It all started with a text from a friend asking if I ever ate at Fête (pronounced "fate"). I replied "No" and she replied back "The chef/owner (Robynne Maii) just won a James Beard award". I had a daytrip to Oahu coming up with dinner plans at Piggy Smalls but wasn't keen on their limited menu so I ended up canceling them to try Fête. Congrats to her as she's the first female in Hawaii to win AND the award hasn't been won by a Hawaii chef since 2003! ATMOSPHERE: Due to last minute reservations (a must, BTW), we had to sit at the bar which ended up being very entertaining as we had front row seats to watch cocktails being made. It's a small, cozy space with flexible seating for no more than one large group. A small room to the side where the open-view kitchen is offers a few tables but the fluorescent lighting coming from the kitchen clashed with the otherwise warm ambiance. MENU: Mix of American, Asian and Italian dishes with a farm-to-table concept. BEVERAGE: Spicy Kitty - $13.00 Perfectly balanced sweet & tart vodka-based mixture came in a ceramic cat mug with one of its ears covered in salty-spicy togarashi. I took it as a play on a margarita and licked the ear prior to taking a sips. FOOD: Fête Spreads - $10.00 Delicious and a great bang-for-your-buck app! Nicely toasted and chewy sourdough bread slices were ready for three different spreads - ricotta cheese drizzled with honey, mac nut tapenade (my fave) and caponata (a thick medley of seasoned and spreadable veggies). The bread was a bit burnt but I liked their crunch and charred flavor. Basil Caesar - $15.00 The subtle basil flavor was a surprisingly welcomed addition to the otherwise mainstream Caesar salad but for me the crispy shallots (think French-fried onions) set it over the top. Korean Bavette - $27.00 This cut of flank steak is supposed to be tender especially since we opted for medium rare but it was anything but. While flavorful, we couldn't eat about 60% of it as we spit out loads of tough, gristly meat. Such a waste! On the up side, the fried rice was tasty with a nice crunch to it, similar to being cooked in a clay pot. Kampachi - $42.00 (special) A tad pricey for the portion but I guess fish are prone to inflation too! The filet was warm, perfectly seasoned and seared with medium firmness. A creamy-savory orange sauce pooled the plate and complimented the fish nicely. Accompanying sides were moist sweet potato mash flanked with crisp plantain chips and sautéed veggies. DESSERT: Olive Oil Cake & Vanilla Ice Cream I don't have a sweet tooth but took a bite of the warm and moist yellow cake just to try it. It was good but a bit too sweet for me. The vanilla bean ice cream was mainstream. Their rocky road ice cream was sold out so it must be homemade and good! RESERVATIONS: I booked via Open Table a day ahead and got bar seating reservations for 5:30pm on a Saturday as no other times or seating options were available. SERVICE: Greeting was immediate and professional. Harry, the bartender, took great care of us as we sat at the bar for dinner. Server Josh also was terrific and recognized my spouse as they used to work together on Maui. OVERALL: A perfect end to my daytrip to Oahu. Everything was excellent sans for that bavette steak.

I went to Fete with 2 friends, and we got 3 cocktails, an appetizer to share, 3 entrees, and 3 desserts. We decided to get dessert only because everything else that we had ordered before was really delicious and exceeded all our expectations. The restaurant is located at the intersection of 2 streets, but it doesn't have a very visible logo. We were looking for the full restaurant name outside the restaurant but their logo is a big letter F, so even when we got there, we had to double-check to make sure we were at the right place. They have indoor, outdoor, and bar seating area. For drinks, we got spicy kitty, sushi Collins, and Kult following. All three drinks were really good. The spicy kitty was visually appealing and had a kick to it. Kult following was the strongest drink of the three, but it was also the sweetest. Sushi Collins was a citrusy and overall well-balanced drink. After the drinks, we ordered steak tartare as the appetizer for the table. The steak was finely minced. It was fresh and flavorful with a rich and creamy texture. For our entree, my 2 friends ordered their daily special - 3 oz. seared ahi tuna, and I ordered Korean Bavette. They both were delicious, but there was a day and night difference between the portion sizes. The portion size of the ahi tuna was really small and definitely not filling. Korean bavette, on the other hand, was filling with big portions. Korean bavette was hands down the best dish. It was very flavorful (on the sweeter end). Meat was juicy and tender. The side salad was also fresh. For the dessert, my friends got vanilla ice cream and rocky road ice cream, and I got the bombolini. Of the three, the rocky road was my favorite, followed by vanilla ice cream and then bombolini. Bombolini didn't have enough chocolate sauce, and the doughnut itself wasn't as flavorful. The two ice creams, on the other hand, were super rich in flavors, had a very smooth texture, and the perfect amount of sweetness. The indoor dining area had the tropical island vibe with rattan chairs and plants filling the space. Our server was very attentive and sweet. Overall, it was a great experience. I will be back.

