On the evening of June 17, myself and a group of 6 arrived to celebrate my wife’s birthday. For a majority of our group, it was our first time gracing this facility. Understandably, my hopes were extremely high for I wanted the best experience possible for the birthday girl.
Our group arrived 30 minutes early for a 7:00pm reservation, so the receptionist recommend that we wait inside their bar area until our golf bay was completed. She also express that I would receive a text when the bay was completed and to follow the instructions. (More on this later) After a few, moments we received an ominous greeting from bartender “Dez”. We all ignored the uninspired greeting, and figured that the peak hours of her shift may have gotten the best of her at this point in time. It was a typical Houston Tx Summer day with temps hovering around 96 degrees at this point. This may have also have contributed to Dez’s customer service or lack thereof. Even though our cocktails were cold, it seem that the temperature inside was still rather uncomfortable. This was appeared apparent after we observed Dez lathering on deodorant and not sanitizing her hands to serve food and mix drink orders. After we noticed this unsanitary act, we decided that our time at the bar would have to come to a close. After becking for 3 times, finally she walked over with a somber stare and said “I heard you the first time”. We found this to rather rude and uncalled for. She could have at least acknowledged us the first time instead of having us look like complete imbeciles by intentionally ignoring us. She then ended her service by throwing our tickets towards us and walked away without saying a word. In my opinion, this was extremely classless.
By the time we closed our ticket, it was 7:30pm and there was no text alerting me of our reservation. At this point, I proceeded to the reception to gain a better understanding as to why. The receptionist claimed that I did not respond to the text that they sent out. Baffled I showed her my text and email history. Oddly, no attempts was made. I then ask her to send a test text to make sure that their records were accurate. As one may have guessed, the text went through instantly. This proved that my reservation was lost in the system. I was then told that I would have to wait another 30 minutes for the next bay. This would have my initial 7:00pm reservation at 8:00pm reservation. This was highly unacceptable, for we had another time sensitive engagement and at this point time was of the essence. After I voice my displeasure to the manager in charge, this cut additional time down to a 15 min wait. This is 45 minutes later than my initial reservation.
After the gaggle service we experience, we finally made it to our bay. Note that climate controlled bays were not very controlled. Present were osculating fans that distributed more heat so please be mindful if you are sensitive to high temperatures.
The golf experience was “meh” when you factor in the previous barrage of mishaps. The games were easy to follow and if you have a fun group you can make the experience the way you intended. This is indeed “Top Golf, just not...
Read moreGolf is a big deal to many people. I have never taken up the game, even though I live next to a golf course, and the main reason is because I have been told it can become very addictive. But there is an alternative to traditional golf that many will tell you is almost as much fun, perhaps even more so. That place is Top Golf.
This Top Golf location is in west Houston, close to Katy. It’s a large facility and from a distance, it looks like a baseball stadium of sorts. It is located right next to I-10 so it is impossible to miss. There are three levels with golf bays on all three and even though there is a large amount of space, this location can get extremely popular and waits for a bay are common.
Of the Top Golf locations in the Houston area, I have been to this one the most frequently. I usually come here for a game of golf but there are other games, too, like billiards, shuffleboard, etc. In addition to the games, Top Golf is also a full- service restaurant and bar with multiple bars on the inside and outside. Some people who visit here come solely for the bars, restaurants, music, and other extras. They even have a large meeting space, popular for private parties.
Food at Top Golf is American style and when I visit, I tend to go for the appetizers if I’m playing golf. I prefer these because, since the food is bite- size, I can grab my nachos, wings, or other food and be ready when it’s my turn to swing my golf club. The food is decent and they do have some fun options, like the injectable donut holes. They are like ordinary donut holes, except they come with injectors filled with different flavors. You can then take them and fill the donut holes with your favorite flavors.
I have generally had good experiences at this Top Golf, but there are a few annoyances and first among them is the service itself. The personnel can get very nitpicky with customers, insisting that you leave your golf bay once the time has elapsed or pressuring you to purchase more time. I can understand this when it’s busy, but when there are a large number of bays open, they really need to relax a little. The other issue I have is the cost. Once you pay to play the game, add food, drink, and tip, you can easily drop 150 dollars or more on a visit for a family of four.
I’m not that into the game of golf, but I don’t mind trying my luck at the sport every now and then and Top Golf is exactly the place I prefer for my golfing fix. If you can get past the cost and the constant pressure to pay more and extend your time or move inside, you will find that the Top Golf Katy location is a nice enough place to spend an...
Read moreGoing downhill, and quite a disappointing experience. We have been coming to Top Golf as a family for years, it's out staple family outing. We have even hosted events here in the past. We usually eat and golf at the same time. Sometimes we have gone there even just to eat (when they first opened). Today, we went to TG as a family, and decided to sit and eat first, then golf, because we didn't want to rush to eat, if the time was running out on the bay. We arrived at TP at 12:45 on a Tuesday afternoon - not prime time! The service is the restaurant area was awful - so slow, not friendly at all, and not attentive. We are not a high-maintenance crew, and did not need much, but she never came to "check on us" during the meal. We sat with empty glasses, and had to get her attention for a refill. When we were all obviously done eating, we sat for quite a while, before we finally got her attention again, to ask for the check. I get she fills bay drink orders as well, but we were one of two tables sitting in the dining area.
Food used to be good - we ordered a mix of two different wings, a flatbread, and a burger and fries. Not sure if they changed suppliers or if it was a result of the kitchen staff. All food was very dry, over cooked, and no longer hot when it got to us. They definitely did change their French fries though - they used to be so good, now, they were in line with the rest of our order today - dry, overcooked, and cold.
Then went to go golf, and reserve a bay. We were told it was a 15-30 wait. As we are looking at many empty bays. Again, it was now 1:45 on a Tuesday afternoon, not prime time! We put our name on the waitlist and waited 40 minutes before I went to the desk to check on the timing of the bay. I was told, "oh yeah, you're in bay XYZ". Really? Because I never received that text telling me our bay was ready. Because of the time it took in the restaurant, the unexpected wait for a bay (in an open facility), and the system not telling us the bay was ready, we ended up having to leave. By the time we would have gotten started and set up in the bay, that was going to put us late for another time-commitment we had.
A few lessons learned...
