A longtime friend took me to lunch today, to a place he grew up with - Stanton’s City Bites. As we parked, he reminisced about his childhood, pointing to the now-closed school across the street where he once spent his days. Inside, he recalled stopping by the back counter to buy lunch meat, chatting with the owner, who always knew him by name. Established in 1961, Stanton's began as a small family-run grocery store. Over the decades, it evolved into a beloved burger joint, known for its unique, made-to-order burgers that keep Houston locals coming back. We ordered the bacon cheeseburger, and while I’ve written a few restaurant reviews before, I’m not sure I can do this one justice. When it arrived, it was a sight to behold—a thick, juicy patty nestled between a golden, toasted bun. The bacon was crisp, the cheese melted perfectly over the edges, and the lettuce and tomatoes tasted as if they had been picked fresh that morning. The first bite? A perfect balance of smoky, savory, and slightly sweet flavors that instantly made it clear: this was no ordinary burger. Drink choices were plentiful, from classic sodas to fountain drinks. What truly set Stanton’s apart wasn’t just the food, it was the experience. Stepping inside Stanton’s is like stepping into a Houston time capsule. From an old AstroWorld pennant hanging on the wall to a life-size Rudy Tomjanovich poster, the place breathes nostalgia. Every corner tells a story, every detail a nod to the past. As we left, noticed a worn patch on the ground near the entrance. The spot where the public telephones used to be. Remember those? Beepers? That’s what this visit did - it brought back memories of a simpler, happier time. We came for a burger. We left with something more. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I was sad to hear that Stanton Hom Fong, for whom the restaurant is named, passed away a month ago. I grew up knowing Uncle Stanton's son, Arthur. The restaurant's building was originally the family's grocery store. Arthur and his wife, Theresa, started serving food. The popularity of their juicy burgers (and other food) became very popular and the grocery items slowly disappeared. Arthur, sadly, passed away six years ago. Theresa has bravely continued on and successfully serves the community. I joined a group last week to meet for lunch there. Had a classic, the original bacon cheeseburger - yum! It was a little messy, but it was juicy. The crispy french fries added to the flavors, but I should have ordered sweet potato fries. We parked a block away. It gave me the opportunity to enjoy up close an increasingly rare view - older homes with a worn air of having seen much of Houston's history pass by. There doesn't seem to be any preservation group trying to keep these wonderful pieces of our history alive. The immediate area around the building is changing. Grand old homes and little cottages have a charm and architecture that may have added touches but are still true to a nostalgic era of Houston that has long passed.

Nut allergy friendly: Yep! No nuts in anything! Parking: Park down the street, walk a few minutes. Order-to-Burgers: 12 Minutes A lovely diner-esque spot that reigns as one of the kings of burgers in Houston. It looks like an unassuming spot from the outside, and walking in feels like you've been transported back into an old school diner. Counter service and food delivered to the table. For three people, we got three different burgers and one order each of waffle fries and tater tots. It was plenty enough for all of us! I had the Holy Cow burger without pickle. Perfectly cooked, amazingly filling, fresh ingredients and perfectly melted cheese. A classic burger done right. The tater tots and waffle fries came out hot and crispy and were just the right amount of seasoned and salty. The water's cold, the fried are crispy, and the burgers are bangers. Definitely worth a visit.

When will google wise up and offer a zero star rating? And what happened to customer service? Upon delivery of my meal, I realize that it was not at all delivered with the ingredients that the name would indicate. Philly grilled cheese surprise. My bad. When I ordered and asked what made it a Philly surprise the order taker could not tell me, and said “I don’t know maybe because the jalapeños are a surprise?” OK then. When my entrée came out, I realize that I should have inquired further, this was a meatless option, which I overlooked, again my bad. However, what happened to restaurant customer service? LITERALLY any restaurant you go to if a meal comes out and you truly do not like it management will offer to take the meal away and bring you something different. You generally…. Well, let’s face it. I’m 49 years old and in my 49 years it’s not Generally it is 𝑁𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟 that I have been coerced for a meal I did not like and sent back. What I do pay for, however, is the replacement meal. Some places don’t charge you at all. Not what I was asking or expecting. I was simply asking for something different as I do not like the meal presented. I was further informed that why, yes, they could absolutely take this away, and they could absolutely bring me another meal, but I would 𝑎𝑏𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑒𝑙𝑦 have to pay for both meals. Buyer be extremely aware… If you order something from this establishment, and it arrives at your table, and for whatever reason it is not tasteful or you do not like it, you are pretty much stuck with what you have or you have to pay for an additional meal. By the way, did I forget to mention this is an establishment that I frequent time to time. Not after today though. And I will certainly discourage this establishment from anyone whom may request, “Hey do you know any good places to eat around here?” My response will be “Absolutely as long as it is not Stanton’s City Bites. Give BB Lemon a visit, They are a short, five minute drive up the road.… Stand up service, Outstanding food and management cares about their patrons- and don’t worry if your meal is not what you expected what you ordered or is distasteful in any means Brian will absolutely take...

As of April 2022, Stanton City Bites is still TO-GO only.

I forgot how much I really liked this place. I stopped by after a climbing session down the street and worked up an appetite. I met up a friend and noticed that the place is still togo only. I'm not sure if masks are still required, but I still wore one. The sign on the door says no mask, no entry, but I definitely saw a few people drop by with no masks picking up togo orders.

I had the spicy chipotle burger and shared an order of chili cheese fries. And man oh man, the burger was juicy, tasty, and delicious. The ingredients tasted fresh and I inhaled my burger. Their buns are fluffy and just the right amount of bite in a burger bun. 10/10

My friend ordered the Luke Skywalker burger with the crispy fried bacon and he also inhaled his burger. 10/10

As for the chili cheese fries, I definitely loved it. I feel like its almost better than Henderson and Kane (yikes!). I kept texting my significant other how good their burger and fries were and that we needed to make a stop together one day.

When we got our food, my friend and I decided to pop the hatch and eat on the back of my SUV. It was a nice day out, and we didn't want to drive home to eat our burger. Burgers like these need to be eaten right then and there. So that's what we did.

I'll definitely remember to have Stanton on a rotation list of burgers to eat on a whim. I can't believe I forgot about them!

They are also Asian owned! Gotta support the Asian Community. They really do know how to make a damn...
