My Favorite Vietnamese Chicken Spot in Houston Has Moved 🐔

Cơm Gà Houston is another bucket list place for Vietnamese cuisine in Houston, TX. The name says it all. Rice and chicken in Htown! This is a great place for lunch. The restaurant itself is humble appearing from the outside and simple but tidy and clean inside. You will notice right away that the service is quick and to the point. If you are indecisive with your choice of food, your server may move on and come back to you later. They are quick though, so you won’t wait long either way. From my experience, knowing a little or a lot of tiếng việt (Vietnamese language) comes in handy when ordering but just pointing at the number you want will work just as well. Fortunately, I know enough to get by even if I sometimes have to repeat myself a few times. I gotta get better with the tones. Great practice though! The food is very good and a great change of pace from some of the more common Vietnamese dishes to be found elsewhere. If you are coming here for the first time you have to get the cơm gà (chicken and rice). The chicken is room temp by design so don’t expect a hot dish but it’s great just like that. If I’m not mistaken cơm gà is the Vietnamese variation of Hainanese chicken and rice or very similar. It tastes great and is very filling as well. Another dish I had was the Bún Măng Vịt Gỏi Bắp Chuối (Duck with Banana Flower Salad). The Bún Măng Vịt was excellent! The duck meat was seasoned well, the bamboo shoots were tender and juicy and the broth was very good. The vermicelli noodles were filling and the fresh herbs made it taste really great. The banana flower salad was really tasty and a great highlight to an already delicious meal. The small bowl of broth that was brought with my food was also very tasty. I wanted more. To cap off the lunch, I had to order bánh xèo which is very large here. It had plenty of bean sprouts and shrimp. It was very crispy and I loved wrapping it in the greens and dipping it in nước chấm. I prefer the greener leaf (collared green?) over the lettuce to wrap the bánh xèo. Like I said before, in my opinion, Cơm Gà Houston should be on the bucket list of any Vietnamese food lover, whether an H town resident or not. Come try it for yourself!

My mother-in-law heard about this place and we decided to check it out. Chicken and rice should never be turned down. 😉 I am so glad we stopped in for dinner. The food was absolutely delicious! Chicken meat was juicy and tender, rice was cooked perfectly, and the fish sauce for dipping was so addicting! We also got the special chicken eggs which I’ve never had before. Those were such a treat and not one was wasted at our table. All our dishes were emptied! Our kiddos also tried the chicken rice porridge which was also flavorful and just straight up Asian comfort food. I’m so glad we stopped by in here while visiting Houston! We are from Washington DC/metro area so we have lots of dining options as well and if this was in our area, it would definitely be on my list of favorites to frequent!

Com Ga Houston is hands down my favorite spot in the city for chicken dishes and banh xeo. It’s one of those places that just feels like home with its delicious, comforting flavors. Their banh xeo is a must-try—it’s absolutely massive, extra crispy, and perfect for sharing (or not!). At $18 a plate, it might seem a bit pricey to some—my mom, for example—but I think it’s worth it. The portion is generous, though it does have more of the "banh" than the toppings, which is fine by me because that crispy pancake is so satisfying on its own.

Their chicken dishes, though, are where they really shine. I always find myself torn between the Com Ga Goi, Com Ga, and Com Chao, but honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of them. The chicken is free-range, which gives it that wonderful chewy texture that feels authentic and hearty. Plus, their nuoc cham (dipping sauce) is absolutely amazing—it ties everything together with just the right balance of tangy, savory, and sweet.

One thing I have to mention is how amazing the waitresses are. They do it all—they take orders, prepare the food, serve the dishes, and even bus the tables. Their hard work and efficiency really stand out and make the dining experience even better.

As for the atmosphere, it’s what you’d call a classic "hole in the wall." Don’t expect anything fancy or super spotless, but it’s clean enough and has a charming, no-frills vibe that adds to its authenticity.

If you’re looking for authentic flavors, generous portions, and a cozy, down-to-earth spot to satisfy your cravings, Com Ga Houston is a fantastic choice. It’s always a treat to visit, and I can’t...

30 minutes to get seated for a party of 4

No check in system or host, just wait your turn and pray you make eye contact with someone at the restaurant for a table. If you don't act fast enough, people that arrived after you might seize your table.

35 minutes to wave someone down to take our orders

30 minutes for actual food to come out, even if it does come out. The sides come out 15 minutes after our food.

15 minutes later our drinks arrived

Food was mediocre. Not good enough for me to waste this much of me and my family's time to come back

Staff have no sense of urgency. They walk and work like there isn't a line of people out the door and the people that are currently seated isn't PAYING to eat their apparently "famous" chicken and rice.

I tried waving down two employees to let them know we were still missing items from our order and all they did was made eye contact then ignored us and walked the other way.

Our very first experience with Com Ga Houston and it was atrocious and HORRIBLE. I wouldn't even come back even if it's for Take out or someone paid me money to do it.

Do not waste your time here and go to Com Ga Hai Nam or somewhere else nearby instead.

These people should hire more staff, train their current staff to treat their current customers better or else it will end up getting shut down like the previous Pho Con...
