What a fun addition to downtown HSV. Apparently this is like a bodega you'd find in the big city like NY city. I've never been and have never been a city girl so I have no clue how it would compare. It's looks super cool and it does have big city vibes inside.
The grocery store section seems like a upscale convenience store. I would not travel here to go grocery shopping. It would be convenient if you lived in the apartments and needed a quick stop for some items. Or if you were hanging out downtown and wanted to pick up a drink and some snacks. There are some specialty items that look fun.
They do have a butcher, it is very small, and they hardly had anything on display, but they just opened last week so I bet this will slowly grow into something super special. I asked if they could bring in some Tri Tip and they said they could do it! I'm calling in next week to see if it comes in. I'm too excited about this.
I'm not sure if this is a bakery necessarily, but they had a delicious looking loaf of sourdough that I had to get. My son will be the judge of how good this is. It feels nice and dense.
We came for lunch and weren't disappointed. I ordered the fish sandwich. It was absolutely delightful. It was a perfectly grilled grouper with a slaw on a delicious bun. I can't tell you how disappointing it is to get a sandwich and the bread is not good. This is not the case here. The bread was moist, fluffy and slightly sweet. I got it with a side of fried pickles. The fried pickles were pretty good, but bit salty. It was mixed with fried peppers....
Read moreI was so excited to try The Standard last night. I had been wanting to go for a while and last night we were to meet friends for dinner. When we walked in, there were only two individuals at the bar. I wasn’t sure if we were to seat ourselves. As I was walking towards a 4-top table, a young man approached and I told him I wasn’t sure if we were to seat ourselves. He responded it was fine to sit wherever. My husband walked on past the table to head to the restroom. The young man returned with menus and I casually asked what was good on the menu. His response was “it’s all good or it wouldn’t be on the menu”. I was shocked at his answer. However, I guess I should have asked specifically what was his favorite or guest favorites. When my husband sat down, he asked about the IPA listed on the board. It simply had IPA. He said “ignore the board”. I then asked the name of the IPA and who made it. My husband asked the young man if he drank beer (to see if he had had the IPA), but before my husband could finish his question the young man responded “no! It is poison to your body”. My husband said that is your opinion. My husband asked for a sample of the IPA as he didn’t know the name and I ordered a drink. My husband did not get a sample. The young man brought him a glass of the IPA when he brought my drink. Our food was awesome! The atmosphere was great, but our server….all I can say is bless his heart. I hope to return to try the brunch one day, but if by chance he is our server, I will ask for a...
Read moreI've walked by here so many times, but finally took the plunge to meet for brunch--so glad we did! The atmosphere is so cozy, and everything is well decorated. It's a market, bar, coffee lounge, restaurant, and grab-n-go all in one! Such a cool environment! Our server was so friendly and quite patient as we took our time to chat and go over their menu. It's not a huge selection, but that was quite welcome, in my opinion. I get overwhelmed when restaurants have 100 choices! I started off with a hazelnut latte, which was the perfect drinking temperature upon serving...quite surprising! Not overly sweet and a good balance of hazelnut and coffee. We ordered fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese and shrimp & grits. Our frost round of tomatoes was cold on the inside due to being sliced too thick. Our waitress was so kind about it and brought fresh, perfectly cooked ones out again. I'm crazy picky about pimento cheese, but theirs is fabulous! The tomatoes were fried so well and not greasy. Total win! The shrimp and grits were some of the best I've had (and that's a lot!). Tender, perfectly cooked shrimp, creamy grits, small chunks of conecuh sausage, and just enough peppers to give it flavor and color. The cream sauce was delicious... I devoured it far quicker than anticipated. The food is not inexpensive, but honestly well worth it. It's no more costly than any other place around Huntsville. I'm excited to go back and try more! Great environment, great service, and great food--definitely...
