I'm one of the few Original remaining born and raised Houstonians. Let's be completely honest here... Houston, TX is a highly populated world class Metropolitan city. However, our Amtrak train station is 3rd World at best, with outdated everything. An Intermodal Station would suffice since this is in fact a Gateway City. Seems like the North, East Coast & West Coast and various Southern Citizens are now opting to make the move to Houston and call it "Home"... The population is steadily increasing and roadway traffic is now surpassing cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago and San Francisco. There has to be a solution and I would think an Intermodal Station with, reliable Buses, additional Light Rail and Amtrak Rail systems would help reduce traffic, generate more job opportunities as well as increase transit safety here in this region of the country. I'm speaking from experience, I've traveled the world over and mass transit innovation could definitely enhance livability and revenue to allow many families and individuals to grow and rise. It would be a...
Read moreThe Houston Amtrak station is like no other in the United States. The walls inside the station are covered with railroad memorabilia and even though the outside of the station doesn't have the old look like the California stations, employees here in Houston are very helpful. In this day and time, the general public doesn't understand much about passenger train travel, as it's a mode of transportation, whose heyday was in the 1960's and back, but by the same token the Sunset Limited in a LUXURY HOTEL on wheels, offering sleeping car, lounge care and DINING CAR just like you see in the movies. You will not be disappointed traveling on the Amtrak trains, especially The SUNSET LIMITED which runs from New Orleans to Los Angeles, through Houston, Texas but keep in mind, this is a mode of transportation that was the only mode of transportation from 1880 through 1965. So don't expect to get there quickly. Buy your ticket, then step aboard, and relax to a past, but more enjoyable...
Read moreIt's kind of funny. Houston, one of America's largest cities, and a city with some rail history of its own, has one of the most pathetic train stations in the world. Small German villages have much nicer and far busier train stations than this city of over 2 million people.
This station is almost inaccessible by transit, but they probably wouldn't bother building transit around a single train that only comes once every three days. There isn't much to see or do here. If you are taking the Sunset Limited, its a land cruise vacation and not because you have somewhere to be. It's about as barebones as a 'major' station can be, and its only kept running with duct tape by a passionate staff.
The one silver lining is that the downtown skyline is quite nice to walk out from when you get off here.
Fortunately you are very close to the downtown police station since you are going to need to report how criminally bad the city's...
