We (my daughter and I ) had a craving for some good sushi. I searched around and saw this place from their website. I decided to take the drive from where we live. We arrived about 4:55 p.m. It is not a fancy building. It looks worn but decent. The outside matches the inside. The building is not very big. Worn but decent. The decor on the inside is low lighting, dark wooden chairs and tables, nothing fancy. I took time to view the food but not the building before deciding to visit here. Being greeted by what I believe to be the owner was nice. We were seated by the bar and I noticed a sour smell. It smelled like sour fish would smell. We were going to get up to leave but decided to look at the website again to make sure we were at the right location. As I viewed the site a little more, I saw a comment from a previous customer that recommended to dine in the upstairs area, If the fish smell was to much. I asked the waitress if there was an upstairs area and she said "Yes, it opens at 5:00 pm." We requested to be seated upstairs since it was just after 5pm. She asked the owner if it was okay to seat us upstairs. The owner replied "Yes." He escorted us upstairs. When we arrived upstairs, we were impressed because the upstairs decor looked like a 5 star restaurant. There is a big difference from the bottom floor. It was exactly what we wanted for our dining experience. The tables were decorated with white table cloth, art was on the wall the featured interesting art of previous customers. The lighting in the upstairs was bright, perfect and welcoming. We ordered the Cajun Sushi and the Grilled Salmon. The sushi tasted fresh, delicious and it was as if it melted on my tongue. Now the salmon on the other hand was good but not great. It was to overcooked for my taste but good nonetheless. This place is known for its sushi being great and Great it is. I will return to try something different on the menu but for now this is best sushi I've...
Read moreMy first impression was that this was a casual comfortable place to grab a nice dinner and drinks. It was a little cramped downstairs but there is an upstairs that is more open. The decorating did not really match from one level to the next, but the caricatures on the walls upstairs were cute, just didn't fit the vibe at all. The staff was th star of our dinner. Attentive to our needs. In fact, we were visited by the manager and chef (guessing the owners?) Our server was great. She was personable and made a few good drink suggestions (the Tiramisu martini I heard was amazing.)
The Menu.. it was way too much stuff to read through. Sushi and seafood and apps. We tried the mango salsa topped crab cakes, seared ahi tuna salad, Eel lover roll and the stuffed mushrooms. The roll was amazing, everything fresh and it had 10 pieces. The fish, tuna, crab and unagi was plentiful and well worth the $15. The crab cakes were good, but a little bland. They needed seasoning and some acid. The Ahi Tuna salad almost was really good. The ginger dressing was the star. I think if maybe the tuna was sliced traditionally in thin slices and layered over the salad with maybe a ponzu sauce, it would have been killer. It came with a couple fried tortilla chips and a bread roll. Honestly, save the money, ditch the roll and add a little sea salt to the chips! Last, the stuffing in the mushroom was okay but the outside was weird and the sauce tastes like cream of mushroom soup from a Campbell's can. Maybe they were frozen?
My suggestion, remove 30% of the menu and really take these things from good to amazing. The flower was beautiful but not edible. Use edible flowers. And, sorry, but look at those mushrooms compared to the other food, just, no need for these. I'm giving a solid 4 stars, amazing staff, and clean. If you are looking for a chill place where you can have some sushi rolls fresh and some bomb drinks, this...
Read moreI have 30 plus years in the restaurant business. I usually do not write reviews. However, my brothers and my experience with this establishment makes it necessary to do so.
In a scramble to get our mother taken care of for mothers day we settled on having a meal delivered to her and her husband. Their favorite seafood restaurant had recently closed and will not reopen. To make things more complicated, I live in Chicago and my brother in So Cal. My mom mentioned Red Fish Seafood Grill as being recommended by her trainer. So, we sent her a menu for them to go over and tell us what they wanted and we would have it delivered. My brother contacted the restaurant to arrange the meal. Unfortunately, some of what my mom and her husband wanted was not available on their Door Dash menu for delivery. Enter restaurant manager Shay (sp?). Shay arranged with ownership for their delivery menu to be updated in order to facilitate our mother's selections. And, thus their meal, as hoped for, accommodated and delivered.
As I mentioned earlier, i am extremely familiar with the inner workings and challenges of operating restaurants. Doing this not only goes above and beyond, it's unheard of. I cannot emphasize enough the level to which Shay and her ownership went to make our mothers special day very special.
One saying oft pontificated by restaurant operators is to have, "a genuine concern for the guest". Few, are willing to actually follow through though. This establishment is and did. They have earned our mother's loyalty. Even if she hadn't, "absolutely loved the food", she would frequent this establishment. She has found her new favorite restaurant. My brother and i are excited to visit as soon as we are in town. I suggest those of you in the area...
