I arrived at the end of their day on a Friday. The person at the door (I believe was the owner) did inform me that the kitchen is about to close, but he would check if they could still serve me. I informed him that I would like a steak. While I waited a moment for him I noticed the fully stocked bar to my right and a modest dining area to my left (only 1 other person seated at this hour), with a view of the street.
Thankfully, they were able to serve me (otherwise I wouldn’t be writing this). Their list of specials had a dry aged NY strip, which I asked to have cooked medium. I added Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Broccoli, and their Baked Macaroni and Cheese. I started with a Cesar Salad (asked for extra dressing). When I mention food items I will give a 1-5 rating (bad to good, 3 is perfectly acceptable / average).
They did bring a loaf of bread (3) and some garlic butter (4). The crust was hard and the inside was soft. It wasn’t like it was old, but it wasn’t fresh out of the oven (which I didn’t expect). I love it when the butter is soft, like this was; makes it so much easier to use.
The Caesar Salad (4) was made with a generous portion, for a small / side dish, of romaine lettuce cut to a good size and included croutons. I can’t recall if it was missing parmesan cheese, either way I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The Steak (5) arrived blackened, which worried me that they over cooked it. As anyone would, I quickly cut into it to pleasantly find it cooked to perfection. It was a good sized cut of meat with plenty of juices now and to come. I recently ate at a more expensive steak house, and I enjoyed this dish more than the expensive one.
The Broccoli (3) was a single large piece. It was lightly cooked / steamed, so it was fairly crisp. The Garlic Mashed Potatoes (3) was made in-house, but was lacking the garlic I was expecting. This was easily resolved by adding the garlic butter from the bread (raised it to a 4).
The only disappointing item was the Baked Macaroni and Cheese (1). While it was baked, which only served to dry it out, it was in fact shells (not macaroni) and some sort of manufactured cheese sauce. All lightly topped with bread crumbs.
When the waiter came at the end of my meal, I explained that while I was happy with most of my meal I considered the baked macaroni (which in fact was shells) and cheese to be inedible and I had no intentions of taking home what remained. When he returned with my check, I was pleasantly informed that they did remove the cost of this item.
Overall I was very happy with my meal and experience here. The staff was cordial and friendly. The meal (that I paid for) was well made and enjoyable. I will definitely be returning for more and I recommend that you...
Read moreMy fiance and I weren't sure where to go on NYE, our original choices were either Harry Caray's or Ditka's, we wanted a steak dinner on NYE. When we looked at their menu's, the steaks were $65-75 dollars, al a carte. So we decided to stay local and when we checked your menu online as another option, it listed a Chop Chop Rib Eye - USDA Prime 26 oz bone-in rib eye broiled to perfection, including : Served with your choice of soup or salad and baked or mashed potato and broccoli $44. We thought, wow, great value, so we made our reservation, via "Open Table" for NYE, 99% based on the price listed on your menu. I then received 2 emails from Open Table, one confirming the reservation on 12/27, and the second a reminder on 12/30, BOTH emails contained the SAME MENU, reiterating these prices. I was NEVER told there would be a SPECIAL NYE MENU, with jacked up prices. So you can imagine my surprise, dismay and disgust, when after we were seated I was handed a menu listing the Chop Chop Rib Eye as 24oz, NOT 26oz, and al a carte, for $51 ?!?!?! Classic "Bait and Switch" tactics I wouldn't expect from a used car lot salesman. So I was forced to order the Chop Chop, and then had to pay an additional $6 for semi-under cooked hard Au gratin potato's, and $6 for Spinach w/mushrooms, which was actually a ton of mushrooms with a thimble-sized serving of spinach. My fiance' ordered the 8oz filet mignon for $38, not $33 like the menu you sent me stated, and it was of course, also al a carte, medium. It came to the table beyond well done, and resembled a hockey puck. My steak I have to say WAS cooked to perfection, and I did enjoy it. The Asian calamari app was good. Regarding our waitress, she was adequate, and seemed to possibly be a fill in for the higher expected NYE crowd. Semi-pleasant at best. She listened to my angst patiently, but what could she do ? The seating was crowded and dust was visible on the divider between our table and the booth next to us. Overall experience was maybe a 5 out of 10, I would have rated it 2 1/2 stars but that wasn't an option, so I give it 3 because my steak was very good. Definitely NOT worth the $165 I dropped on the evening (Meal $125, overly generous tip $20, 2 drinks at...
Read moreWell... this place kind of sucked. I figure if you’re in downtown Elmhurst you have to be good, right? I mean there are lots of places to eat there, and this place has been around for quite a long while, so how can it not be good? They figured out a way. When we arrived they weren’t quite ready for us and offered for us to sit at the bar. Great... we love to drink as well as eat. We both got a drink and by the time we were done they were ready to seat us. We felt a bit rushed to leave the bar while we were trying to pay, and for some reason the waiter felt Jessica didn’t need another drink because she finished one already. More wine dude! And keep it flowing! The bread took a long while to get to the table, but was served with mighty fine garlic butter. Yummy. Our appetizer was also pretty good. Some kind of eggplant salad thing that had a great mix of textures. The main course... Jessica’s rigatoni was nothing special, and they skimped on the ricotta. When it come to Jessica’s food never skimp on the ricotta. In fact she will have an extra bowl of ricotta on the side garnished with a sliced avocado.... and more wine. Mine was downright bad. I forget what it was called but it was a steak smothered in fries and some kind of sauce. The description made it very appealing. In reality it was piece of cheap skirt steak, the kind of used for carnitas, with fries on top of it. The steak was cooked well enough but it’s not the right piece of meat to be the centerpiece of a meal. Next. For dessert we got the carrot cake. This was very recently frozen and just plain bad. We picked at it for a bit, each bite dryer than the next. Eventually it started to taste like a gas station muffin. Like the kind you get free with a cup of coffee in the morning. If it’s free I don’t expect anything, but this wasn’t free. Overall our experience was a cornucopia of mediocrity. Good appetizer, good bread, service was ok, her dinner was a 3 out of 5, mine was bad and so was dessert. There’s so many other places to try we probably...
