When I tell you I have been WAITING for this place to open...

I've had my eye on Big Spoon's first two locations in the Birmingham area for a couple years but never had a chance to visit either. I was elated when I saw the announcement they were coming to Huntsville.

They've finally opened downtown, right next to Melt in the old Cookie Dough Magic location, across the street from Moe's BBQ, The Standard, Stella's, and La Esquina. I was able to stop in Wednesday evening to try a scoop.

The inside is bright and pretty and modern though some of the walls feel a tiny bit bare still. I imagine it'll fill out more as time goes on -- they only just recently opened. There are about 12 different flavors to choose from, and dairy free/allergen free flavors are available. You can also order sundaes or sammies, which are jazzier ice cream sandwiches. There's also a freezer with ready made pints for purchase to take home.

They had about three young staff members ready to serve the moderately large crowd. The line moved quickly and when I met the servers, they were polite and working efficiently. When I placed my order, one of the girls asked me if I wanted a kids' scoop, single, double, etc. I wound up with a single but it's nice to know they'll serve grown ups a kid's scoop since it's a smaller portion and not as expensive. :)

I ordered the coffee and cookies because coffee tends to be my favorite ice cream flavor. And I'm gonna be honest...it was just okay. A lot of anticipation only to be a little let down, truthfully. My biggest complaint is about the cookie aspect of the scoop. I greatly prefer larger chunks of cookie in any flavor of ice cream that includes them, and these cookie bits were ground to near dust and honestly just gave it a gritty texture. I noticed after the fact that they used gluten free cookies (as opposed to the non-gluten free cookies used in their cookies and cream) and I wonder if that's perhaps why it didn't hold up as well. As for the ice cream itself, it was decent: super strong coffee flavor to begin with, but it sorted of blended into a little too much sweetness as I kept eating. It wasn't bad ice cream by any means, but it wasn't a new favorite for me, either.

However, I've heard wayyyy too much positive press to not wanna give this place another shot. I saw one reviewer talk about ordering a flight (3 smaller scoops) and I think that'll be my pick on my next visit, so I can try a bunch of different flavors and really get a feel for what I like. Sad the coffee flavor wasn't really for me, but very much looking forward to trying others in the...

Me and my friend went to big spoon to get ice cream last night on 09-30-23 my friend owns a service dog because he has PTSD. Upon entering we were immediately told by a woman with blonde hair wearing all black that the dog couldn't be in there. My friend told her it was a service dog. She said she didn't care that the dog could not be in there. So we did not make a scene and we exited and stood outside for a moment. One of the other workers who was actually dressed in the store uniform who had brown hair and glasses came out and apologized to us and offered us a menu and to take our order for us and one of us could come inside and pay. My friend did so and I stayed outside with the dog. Upon entering he explained to the other woman and showed her the dogs registration. She was still rude and said no dogs allowed. And just dismissed my friend. The other woman with brown hair was very kind tho and took care of my friend and apologized for her managers behavior. All this to add that the other woman is in the wrong. People have service dogs for a reason and if I had not been there to sit outside with the dog while he went in and paid my friend would have not gotten service. It is against the law to tell someone they can't bring their service dog into an establishment. You need to educate your managers on that. I'm only giving two stars for the fact that one of your workers...

I don’t usually go for sweets, but WOW. I’ve been thinking about their dark chocolate ice cream since I got it a couple weeks ago. I usually don’t like chocolate ice cream since it rarely actually tastes like chocolate, but man did this one hit the spot. Always great service from the team, letting us sample the options. They even had a jar of lactose pills on the counter which was perfect because I ran out of mine and wouldn’t have been able to get something otherwise. I like how they sometimes have dairy free options, however I wish there was more consistency. This time they only had sorbet and an almond milk option, neither of which I like. It’d be helpful to be able to go in knowing there will be some standard popular flavors each time that are allergen friendly. That’d actually be nice with all their offerings. I love the unique, experimental flavors, but sometimes I’m craving a standard flavor and it’s a bit strange they might not have one. The interior feels rather cold and hard, not very cozy, so it’s not a place I really like to sit and chat with friends. I’d rather get something to go. But it’s a great location, so convenient right by the Melt, which my friends and I like to visit since they also have allergen free options. Great to be able to make a stop for...

Happened on this shop while visiting downtown Huntsville! I highly recommend!! The ice cream is amazing!! Lots of wonderful original flavors - so hard to choose! The manager was great too! A young family was in line ahead of me and their small child dropped their cup of ice cream upside-down on the floor while walking to the table. The parents threw it away, which of course caused the child to burst into tears. The father said he would share his. The manager noticed what had happened and brought the child another cup of ice cream (at no charge!) saying "we can't have tears - everyone needs to be happy in an ice cream shop!". Another nice touch was a canister of Lactaid at the register so those who are dairy intolerant can enjoy too!

Cozy chic for blissful Holiday desserts and decadent hot chocolate is Big Spoon Creamery in Huntsville, AL! I have already been back since my first introduction to this dessert paradise by my niece on October 15, 2023. My favorite is the Lemon Sorbet or Meyers Lemon with that fantastic pumpkin spice waffle cone. Made with rich cocoa beans, this hot chocolate treats the inner senses to the kindest hug ever. A decor of snazzy, modern-industrial style, bold exposed ductwork, with sleek, minimalist tiling mixed with warm bamboo wood welcomes sophisticated patrons to an intimate conversationalist spot or a downtime oasis for one.

This is a hidden gem in downtown HSV, and it should be everyone’s go to place whenever they have a sweet tooth!! Icecream here doesn’t get any fresher or unique than this, and from start to finish, the service was exceptional. My husband got the Peanut Butter Honey, and I got the Ricotta Fig, which sounds different, but was absolutely delicious. I also got a scoop of the chocolate, which was rich, creamy, and so decadent! I already can’t wait to go back and try out a new specialty flavor. We will be back! It’s amazing having a place that does homemade icecream and not the generic stuff off the shelves to resell.
