Usually Caplinger's is fantastic, and the only place you can get quality fish. It's a nice place for a date and on average you'll spend $30.00 for two combos with desserts, but it's worth it. However, last night's meal was just gross. We had fried talapia and perch sandwiches, hush puppies, a side of chipotle slaw, and key lime pie. We made the order to-go. When we got home we realized the containers weren't marked and had no idea which was which until we bit into them. The fish, as usual, was quality but it was overcooked. The batter coating had almost no flavor and the sandwich itself was drowned in mayo.
I'm not sure, but I thought their sandwiches came with tartar sauce or at least tartar on the side. Also, this thing desperately needed some citrus, but we didn't get any lemon. It's been a while since my last visit so I dont remember if lemon is standard with their meals, if not, they should definitely consider adding it.
The lettuce was old and wilted. The slaw was runny and tasted terrible. The pie had a pale tan color like when you make it at home. I thought this might indicate it was made in house. But when I tried it, the flavor was really off. It was like an overpowering, sharp, artificial key lime flavoring. I only ate that bite and some of the Graham cracker crust. The rest I threw away.
The hush puppies were also overcooked, and the same ones they sell in their frozen food section. They tasted great, but they're kind of small and you only get six. I thought this was annoying because it's just a fried ball of seasoned cornbread and they could at least give you a portion similar to a side of fries.
The service was good and the staff were very friendly. But, the food was definitely only two stars and sadly the best thing I had was the refried frozen hush puppies.
I'll come back because this is really not like them. I've been here a few times before and the food was always amazing. So, I'm hoping they were just having...
Read moreI've always loved the food but on my last 2 trips to the Shadeland location I was displeased with the customer service unfortunately. I ordered 2 sandwiches a half a pound of shrimp an fries. I placed my order over the phone and requested for the total amount due. The representative explained to me he was unable to provide me with the total amount due over the phone. I said okay slightly confused about that I walked inside because I was in the parking lot so I could have my total amount due. Surprisingly he stated he still wasn't able to provide me with my total amount due still. Baffled, I sat back in my car an waited on my order. I returned to pay as I listened to a different cashier provide the customer in front of me her total. I asked out of curiosity how could I know how much over the phone an he told me he couldn't tell me what the amount would be due. I asked well why what happened? He stated the owners policy. My guesstimate of 30.00 for my order was extremely accurate but I didn't write a review the 1st time when I experienced a less than usual experience with customer service because I understand when people have a "bad day" but I just didn't understand the aggression somewhat in regards to my inquiry about the amount. I order food from here a great deal an speak highly about this restaurant to everyone because I enjoy the food but the customer service today an previously from a younger cashier that works mainly the register when you 1st walk in have been less then pleasant. He (he as in the current cashier)stated at olive garden they don't provide how much the food is over the phone just still confused on how take out isn't able to provide just the total like it was able to before in the past. I'm just dissatisfied an disappointed with customer service. ticket number 10107541 they...
Read moreI dropped into Caplinger's and Broccoli Bill's on Gray road last Saturday evening. I was surprised at the number of shoppers and diners almost as much as the steady stream of take-out orders going out the door. The market was spacious and clean - impressive for this late on a busy day. The displays were well stocked and there were multiple choices of seafood and meats. Moreover, I was pleased that the variety of offerings in seafood and meats weren't the usual tired choices offered up at the usual grocery stores.
I was greeted and taken care of very quickly. Being a huge proponent of customer service in determining my loyalty and where I place my heard-earned money, customer service is a very important criteria for me. Just like Caplinger's in Indianapolis, I was given the same excellent treatment and expert advice here as well. Eddie introduced himself and offered up a sample of the Smoked Salmon Salad that I was pondering; I was sold in a heartbeat as this stuff is amazing.
With Eddie's advice and suggestions, I also picked up a beautiful, smoked swordfish, and an order of seaweed salad. I rounded out my order with other items from the seafood and meat counters and am contemplating some great meals in the coming days.
This will become a regular stop for me and I look forward to catching up with Eddie and seeing what his latest creations will be. It is going to be a good year (and a healthy one) for dining at my house with this market within an easy drive of the house. Thanks for all the fresh offering and for this great oasis from the...
