We order from or eat at Mallory’s at least once a week; we love the high-end food, the great quality and selections, the atmosphere, and, most importantly, the wonderful people who work at this establishment. We always strive to support locally-owned businesses and do so on an ongoing basis but being patrons of Mallory’s makes that easy because the experience dining there competes head on with that of the best restaurants in St. Paul or Minneapolis. Not everyone agrees with Mallory’s bold yet very honest statement about not being the mask police. That’s okay, having differing opinions is what this country was founded on and is what makes us the home of the free and the brave. Mallory’s statement was upfront and transparent and clearly reflects the limitations and difficulties in enforcing this rule especially considering the caveats in the emergency order. All businesses, whether they were thriving or slowly dying due to initial restrictions and mandates related to COVID-19, were challenged beyond what could have been imagined to manage the impacts of the pandemic. Those that struggled to keep their businesses afloat faced difficult challenges for many reasons including figuring out how to survive on months of being restricted to takeout orders only and, once allowed to reopen, figuring out how to implement additional health and cleanliness measures to ensure the safety and comfort of their customers. Not an easy process to be sure. Now specifically to the masks. Even the government/state officials admit this will be loosely enforced. The St. Croix County Sheriff just announced they will not even try to enforce it. Why? Impossible to do. So we self-police in this regard which means you chose. Life is all about risk management. If you thought that through you would agree – with everything in life there is an element of risk and you weigh those risks as you make choices. The mask choice is yours; truly not the responsibility of the business owners to make that choice for you. Mallory’s will let you in without a mask. So what? Once in, you can remove this per the emergency order. Aren’t the germs still circulating at that point. Seems a bit arbitrary. But if this is bothersome to you in any way – patrons without masks will not be turned away – order out. We can tell from personal experience, the food is as great ordered out. In every day life, we take calculated risks. It’s your decision on whether to enter an establishment that doesn’t turn you away if you don’t walk in with a mask just as it’s your decision whether or not to wear a seatbelt, wash produce purchased from the grocery store, or get an annual physical. We have far too much criticism of others that do not share our viewpoins in this country and not enough respect or tolerance for differing opinions. Let’s be the change. We have to start somewhere, let’s make it here. Don’t undermine a business that is just trying to survive while trying to be totally open about the inability to police the mask order. They are telling you this so you can make an informed decision relative to your circumstances and tolerance level. This is freedom of choice with the information to do so. Seems like something we should be applauding, not condemning. J&K aka...
Read moreWe had high hopes of checking out a new restaurant for our friends birthday. Those high hopes only sank lower and lower. We picked Mallory's for the rooftop. Upon walking in the door, what seemed to be the manager informed us that due to incoming weather (chance of light rain) the rooftop was closed. We thought the rooftop was covered, but nonetheless, said that's fine, we can sit at the bar for a drink and check out menu. Immediately got the sense of the opposite of friendly/welcoming service. She insisted twice that we sit at a booth, however we wanted to sit at the bar. Also, there was nobody in the place, but one booth with two people. The bartender was friendly enough at first, not very attentive, especially since we were the only ones there. We order the scallops for an appetizer. While waiting, we informed her it was our friends’ birthday and she asked our friend if she wanted a birthday shot. Our friend said sure! and then after the bartender made the drink, she informed us that it would be $5, but normally it's $10. Usually a birthday shot, is free, especially when offered, not asked for. And if not free, you'd expect them to tell you $$ before making it. Then the scallops came out (3) total in the appetizer platter, one was ice cold in the middle. The bartender was a bit taken back/rude when my friend informed her, that it was very cold in the middle. The bartender then asked if it was frozen, my friend said no but very cold. The bartender then said well, it's 'sushi grade', sometimes it's cold in middle. Very odd. My friend was like okay alright it's fine, and left it at that. That is when the bartender went to this supposed manager and began to talk and cackle about my friends’ complaint of cold food. Not quiet at all, we could hear them clearly as there was literally nobody in the restaurant but one booth and us. The manager and bartender then came over and manager was telling my friend about the 'sushi grade' seared scallops, etc. My friend again said it's okay, I already told her (bartender) it's fine, to leave it at that. Then the bill comes out, at this point we are definitely not going to have dinner here, just had one drink each and split one appetizer. (3) Scallops on menu were $12, on our bill they were $24. Of course, we said something, the bartender said oh yeah I forgot to tell you it's market price now. Umm, definitely wouldn't have ordered (3) small scallops for $24. What seemed like 10 min later she finally got the okay from the manager to put the menu price on our bill, remind you some of the food was ice cold and my friend didn't even finish eating hers.
Overall, the staff was plain out rude and clueless. The place was completely dead, the menu pricing is whack and I would never recommend this place. The only positive from the situation was the bartender recommended San Pedros for dinner and at San Pedros we had the best service and delicious food.
EDIT: How thoughtful, the owner changed “entitled b**ches” to “entitled brats”, I guess I will go back and enjoy overpriced, mediocre, cold food with AWFUL service now. Yippee. *See screenshot of initial...
Read moreA little piggy named ham laid on the bottom of a sandwich, his brother bacon jumped on top of him while another little piggy named pulled pork finished this sandwich off before adding some extra ingredients. And, this big bad foodie was about to enjoy some little piggy's without huffin' and puffin' and blowing a house in.
This pork filled sandwich named the, Smokey Three Pigs and Cheese is found at a new place in downtown Hudson called Mallory's and will be added to our favorites list. My wife and I had an extra day off for the 4th of July holiday and we decided to have a Monday-Funday and just enjoy the day. We wanted a rooftop and great food, and my wife's friend made the recommendation to check Mallory's out.
Their space is a very cool and nicely remodeled typical downtown Hudson brownstone, but with a very nice rooftop to enjoy a view of the St. Croix. While there are a couple other rooftop/patios in downtown Hudson, nothing compares to Mallory's. As we started to look over the menu, we were greeted by one of their very friendly servers to grab our adult beverage order. I went for a Spotted Cow (because that's what you do when you're in Wisconsin) and my sweetie went for their fresh made Cucumber Mojito.
As we sat and enjoyed the day, we ordered up some lunch - the previously mentioned Smokey Three Pigs and Cheese and their Loaded Philly Cheesesteak. You already got a little taste of what the Smokey Three Pigs includes, but let me make it a little clearer and let you know how darn good this thing was. Pork carnitas, smoked ham, Wisconsin cherrywood smoked bacon, hickory smoked cheddar, tomato and onion with BBQ sauce on a brioche bun. You will hard press to find another pork carnitas mad as well as Mallory's was and when you add all the other pork family to this giant sandwich and fixins', you have yourself a masterpiece!
As for the Philly, it's their traditional Philly Cheesesteak, but then they add carmelized onions, wild mushrooms and mixed bell peppers. They cooked their Premium USDA Angus to a tender, juicy and seasoned just right, perfection. Add all the extra deliciousness and you have yourselves a Philly worthy of making the Food Gnawledge - On The Streets of Philasota, Philly top 10 list. One of the sides that you can upgrade to is a House Made Tot they've created. Shredded potato, cheese and sour cream hand-rolled. Served with their house buttermilk ranch. Man were these things delicious!
This may have been our first visit to Mallory's, but it's certainly not going to be our last and we will definitely be adding it to our favorites list. You will not be disappointed and you should definitely make a special trip to downtown Hudson to check out...
