This pains me. I have never deleted a review to highlight my frustrations especially considering that my initial review expressed so many personal positives.
I wrote my original review June 30th; the review was commented on by the owner July 5th. As a side note, I had lunch there the same day. In fact it was the owner commenting on my review that made me want to eat there.
Tangent aside, I ate there today, July 6th. I bring this up because there was a policy change regarding my initial review.
In my initial review, I marked how important it is to me as a customer to have options, and I love when a restaurant is flexible with customers.
I really enjoy fresh jalapenos on my tacos. They add flavor and natural spice to versus additional additives such as salsa.
On June 30th, I wrote a 5 star review highlighting this very aspect of customer flexibility. Additionally, I complemented their staff.
Today July 6th, I was told by manager Lorenzo, that I can no longer ask for fresh peppers. As a customer, this is extremely frustrating. You all have fresh onion, fresh cilantro, avocado, lemons, etc. The only thing that is missing is fresh peppers. You all have them, but they are not readily available. I understand that not every customer will ask for fresh peppers, but there are a very small minority that enjoy natural fresh peppers.
The cost of a single pepper is particularly nothing. A POUND of peppers is $1.35lb at Walmart. A single pepper is pennies compared to the whole lot.
I have no problem with additional charges when asking for fresh peppers, but eliminating the option is frustrating.
I write reviews when I love a restaurant. Rarely do I write negative reviews. I have several restaurants in the neighborhood that I frequent. I have off menu requests at all of them.
At El Rey Taqueria (N. Main) I ask for fresh jalapenos for all my tacos. I also have an affordable way of getting rice and black beans in a single bowl. I also have off menu items to get à la carte grill chicken when ordering for my son. They know me by my name at El Rey.
At Salata (N. Shepard) I order a full bowl of soup, but I am able to add pasta, jalapenos, onions, avocadoes, and tomatoes to my soup. This mixture of items is off the menu. They also know me by name at Salata.
I work across the street from La Calle, and would like for this restaurant to be an establishment that I frequent. At this moment, I cannot.
I know asking for fresh peppers is a minor reason to negatively review a restaurant, but to me, it highlights that they are not willing to be flexible with customers.
Additionally, in my initial review, I highlighted this very point. I wrote, "I asked for fresh jalapenos, Roberto hooked me up. Any place that gives the customer that kind of freedom is my kind of place! 10/10 in my book"
My review was read by the management team and commented and thanking me for expressing my thoughts. It is clear that this restaurant does not strengthen their positives, and their manager Lorenzo is interested in disappointing customers. Shane!
I also want to note: Lorenzo did not personally inform me. He instructed another staff member. I find it cowardice that he did not have the stomach. In my opinion, that shows a lack of leadership. A leader should take such burdens and responsibility.
This truly pains me. I give this restaurant a 4/10. It crazy that it took them less than a week for me to write a follow up review expressing my frustrations.
I hope management reads this. I plan to eat at this restaurant one more time, ask for fresh peppers once more, and if denied, I'll express my frustrations directly to the manager and never eat here again.
If things change, I'll update my review to the original score. This place is really cool. I can tell they are still figuring things out, considering it's a new location, but I hope my review highlights that management is not flexible to its customer and demonstrate that their interests are not in the...
Read moreThe food is great. Some of the best tacos and quesa birria you'll find around this side of town. The avacado salsa is by far one of my favorite sauces and I would buy jars of it if I could. However, every Tuesday I have a hard time getting the staff to honor the taco Tuesday discount. The first time the issue was that apparently they only honor the discount if you dine in, and I was ordering to-go. I wrote that off as a simple misunderstanding and intended on coming back another Tuesday to dine in. Their website flyer doesn't mention any distinction between ordering to-go or dine in but okay. Well, I was just there Tuesday 4/11/23 and got 5 street tacos for dine in and I brought a friend with me because I wanted to show them how good this place was. Sure enough, they tried charging me full price when I was following the exact rules the last guy laid out for me. When I brought up the Tuesday special the guy behind the counter said "the taco Tuesday special doesn't include the consomé and the 2 extra corn tortillas". I have been here 10+ times and every time I order the 5 street tacos it comes with all of that without asking for it. So what's the deal? Is there a special way to order the Tuesday special? Just seems like they really don't want to give me the discount for whatever reason. Well, I pointed out that we can take the consomé and 2 extra little tortillas off my plate and he sighed and gave me the discount. If that's the rules, then so be it, but at least communicate those rules clearly to your guests so I can order my food accordingly. If this happens again I just won't come back, which is a shame because the food is great and it's right down the...
Read moreMe and my friends enjoy well enjoyed going here after work. This is not the first time the two old Viejas get rude with us. We put the past experiences behind us but today made it clear that we are not welcomed. I did get the name of Barbara because she was extremely aggressive towards customers and an employee there. Why does she think she is the one in charge of the menu? Since when is the shade to exclude from the taco special? When we tried getting drinks she told us no and told us we needed to get chips, we asked for a taco- something we have gotten in the past so we can get drinks since it depends on employee if we can get alcohol with food or not. Cool whatever. She then told us to try something else because we can’t get just one taco. Again it’s not about what she said it’s the delivery of the message. We are still paying customers that get asked for a tip after we swipe our card. She then argued with me and told me I couldn’t get a box since I ordered a plate to go for someone. What part of any of this makes sense? She needs to stay in the background flipping tortillas because her customers service skills are absolute garbage. We won’t be back because as good as the food is the service she gives makes you want to go away and get McDonalds. The two gentlemen and the Dominican lady are the only ones who know how to treat customers well and make us feel welcomed. Get rid of...
