My husband is so awesome and open minded I told him I wanted to try kava for our Saturday evening out and he gladly obliged. We headed to HB for a new experience. When we arrived Hannah greeted us, she was very friendly and helpful. She explained different things to us about kava, had great conversation with us, and even introduced us to the shop kitty, Driftwood. The ambiance was chill, music was good, and they have a decent selection of activities as well as comfortable seating.
Now on to the kava, I'm guessing there's a reason you can't find many places that serve it. One reason being it literally tastes like muddy water. They do not hide this from you here either. So we had the option to leave before trying the "muddy water". So I did some research after the fact, Kava comes from the root of the yaqona (piper methysticum) bush, a relative of the pepper plant. I also read that it can lead to liver damage. Now I'm no expert, but I did read this in several places and nowhere did it mention kratom it was specifically regarding the kava itself. All I recommend is doing your research and listening to your intuition. I'm guessing trying it one time is fine, but that's one of the reasons I don't drink alcohol anymore... I really am trying to treat my body like the temple that it is.
The experience and ceremony itself are interesting. The way you do it here is: whoever serves, serves the entire time and has to essentially drink the butt of the bowl. You have to mix the bowl well each time so the sediment does not settle too much. You serve the coconut shells about 3oz full put the shell down. You then cup your hands and clap twice and then say "Bula Bula", chug a shot, then clap again. My coconut shell was cracked and I ended up getting kava all over my pants. Hannah was cool and brought me a fresh, uncracked shell to continue my experience.
In my honest opinion the ceremony and community that kava creates is more effective and better than the kava itself. We had ordered the 10 shot bowl and at best I felt slightly relaxed and ended up with a stomach ache after the fact. There are no snacks here, however they do offer pineapple slices to eat after your shots. That actually just made the kava taste worse, if you do this I recommend eating the pineapple after you drink all the kava.
The menu is small and unclear. I thought the 10 shot bowl was $34 because the way it is listed on the menu. Being that there was no flavored kava when we went as well as the menu not specifying one price was for plain kava and the other was for flavored (It's all crammed on to a tiny chalk board.) The 10 shot bowl actually ended up being $51!
So besides the ambiance, friendly staff, Driftwood, and open mic night I can't really find a reason to go back. I can't see myself spending another $50+ on drinking muddy water, that didn't actually seem to have any effect on us, and could possibly...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreAs I travel to United States, I check out kava bars, because many of them are so cool and provide such a great environment for people to connect, heal or just vibe... I've seen all kinds. Mystic Waters is in a really cool little village.
It looks like a European story book when you walk in. It's beautiful well done with creative dragons and trees. I expected to find Kratom with the Kava which is normal, but they only served Kava. They didn't sell it by single shots. It looked like they sold you a package which gets expensive.
I like the traditional idea that they give you a bowl a whisk with the powder to make yourself it's very traditional. However, drinking it with the powder is not over all the best way of nmy opinion.
they served Fujian Kava and I took a friend who had never experienced it. I usually feel it on two shells, we felt nothing after spending $70 to get 10 shells worth...high price for zero results ...so I would say in regard to the service and the quality of the product It's not very good in my estimation
The experience and the ambience is worth at least a trip to check out. We did meet some great people there two ladies that had a great vibe, I would love to see them have brewed leaf kratom-and the choice of having kava that's already pre-brewed and filtered versus drinking the powder which can cause stomach problems.
Overall, I'd say they were 3 star based on the products and the service.
Another note-
Their machine was also down so we had to use Venmo, which is not the best. Their Internet was shoddy and did not work well my videos did not...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreA party of 6 of us came here, all but one for the first time. We came a bit early before 7, which meant thereās a bogo deal. Pricing was not cheap. There was a bit of confusion regarding shots and costs. The happy hour is calculated as two double shots for $7 which really came out to one shot for $3.5. We order the 30 shots, thinking the.original cost wouldāve been at 30 shots at $133, so we thought we were paying half of that at $2.22 a shot. For the 30 shots plus a kombucha and ginger tea the bill came to $125. We all got about 4-5 cups each. I would describe the flavor as earthy and a little bitter comparable to matcha but muddier. So you really have to stir it up so that the powder doesnāt settle to the bottom of the cup. It was recommended we take 4-6 shots. We all had about 5. Most of the others didnāt feel much but tingling on the tongue and lips. We liked the atmosphere but wish that the happy hour was explained a bit more with clarity. If you look at 30 shots for $133 it comes out to $4.43 a shot so with happy hour you are only saving a little. Overall, we thought the atmosphere in there was cool and cozy. It was rather quiet without a band. I am not sure if we will return, the effects are very minimal. For $20 a person, I rather go spend it on thc gummies. With tax and tip we each...
