medical building, so best to eat early or late to avoid the crowds.
I will be back and highly...
Read moreWe decide to go to Bac Nam based on reviews my husband read in Yelp. If I don't get pho in Vietnamese restaurants, my typical go-to dish is lemongrass tofu with rice or vermicelli. I've had this dish at several other Vietnamese restaurants around the island. At Bac Nam, when the plate was set in front of me, I knew eating it was about to be a unique and great experience. It was the first time that the tofu came with some sort of house- made topping--like some sort of red pepper ( but not spicey) and garlic dressing. I usually always always add spicey garlic pepper sauce from the condiment dish on the table. This time I didn't have to. The little cup of fish sauce that comes with the dish wasn't necessary either. The way this particular dish is made at Bac Nam makes the addition of any other sauce or dressing unnecessary (at other places the addition of a sauce was definitely nexessary). It was absolutely THE best lemon grass tofu with rice, lettuce, cucumbers, and tomatoes that I've ever had! My husband orderd combination pho. He asked that they hold the triple, and he just kindly mentioned that he does like tendon. Well, they really delivered on the addition of extra tendon. Unlike other places, this isn't something they charged for. Also, their steak is cut thicker than other places we've been, which made for really good eating. . When we left we were very satisfied! I highly recommend Bac Nam. The food is great, and the staff is very kind...
Read moreThis is an excellent, small, family owned and run Vietnamese restaurant. They have a very diverse, tasty menu items. My favorite is the curry crab and garlic fried rice. But, YOU won't be disappointed with any menu item.
My friends from Japan and I just happened upon Bac Nam. We had just visited the Makiki Christian Church around the corner. Our party needed a rest. We were tired of walking. And, we all desperately required a good, healthy, tasty and filling meal. So, we decided to try Bac Nam Restaurant. What an unbelieveable find. The dishes are absolutely delicious.
We had no introductions to this restaurant. But, the kind family style service and stunning dish flavors immediately won us over. And, since then, I have become a long-time, dedicated fan of theirs.
My favorite is the combination of curry crab and garlic fried rice. Some of the restaurant patrons, who passed by my table, nodded and remarked that the dish was one of their favorites too.
Later, I discovered that customers from all over Japan including as far north as Hokkaido, are their devoted patrons.
My Vietnamese friends, who later came to Hawaii from Boston for a visit, also gave their full, strong stamp of approval along with their seal of authenticity.
For all these reasons, I highly recommend the Bac Nam Restaurant for your's and your family's next stop. Give them a try. I believe, you will not be...
