The food was good and I have been here 3 times. However, I have not been able to contact a manager. For whatever reason there was never a manager on duty. A young lady took a dish rag out of a bucket of water bare handed; wiped the panel where the food was (as she should); returned the towel to water and began making the customers plate also with bare hands. I did not want to be rude or discouraging to other customers/guests. So, I asked the other young lady who handled the register, if they are required to wash their hands. She said yes. I told what the other young lady did and she replied, "oh, well we don't touch the food". There were no gloves. Nor soap and water used. Indeed they do not touch the food but they touch inside the containers. They did not with mine. Then I noticed the tongs to pickup the patties was placed on top of the warmer. Anything can be up there. They would not take my name and number for a call back. As I work and am still at work and do not think I should call all day looking for a manager as a heads up rather than calling the health department on that location. This is the first time experiencing this. The young ladies working there were not rude. In fact, very helpful but unfortunately not knowledgeable. I just wanted to pull the mgr to the side and let him/her know none of that was a good look. I am not saying do not go because the food is great! Yesterday we had oxtails, cabbage, plantains, white rice with gravy, med & spicy beef patties with macnchz and it was everything. Liked it so much I went back for a small order today. Then this happened but I will not spend my money with them if this type of instance occurs again.
Oh and they are high. Considering. All that food was $22. $15 for oxtails. I guess that makes sense. Also, if you come at the end of the night they will not make sure the food is fresh. It is on a cafeteria/assembly line. What you see is...
Read moreI grew up in Miami and I love Caribbean food this place does serve oxtail is lacking flavor and a little tough it does offer jerk pork it was quite tasty the portion size were tiny portions on the meat tons of rice and cabbage they charge $17.50 per plate and $5 per drink in a small cup that they refer to as large. My wife and I stop there to eat some food and it was $44 for two drinks and two plates serve to us and styrofoam to-go boxes it was ridiculously overpriced and lacked flavor or pizzazz I personally could cook better and I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to cooking Caribbean food this place is a disaster but really located in a wonderful place where it gets tons of walking in traffic from the Coliseum across the street which means it's constantly getting new blood customers who don't know better and are unexpected of the high price they're about to pay for so little meat but if they like eating rice this place is rice heaven. I give it a two stars because the jerk pork was very flavorful but the amount of meat you got for $17.50 filled the small compartment and a three-compartment go container that normally is where your bread goes or one of your vegetables go That's how little the portions were way over price $$$$$ don't get me wrong I have paid $17.50 for a large to go out stale before but I had to hold it with two hands there was so much oxtail this was simply rice rice rice rice...
Read moreThis is my second time visiting however, a girl helped me the first time and everything was good. Food was fresh and service was good. I came in around 4pm, no complaints there. But this second visit let me tell you, horrible! I came in around 7/730 pm and again ordered the lrg oxtail plate. When I tell u the guy behind the corner tried to scrap the pan for the last little bits of bones and fatty meats I was appalled to say the least. I asked him was that all that was left and he said yes.. so you mean to tell me it’s appropriate to serve that to me? Unacceptable! I asked him about the stewed chicken and he replied that it was good so I said let me have that instead. He said he would do half and half and I was fine with that. The plaintains were old and hard and I asked to get some fresh ones. When I got home the food was horrible. The chicken was hard and dry, cabbage was dry and the oxtails were so tiny all I had were bones with gravy over my rice. I don’t know if it was because it was later in the evening but that’s no excuse. A lot of us get off work in the evenings and after working a 12 hour shift the last thing you want to do is go home and not enjoy the food you just paid your hard earned money for. I will not be back. There are to many options to choose from in Houston. Hopefully Golden Krust on Kirby will get it together. I heard the Westhemier location was...
