TLDR: My Wife with Celiac Disease was exposed to gluten here. The Manager made it very hard to get a refund even though we could not continue eating anything. Staff and food is amazing and we do want to return as it's very close to our hotel and delicious (but it was a little bit cold). Will gladly consider a change to 5 stars if I see the issue outlined below addressed.

Be careful if you are eating gluten free. The fries at this location are breaded and not indicated as containing gluten on the menu, we ordered them because all applicable meats and toppings were labelled accordingly if they were gluten free so we thought that we we could trust the menu to make it clear if something containes gluten. Due to the fries not being labelled as breaded my wife tried these immediately and noticed too late that they were breaded. After this occired the staff did everything they could to accommodate us but the manager was denying us a full refund when we werent and to continue eating due to my wife getting exposed and needed to leave to get medicine. The manager was also not on site and i was not able to contact them direcrly and only was able to speak with them through a game of telephone thru the assistant Manager who had to hero calling them, she was extremely helpful and made sure we were heard so props to the AM and their onsite team. The Manager, who was not on site, refused to refund us because we needed to have asked if the fries contained gluten. I guess that we should have not put any amount of trust in the menu at this restaurant when over half of the items are marked as gluten free and none of them were marked as containing gluten. Eventually we were able to reach an understand and receive a refund but this was after a 30 minute game of telephone with the Offsite Manager, thanks again to the AM who called the Manager for us...

The last time I reviewed this place it was 8yrs ago and they were not in Waikiki. Now they are. We were on a staycation and wasn't sure what to eat but then the Mr suggested OMG as we love the one on Waialae. I was excited to try the breakfast menu, but it ended at 10:30am and it was 10:45am. 1st strike. We decided to share, so I ordered a roasted veg burrito and bean and cheese nachos. Burrito: there were huge chunks of bell pepper in them that the Mr pulled out. Strike 2. No one wants huge chunks of anything emerging from their burrito. Since we split it, my half of the burrito had no bell pepper for some reason. However, the flavor was really good. Nachos: this was the strangest concoction ever. The cheese is super liquidy therefore the chips lost their crispness instantly. Strike 3. Also, there were also huge pieces of lettuce on top. Not even sure how to eat the nachos as one usually likes to have a little of everything on each chip which was impossible with the way they have it now. Needless to say the Mr was not happy at all. A suggestion would be to chop the veg in bite size pieces. Get thick cheese sauce or use grated cheese for nachos. The table that left next to us pretty much didn't eat 50% of their meal and left. Others coming after us also wanted breakfast but was denied as well. One of the very young workers didn't seem too happy to be there and literally slid us our food. I am generously giving 3 stars based on the flavor of salsa. We're sure they have steady customers through tourists in Waikiki, but for the locals who remember them when they were in town and not in touristy Waiks, they should do better. We'll continue to patronize the Waialae...

Oahu Mexican Grill – Shockingly Unprofessional and Disappointing

We had high hopes for Oahu Mexican Grill in Waikiki, but our visit was a cascade of disappointments, punctuated by one of the most dismissive customer service experiences we’ve had in Hawaii.

It started when we asked to see the ingredients in the bread because my wife has a milk allergy—a basic, responsible request. The attendant laughed. Yes, laughed. That moment alone told us everything we needed to know about the culture of this place: careless, immature, and completely untrained in how to handle dietary restrictions, let alone show basic human decency.

Things didn’t improve. The bacon was undercooked and rubbery, while the eggs were overcooked and dry. When I asked—politely—for sour cream, the waiter actually sneered at me. Not a word, not a smile, just a look that said I was a problem for daring to ask. If this place were aiming for hostile indifference, they nailed it.

The coffee? Cold. Not iced. Just cold and stale. It felt like an afterthought, much like the service.

To be fair, the Barbacoa had good flavor, and the salsa verde was genuinely tasty—but decent seasoning doesn’t make up for being treated like an inconvenience.

If you’re looking for great food and a welcoming atmosphere, skip Oahu Mexican Grill. Waikiki has far better spots where you won’t be laughed at for having an allergy, or sneered at for asking a...