𝗙𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝗛𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗶𝗶 (𝟲/𝟭𝟬 🌟) 🔹𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 & 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸: (𝟲 🌟) It's been a while since we've been to Fête. When we saw they won a James Beard Award we decided to give them another try. Sadly we thought the food was below average at best. 𝗞𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗕𝗮𝘃𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲 $𝟮𝟳 was decent. The beef was cooked properly and had a nice Kalbi style flavor. My wife liked the Korean Pear Slaw. The fried rice however was a fail. The rice kernals were very hard and almost inedible. 𝗧𝘄𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗟𝘂𝗱𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗼 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗻 $𝟮𝟴 was highly recommended by our server. Unfortunately it was a huge letdown. The flavorless batter was so thick it fell off in slabs when I tried to cut the chicken. The tomato jam tasted like reduced tomatoes and water. I honestly would've preferred ketchup over the jam. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗧𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗲 $𝟭𝟳 was a weird dish. The texture was a bit rubbery. Not sure why there was a bunch of salt thrown on it. It made for some salty bites. 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗖𝗶𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼 $𝟭𝟯 was ok. Not much seafood other than fish in there though. 𝗙𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝟳𝟱 $𝟭𝟮 & 𝗞𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗮 𝗢𝗹𝗱 𝗙𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗱 $𝟭𝟲 was a mixed bag. The Fête 75 was nice and refreshing. The Kunia Old Fashioned was unpleasant. It had a weird mouth feel to it. Hard to explain but it wasn't good. . 🔹𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 & 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: (𝟲 🌟) Service wasn't the best. We sat for several minutes before anyone approached. Our server was friendly though. It was a hot day and the air conditioning wasn't adequate. It's also a small restaurant so the tables are very close to each other. . 🔹𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘁: Not recommended. We were torn about posting this review. We were happy a local restaurant won such a prestigious award and were hoping to sing their praises. Unfortunately we left totally disappointed and our page is about posting our honest opinions. We wish them the best of luck but don't see ourselves being back anytime soon. . Really the best of the best. Having had over 50 meals at Fete since it opened, my wife and I can honestly say there is not one negative thing concerning Fete. Transport Fete to Greenpoint or Williamsburg Brooklyn and you would need to make reservations at least one month in advance. The only place in Hawaii to get pristine east coast oysters. The best creative fish on Oahu and the best wine list outside of NYC. Robynne and Chuck Bussler have created a Mecca towards creative but relaxing cuisine. 6/6/2020 Fete finally opened their doors after a forced hiatus due to the Corona virus. My wife and I have not eaten in a restaurant for over three months. We knew that if anyone could work out the incredible hard logistics of opening a restaurant that will be able to adhere to the most stringent state guidelines and still make everyone happy it had to be Chuck Bussler and his wife and head chef Robynne Maii..And boy did they pull it off. Less tables, staff wearing face masks, a slightly smaller menu and wine list BUT still impeccable service and of course some of the best food this side of Williamsburg/Greenpoint Brooklyn. We had Crab Toast: In the style of shrimp toast. More flavorful. Mahi Mahi Saltimbocca:with prosciutto, pesto and pan fried potatoes. Cavatelli with mushroom, light lemon, saffron & regiano. And a great Vouvray from the Loire Valley. It’s good to be back home. ———- 7/8/2020 2nd time back during Corona virus time. Paranoid because we are over 70. Fete has created the perfect environment for us and everyone else. Great spacing, superb facemasked service and as usual unbelievable food. ——————- Thurs. Sep. 24 First Day Back since all restaurants closed. Not one misstep. You feel safe. And you fall back in love with the most creative and delicious food in Oahu.

Reservations are a must. Service was impeccable and the atmosphere calm with good music choice. This restaurant is known in Honolulu as the location with a female chef who won the James Beard award in 2023. The food choices on the menu are well thought out. We tried the fete platter. The spreads were tasty, loved the pineapple flavored honey spiraled over the spread. A personal choice we would have preferred lightly toasted bread to accompany the spreads. We ordered the summer special with cesear salad, twice cooked chicken with greens, and cheese grits. The onion grilled cheese with a beef au jus (consomme). For dessert, the kulolo ice cream. There is a consistent trend. Whomever prepares the sauces and jams does an awesome job in creating a 5 star flavor profile. The tomato jam that accompanies the chicken is so full of flavor it compliments and carrys the moist chicken. It has a little kick. The cheese grits was not as smooth it needed a little more seasoning. Nothing a dash of tobasco could not fix. The au jus from what we were told is made from the juices from the beef cooked in the restaurant. It has a burst of flavor filled with herbs and has a hint of lime or citrus. That au jus is so rich in flavor. Just a personal preference, the greens were dried and a little tough to chew. We added the au jus to the greens and what a game changer to that side. The winner of the meal, the Kulolo ice cream. It has a flavor profile similar to butter pecan with no nuts. Overall, the food choices we selected were okay. The next time, we will try a dish made with a sauce, such as pasta and lightly toasted bread. Kudos to this chef for placing a restaurant in the center of downtown on hotel street, offering the community quality and upscale food.

After more than a year, I finally returned to Fête with the visiting mother of an good friend. She's a retired professional, sharp sophisticated and well traveled. My prior experiences put Fête on my short list for dinner, and it did not disappoint. Grilled carrots with sunchoke aioli and crisp sunchoke chips was a unique and delicious shared starter. We had an off-the-menu uku preparation that was unique and delicious: a substantial piece of very fresh uku, reportedly from Waianae (The "West Side") via a single special Fisherperson, was perfectly cooked and resting on a bed of tender diced vegetables over a tomato coulis with streaks of creamy savory accents. A topping layer of chimichurri and charred scallions finished off this tasty moist and tender entree. For dessert we shared an olive cake with caramelized yuzu. While a bit too sweet, the bountiful butter balanced it. The staff were appropriately masked, and the seating arrangement nicely spaced, with even a couple of tables on the Hotel Street sidewalk for the unvaccinated decorated by festive red sunbrellas. Their online reservation/reminder system worked flawlessly. Seated on generous and stable stools with backs at the Diamond Head end of the bar, our bartender/waiter was charming, groomed, well versed on the dishes, and attentive yet unobtrusive. His skill made our seating option fine despite my initial disappointment at not being able to face my guest. Other staff were friendly and efficient. Parking is what it is for the area. See you again soon, Fête!
